Chapter 24 — Appointment Under the Stars

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

The big day has finally arrived. Ngoc Han woke up early, although last night she almost couldn't sleep because she was nervous and excited. She lay quietly for a while on the bed, looking at the morning sunlight filtering through the window, her hand gently touching the shooting star bracelet still hanging on her wrist, a light smile on her lips as she remembered the memorable evening yesterday.

The whole family ate breakfast together earlier than usual, the atmosphere in the house was filled with excitement. "Remember to bring a light jacket, tonight it will probably be colder than usual on the rooftop," Ms. Lan advised, her voice full of concern as she watched her daughter prepare things.

"Yes, I remember, Mom," Ngoc Han replied, smiling, although there was still a little indescribable nervousness in her heart when thinking about having to stand in front of hundreds of people tonight to share her private story.

Arriving at school early, she found the atmosphere much more bustling than usual. The whole club was fully focused, each person doing their own thing, busy completing the final preparations. Nhat Quang, as the homeroom leader, is running around between groups, checking every smallest detail to make sure everything goes smoothly.

"Good morning," he said when he saw Ngoc Han appear, his eyes lit up with affection when he realized she was still wearing the bracelet he gave her last night. "Did you sleep well?"

"Not much," Ngoc Han replied honestly, smiling slightly. "But I think it's hard for any of us to sleep well today."

At noon, the local TV station's camera crew arrived early to film the preparations and interview some key members. Ngoc Han, although quite nervous at first, gradually felt more confident when answering reporters' questions about the journey of building the club and the meaning of this event.

"What impressed you the most during the preparation process for this event?" the young female reporter asked, pointing the microphone at her.

Ngoc Han thought for a moment before answering, her voice sincere. "I think, that's how a small group of people with the same passion can overcome many difficulties together, from the risk of club dissolution, to seemingly unsolvable safety issues. But most importantly, this event taught me that the night sky is not only a place to observe the stars, but also a place to connect people with each other, helping us find meaning and healing in our own unique ways."

At the end of the interview, the whole group continued to be busy with preparations, setting up small exhibition booths to introduce the history of astronomical observations, arranging seating areas for guests, and final checking the entire sound and light system.

In the afternoon, Yen Nhi and a few other friends from class also came to help, bringing enthusiasm and warm words of encouragement to Ngoc Han before the important moment.

"Are you ready?" Yen Nhi asked, holding her friend's hand tightly, her eyes full of trust.

"I think it's close," Ngoc Han replied, taking a deep breath to calm down. "No matter how nervous I am, I know I've prepared as much as I can."

As the sun began to lean toward the west, dyeing the sky a brilliant orange color, the first guests began to appear at the school gate, eagerly waiting to enter the terrace area, which was splendidly decorated with sparkling string lights and beautiful small display booths.

Thanh Ha, in charge of the main reception role, stands at the gate with the registration list, checks and guides each group of guests into the waiting area. "The number of registrations is full," she reported to Nhat Quang via walkie-talkie, her voice both excited and a bit nervous. "There were even some people who came without registering in advance. I'm explaining to them to stand in the backup area outside."

"Just handle it according to the backup plan we agreed on," Nhat Quang replied over the radio, his voice calm even though everyone could feel the tension hidden behind it. "Prioritize safety first, do not exceed approved maximum capacity."

Ngoc Han, who had just finished checking the sound for her presentation, ran to the reception area to assist when she saw a larger number of people arriving than expected. Amidst the bustling crowd, she suddenly noticed a familiar figure approaching from afar - it was Mr. Sau, in a rarely seen neat shirt, holding a small bouquet of flowers.

"Are you here so early?" Ngoc Han asked, surprised and happy.

"I wanted to come early to help Quang. Besides," Mr. Sau smiled gently, giving her the bouquet of flowers, "I wanted to personally congratulate you before the ceremony started. You have done something very proud."

Ngoc Han received the bouquet of flowers, touched beyond words by that unexpected warm gesture. She hugged Mr. Sau gently, whispered thanks before continuing to return to her unfinished work.

At around six o'clock in the afternoon, Mr. Dat and the school board were also present for overall supervision, ensuring all safety plans were strictly followed as committed. "Everything looks so professional," the teacher commented, nodding with satisfaction as he went around inspecting the entire area. "I believe tonight will be a memorable night for everyone."

Ngoc Han stood looking at the growing crowd, clearly feeling her heart beat faster with each passing moment, as the moment the whole club had been waiting for many months was finally approaching. She looked around, watched the sparkling string lights gradually being turned on as the sky darkened, looked at the eager faces of the guests looking for seats, and felt an indescribable pride rising in her chest, thinking about the long and arduous road that the whole club had overcome together to get to this moment.

Around seven o'clock in the evening, Ms. Lan also arrived, wearing an elegant turquoise ao dai, holding a small camera. "I want to take lots of photos to preserve this important moment for you," she said, hugging her daughter, her eyes shining with undisguised pride.

"Thank you for coming, Mom," Ngoc Han said, her voice emotional, leading her to the seating area reserved for families of key members, which has the most beautiful view straight to the main observation area.

Nhat Quang, taking advantage of the rare silence between busy work, came to Ngoc Han's side and gently held her hand. "There's about half an hour left until the program officially starts," he said, his voice both nervous and excited. "Are you ready for your share?"

"I think so," Ngoc Han replied, taking a deep breath. "No matter how shaky I am, I know I'm prepared enough to be able to get through it."

"I believe you will do very well," Nhat Quang said, gently squeezing her hand, his eyes filled with sincere encouragement. "And no matter the outcome, I'm already so proud of you, proud of everything you've overcome to be able to stand here, tonight, ready to share your own story."

Far away, on the horizon, the first streaks of sunset are gradually giving way to darkness, and the first stars are starting to peek out from the dark blue sky, as if waiting as eagerly as the guests filling the rows of seats below, all waiting for the moment the legendary Perseids meteor shower officially begins.

Backstage, Ngoc Han stood with Thanh Ha and two technical friends, reviewing the order of the sections in the program one last time. The volume of the wireless microphone is checked, and the presentation slide screen is tested to ensure there are no last-minute technical problems. Although the backstage atmosphere was somewhat hectic, order was still maintained thanks to careful preparation over the past many months.

"Everything's fine," a technician reported, giving a thumbs up sign. "The main telescope has been aligned to the optimal viewing angle, and the two secondary telescopes for visitors are also ready."

Ngoc Han nodded, glanced at her watch, there were only about fifteen minutes left until the official opening time. She took a deep breath, trying to calm the nerves rolling in her heart, telling herself that all the careful preparation over the past months would not let her down on this important night.

From afar, she saw Mr. Dat walking onto the small stage temporarily set up to prepare for the opening speech, while Nhat Quang was standing next to him, holding a piece of paper with notes on the content of the speech, his face both serious and unable to hide his excitement. That scene made Ngoc Han feel an indescribable emotion, when she realized that, in just a few minutes, all the efforts, sweat, tears, and love that the whole team had built together over the past months and days would officially be lit up under the starry night sky.
