Chapter 29 — Contract of the Heart

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Tan Viet High School's graduation ceremony took place on a late August morning, under a clear blue sky dotted with a few floating white clouds. The schoolyard was brightly decorated with flags, flowers, congratulatory banners, and hundreds of twelfth grade students dressed in neat uniforms, everyone's faces were radiant and a little nervous at the threshold of saying goodbye to the school they had been with for three years.

Thảo Nguyên stood in line with her classmates, her eyes constantly searching for Việt Anh's figure in the opposite row of seats reserved for the nature block. When their eyes met, they both smiled, a connection that quietly transcended the distance of the formal ceremony.

The ceremony took place with full ceremony — speech from the principal, awarding of diplomas, honoring excellent students. When Việt Anh's name was announced on the list of students with the highest achievements in the natural division, along with the announcement of the prestigious study abroad scholarship he had just won, the whole schoolyard applauded loudly, and Thảo Nguyên clapped the loudest among them, her eyes filled with tears of pride.

After the official ceremony, the school yard became bustling with groups of friends gathering to take souvenir photos, hugging each other, crying and laughing before the upcoming farewell moment. Thảo Nguyên went to Việt Anh as soon as possible, the two hugged each other in the crowd, no longer afraid of anyone's eyes.

"Congratulations," she said, her voice filled with pride. "The best student in the natural grade, and even won a prestigious scholarship to study abroad. I always knew you could do it."

"Thank you," Việt Anh replied, a bright smile rarely seen on his face. "Without you, I probably wouldn't have gotten this far."

Bích Vân ran over, dragging Diệu Anh with her. The whole group took a souvenir photogether under the old poinciana tree in the middle of the school yard - a place that witnessed so many happy and sad memories during the three years of high school.

"Remember to keep in touch," Bích Vân told Việt Anh, half joking and half serious. "If you dare to make Thảo Nguyên sad even a little bit, I will find a way to fly to Germany and scold you."

"I promise I won't let that happen," Việt Anh replied, smiling, although there was still a hint of sincerity in his eyes.

Diệu Anh also approached and hugged them both goodbye with a warm and sincere attitude. "I wish you both happiness," she said. "Don't let distance fade away what we've built together. I believe we're both strong enough to overcome it."

The Robotics team also held a small farewell party for Việt Anh at the familiar club room, where he had been for three years as team captain. Quang Huy, who will take over the team captain position next year, gave him a special souvenir - a miniature robot model assembled by the team members themselves, engraved with Việt Anh's name and the words "Best captain of all time" on the base of the model.

"Thank you everyone," Việt Anh said, his voice rarely choked as he held the gift in his hand, admiring every small detail meticulously assembled by the members. "I will take it with me to Germany, so that every time I miss home or miss everyone, I can look at it here."

The whole team surrounded him, taking turns hugging and saying goodbye to him. Everyone could not hide their nostalgia for the departure of the captain who had led them to the highest achievement in the club's history.

In the days after graduation, time seemed to pass faster than ever. Việt Anh was busy completing the application procedures for studying abroad, applying for a visa, and preparing luggage, while Thảo Nguyên was also busy with applying to domestic universities, and trying to spend every remaining free moment to be with Việt Anh before the separation day.

Together they walked around familiar places that were associated with both of their stories - the small tea shop where they signed their first contract, the park where Việt Anh confessed his true feelings, the school library where essay writing lessons silently sowed the seeds of sincere love. Each location carries its own memories, which both of them review with a smile mixed with a bit of trepidation.

At the old tea shop, the shop owner recognized two regular customers and did not forget to ask. "You two rarely visit my restaurant these days," she said, scooping up a full bowl of green bean soup for each of them. "I heard you're going to study abroad, congratulations."

"Yes, thank you," Việt Anh replied, smiling, his eyes gliding around the familiar space of the small sweet soup shop, where memories of the first afternoon the two of them sat down to discuss the terms of the contract were serious but also full of innocence.

"Remember to take this girl with you," the shop owner teased, making them both blush, not knowing how to respond properly.

The evening before Việt Anh left, both families held a warm farewell meal at Mrs. Xuân's house. She prepared all his favorite Vietnamese dishes, not forgetting to remind him to maintain his health and eat moderately in a foreign land.

"Remember to call home often," Mrs. Xuân advised, her voice full of concern. "Don't let your studies get carried away and forget to take care of yourself."

"I remember," Việt Anh replied, bowing his head politely. "I will try to study well, so as not to disappoint everyone's expectations, and also to have the opportunity to return home soon."

Mrs. Hoa also attended the farewell meal, bringing a hand-woven wool scarf as a gift for her grandson to take with him to cold Europe. "I've been knitting this since I heard you passed the scholarship," she said, her voice full of affection, wrapping the scarf around Việt Anh's neck. "German winter is very cold, remember to keep warm."

"Thank you, grandmother," Việt Anh said, his voice choked as he hugged her, feeling the warm love from the grandmother who had always silently taken care of him since childhood.

After dinner, while the parents were sitting and chatting at home, Thảo Nguyên and Việt Anh quietly went out into the yard, standing in the moonlight as they had done many times before during the past four turbulent months.

"Tomorrow is the day you leave," Thảo Nguyên said, trying to keep her voice calm even though her heart was aching because she was about to leave the person she loved.

"Yes," Việt Anh nodded, pulled her into his arms, hugged her tightly as if wanting to completely remember this warm feeling before having to leave for a long time. "But this is not the end, just a new chapter in our story."

"I know," Thảo Nguyên replied, looking up at him, trying to smile even though tears had begun to fall. "I will wait for you, no matter how long it takes."

Việt Anh bent down, placed a gentle kiss on her lips, the first kiss and also the most sincere promise the two had ever exchanged, under the silver moonlight illuminating the small yard where their magical love story began with a lie, and was now entering a new chapter, full of challenges but also full of hope.

The next morning, the whole family took Việt Anh to the airport. The check-in area was crowded with people, the loudspeaker announcing the flight rang continuously, but it seemed that no one in the small group standing next to the security door paid attention to the noise around them, all their minds were focused on the upcoming farewell moment.

"Go well, my child," Mrs. Xuân hugged Việt Anh one last time, her voice trembling with emotion. "Remember to stay healthy, study hard, and don't forget to call your family often."

Mr. Minh patted his son's shoulder, his eyes filled with both pride and a little sadness of a father who had to leave his son for the first time for a long time. "I believe you will do well," he said briefly but with great force.

When it was Thảo Nguyên's turn, Việt Anh hugged her tightly, whispering in her ear: "Wait for me. I will return, or I will find a way to take you there, one way or another."

"I'll wait," she replied, tears kept falling but her mouth still tried to smile in encouragement, her hand holding his hand tightly until the last moment before being forced to let go. He turned around and walked through the security door, occasionally looking back and waving, until his figure disappeared behind the crowd, leaving Thảo Nguyên standing there, heartbroken with nostalgia and full of hope for a future that they were both committed to building together, no matter how far the geographical distance was.

Mrs. Xuân took her granddaughter's hand and led her out of the airport in silence, letting the tears flow without having to suppress or explain, because she understood better than anyone what it was like to wait for someone you love to return after a long journey.
