Chapter 14 — Pride And Scholarship

Three days later, when Hoai An went to the hospital cashier to pay an additional portion of the hospital fee, she was stunned when the staff informed her that most of the treatment costs for this round of treatment had been paid in advance by an anonymous person.

“Who paid the money?” Hoai An asked, her voice filled with surprise and confusion.

“Sorry, the payer requested anonymity,” the cashier replied, “we cannot disclose this information.”

Hoai An stood silently, his mind immediately thinking of Minh Khoi. She hurriedly called him as soon as she left the cashier counter, her voice was somewhat tense. “Did you pay my mother's hospital bills?”

Minh Khoi was silent for a moment before admitting, his voice a bit hesitant. "Yes, it's me. I just want to help you relieve some of the pressure during this difficult time."

Instead of being touched like Minh Khoi expected, Hoai An felt a stream of complex emotions rising, mixed between gratitude and a deep sense of self-love. “Why did you do that without asking me first?” she asked, her voice a bit harsher than she wanted, “I don't want to be a burden, or a charity project to make you feel good about yourself.”

“It's not like that,” Minh Khoi quickly explained, his voice somewhat panicked at this unexpected reaction, “I simply want to help the person I care about, nothing else.”

"But do you know," Hoai An continued, her voice trembling with mixed emotions, "I've tried all these years not to have to rely on anyone's pity. The fact that you secretly paid for the hospital bill without consulting me, even though it came from good intentions, makes me feel like I'm being considered an object that needs alms."

Minh Khoi was stunned by those words, not expecting that his action stemming from sincere feelings would accidentally touch Hoai An's sensitive self-esteem. "I'm sorry," he said, his voice low, "I didn't think of that. I just wanted to help you, and didn't mean any disrespect or pity."

"I understand your good intentions," Hoai An replied, her voice softened a bit but the hurt was still intact, "but I need you to respect my decision to take care of my own life. I will find a way to repay that money, no matter how long it takes."

“You don't have to do that,” Minh Khoi protested, but Hoai An hung up before he could say more, leaving him standing there feeling confused and hurt by the unexpected reaction from the person he cared deeply about.

As for Hoai An, after hanging up the phone, she sat down on a stone chair in the hospital hallway, feeling a fleeting feeling of regret at her somewhat harsh reaction. She understood that Minh Khoi was completely motivated by sincere feelings, but the obsession of being despised and pitied because of her poor circumstances had been ingrained in her mind for many years, causing her to overreact to an action that should have been appreciated.

In the following days, the atmosphere between Hoai An and Minh Khoi became more awkward than before. She deliberately kept her distance, only exchanging necessary study stories, avoiding intimate conversations like before. Minh Khoi, although feeling hurt by this unexpected coldness, still patiently respected the space that Hoai An needed, without adding pressure.

“What's going on between you and Minh Khoi?” Lan Phuong asked, noticing the obvious change in the two people's attitudes, "I see you two haven't talked much lately."

“It's nothing,” Hoai An replied, trying to act normal, even though her heart was still filled with complicated unresolved emotions.

That night, when confiding in Thao Nhi on the phone, Hoai An recounted the whole incident, her voice still a little confused. “I don't know if my reaction was right,” she said, “I know Khoi only wants the best for me, but I really don't want to be seen as someone who needs pity.”

"I understand how you feel," Thao Nhi replied, her voice thoughtful, "but you should also look at the problem from Khoi's perspective. He did it because he truly loved you, not because he despised you. Maybe you should talk frankly with him, instead of keeping such a distance."

"I think so too," Hoai An admitted, sighing, "but I still need more time to sort out my feelings. I don't want to hurt both of you more because of haste."

As for Minh Khoi, after a few days of silence, he found Tung - no, he found his only close friend at his new school, a guy named Duc Anh, to confide in him about this awkward situation. “I don't understand where I went wrong,” Minh Khoi said, his voice filled with confusion, “I just wanted to help, why did I hurt him like that?”

"Do you think," Duc Anh said, after listening to the whole story, "sometimes, other people's self-esteem is more important than what you think is good for them? Maybe Hoai An wants to overcome difficulties on his own, not because he doesn't need help, but because he needs to respect his right to make his own decisions."

That comment made Minh Khoi ponder for a long time. He realized that, even though it came from good intentions, the way he acted - silently deciding instead of discussing it first - unintentionally took away the autonomy that Hoai An had always cherished and tried to preserve for many years.

“I think I need to apologize to him more sincerely,” Minh Khoi said, his voice assertive, “not just to make peace, but to truly understand and respect his feelings.”

That evening, Minh Khoi composed a long message, sincerely apologizing for not consulting before acting, and reaffirming his absolute respect for Hoai An's self-esteem and independence. He sent that message with a mixture of excitement and hope, hoping that these sincere words would help mend the gap that was gradually forming between the two of them.

Hoai An read the message as soon as it appeared on the screen, each sincere word made her emotional. "I'm sorry for not consulting you first," Minh Khoi wrote, "I understand that my actions, even though they came from sincere feelings, unintentionally made you feel like your autonomy was overlooked. I promise, from now on, whatever I want to do to help you, I will always ask your opinion first, because I respect you, respect the way you want to build your own life."

Tears welled up in Hoai An's eyes when reading the last paragraph, not because of hurt, but because of being touched by the deep understanding that Minh Khoi showed. She texted back immediately, her tone was equally sincere. "Thank you for understanding. I'm also sorry for reacting too harshly, I know you only want the best for me."

"Are we okay?" Minh Khoi texted back, his tone full of hope.

"We're fine," Hoai An replied, a relieved smile appearing on her lips for the first time after many stressful days, "thank you for always being patient and understanding, Khoi."

That short conversation helped heal most of the distance between the two, although Hoai An still firmly maintained her intention to find a way to refund the hospital fees, not because she did not appreciate Minh Khoi's heart, but because she wanted to prove to herself that, even in the most difficult circumstances, she could still stand on her own two feet.

The next morning, when they met again in class, they were both somewhat awkward, but the atmosphere had become much more relaxed compared to the past stressful days. “Are you okay?” Minh Khoi asked, his voice full of concern.

“I'm fine,” Hoai An replied, smiling, “thank you for understanding and respecting my feelings.”

“I should be the one thanking you,” Minh Khoi said, “for giving me the opportunity to better understand how to love someone properly, not just based on my own subjective wishes.”

They both smiled, the initial awkwardness gradually disappeared, giving way to a deeper understanding between the two, a more solid foundation for the relationship that is gradually developing between them, despite the small challenges and misunderstandings that may appear in the future, when both are learning to balance sincere love and respect for the other's self-esteem, a valuable lesson that not every couple has the opportunity to understand right from the first steps of their relationship. relationship, and that same lesson will become a solid foundation for what you both will build together in the future.
