Chapter 20 — Forty Billion And People Only Ask For A Kitchen

After the conversation, Ngoc Han did not call us for a week.

Duc Tai went to Moc Bep, but was blocked outside the gate by security. He sent a letter asking me to prove my source of capital, along with a threat to sue because he thought I used family money to open the company.

Lawyers respond with reward documents, payment statements and property agreements. Duc Tai was silent.

I thought it would last a long time, but a month later, the court issued a decision to seize his company's assets. Trucks, decorative equipment and warehouses were auctioned, only enough to pay off part of the debt.

Ngoc Han called Minh Khang and said she wanted to find a job herself.

“Is Moc Bep still recruiting people?”

He passed the phone to me.

“What position do you want to do?”

"Packaging, reception, storage. Anything goes."

I suggest you come for an interview like any other candidate. Ngoc Han arrived on time, wearing an old shirt, without elaborate makeup. Thao asked if she could work the early shift.

I offered a three-month probationary contract, salary according to company standards, no priority given to family members. Ngoc Han read carefully and signed.

On the first day, she packed nearly a hundred boxes with the wrong label. Thao started again. She didn't argue, just took off her gloves and started from the beginning.

That night, Mrs. Huong called to ask if I was causing trouble for her daughter.

“I treat her like an employee.”

“That's only fair.”

She was silent for a long time then said:

“I think you'll chase it away.”

"If she doesn't do well, I will let her quit. If she does well, I will pay her a fair salary."

A month later, Ngoc Han mastered the warehouse process. She no longer calls me sister-in-law in front of the staff; she calls me director. Every time a customer complains, she listens before explaining.

Thao said she changed.

I replied:

“Maybe it's just her first time working in a place where no one is afraid of her.”

Not everyone who changes needs to be forgiven immediately. But if they do it from the beginning, at least we can stop seeing them as enemies.
