Chapter 28 — Pride And Scholarship

The graduation ceremony from Royal High School took place on a sunny morning in early summer, in a large hall brightly decorated with flags, flowers and congratulatory banners. All twelfth grade students, dressed in formal graduation gowns, along with their families and teachers, gathered to witness the important moment marking the end of a meaningful three-year journey.

Hoai An stood in the ranks of students, wearing the school's signature navy blue graduation gown, filled with mixed emotions - both proud of what he had achieved and nostalgic about having to say goodbye to the school that had become his second home for the past three years.

The principal stepped up to the podium to speak, his eyes scanning the entire student body with undisguised pride. "Dear students," he said, his voice was solemn but full of emotion, "these past three years, you have gone through so many challenges together, so many memorable moments. Today, when I look at you in these graduation gowns, I firmly believe that each of you is ready to step out into the wider world, carrying with you the good values that this school has tried to cultivate."

Next, the representative of the outstanding student was invited to express his feelings, and Hoai An, with his outstanding academic achievements and meaningful contributions to the "Reach Len" scholarship fund, was honored to be chosen as the representative.

She stepped onto the podium, looked down at all her friends, teachers, and family sitting below, took a deep breath before speaking. “Three years ago,” she began, her voice trembling slightly but filled with determination, “I entered this school with a heart full of anxiety and low self-esteem, not knowing whether I could integrate into this completely strange environment or not.”

She recounted, sincerely, an overview of the challenging journey she went through - from the early days of being doubted and oppressed, until finding kind friends and teachers who helped her overcome all difficulties. “But through all those challenges,” she continued, her eyes looking towards Bao Tran sitting in the row of students, smiling encouragingly, “I learned the most valuable lesson — that the value of a person does not lie in the circumstances of origin, but in strength, self-esteem, and the ability to treat those around you sincerely.”

Hoai An's speech received a warm and prolonged applause, many people in the hall could not hide their tears of emotion at this inspirational story.

“I also want to send my sincere thanks,” Hoai An continued, her voice choked up, “to my mother, who sacrificed her whole life to raise me as a person; to teacher Quang, who always protects the rights of disadvantaged students; and to all my friends who have accompanied and supported me through every challenge.”

She looked down at the row of chairs where Ms. Hanh was sitting, her eyes filled with tears of pride. "Especially," Hoai An continued, her voice warmer, "I want to thank the friend who was once my rival, but has now become my closest sister - Bao Tran. Thank you for teaching me that, sometimes, the people we think are the most different can become the most meaningful companions in life."

Bao Tran, sitting in the student row, couldn't hold back her tears In response to this public gratitude, he raised his hand and waved emotionally.

"Finally," Hoai An ended her speech, her voice ringing with determination, "I hope all of you, no matter where you go or what you do in the future, will always maintain your self-esteem, sincerity, and never let your background define your true value. Thank you Royal School for giving me the opportunity to grow up, to find myself."

The speech ended in endless applause, many students and parents stood up and applauded, some could not hide their emotional tears at the inspiring journey that this resilient scholarship girl shared.

After the speeches, the ceremony continued with the awarding of diplomas to each student. When Hoai An's name was announced, she walked up to the podium to receive her diploma from the principal. Flash lights from hundreds of phones of parents and friends blinked continuously to record this memorable moment.

“Congratulations,” the principal said, shaking Hoai An's hand, his voice filled with pride, “you are the greatest pride of Royal School for many years.”

“Thank you, teacher,” Hoai An replied, bowing his head politely, “I will always carry with me the values that the school has taught me over the past three years.”

When it was Bao Tran's turn, the principal also gave her special praise for her incredible growth in thinking and personality over the past time. Bao Tran received her diploma with a radiant smile, her eyes sparkling with happiness as she looked down at the row of chairs where her mother, Mrs. Kim Ngan, was clapping endlessly, unable to hide her pride for her daughter.

Minh Khoi, when receiving his diploma, also received an equally warm round of applause, especially from Hoai An who was standing in the row of students, her eyes filled with pride and love for her boyfriend who had accompanied her for more than two years.

After the diploma awarding ceremony ended, the whole school held a small outdoor party on the school grounds, where students, parents, and teachers could freely chat and take souvenir photos before officially saying goodbye to this beloved school. The atmosphere was both joyful and mixed with a bit of nostalgia and trepidation of people who were about to leave each other to embark on new journeys.

Hoai An, Bao Tran, Minh Khoi, Lan Phuong and Thao Nhi gathered to take a last souvenir photo under the canopy of the old poinciana tree in front of the school yard, where they witnessed so many memories during the past three school years.

“I will miss this place very much,” Bao Tran said, her voice a bit choked as she looked around the familiar campus, “I will miss the Olympic practice sessions, I will miss the book club, I will miss my first arguments with Hoai An.”

The whole group laughed at that humorous reminder. “I will also miss this place,” Hoai An said, her voice filled with emotion, “this is the place that changed my life, gave me the best friends, teachers, and love I have ever had.”

Minh Khoi put his arm around Hoai An's shoulder and smiled at her. “And this is just the beginning,” he said, “we have a long journey ahead, many more interesting things are waiting.”

The whole group nodded in agreement, posing together to take a few final commemorative photos Finally, save this precious moment as an important milestone, closing a beautiful chapter in a student's life, to prepare to open new, promising chapters ahead.

Ms. Hanh, standing with Mrs. Kim Ngan and the parents of other friends in a corner of the school yard, observed the group of children taking pictures, unable to hide her happiness. “Seeing the children so happy, I feel warm inside,” Ms. Hanh said to Ms. Kim Ngan.

“That's right,” Mrs. Kim Ngan replied, smiling, “three years ago, I never thought that my daughter could grow up and be as happy as she is today, all thanks to the precious friendship with your daughter.”

"Both of you have taught each other valuable lessons," Ms. Hanh replied, her eyes looking towards her children with affection, "I believe, that friendship will remain strong forever, even if you go on different paths in the future."

Two mothers stood side by side, watching their children laughing happily under the red phoenix tree, a beautiful image that completely closed the story of friendship, love, and meaningful growth that took place during three years of studying at this prestigious Royal School.

Late in the afternoon, when the ceremony ended and most people had left, Hoai An stayed a little longer, taking a last walk around the campus before leaving. She stopped by the library, where she and Bao Tran used to read books together; Stop by the gymnasium, where the whole team once practiced diligently for the Olympic competition; and finally stopped in front of the hallway where she collided with Bao Tran on the stormy first day of school.

Minh Khoi came and stood next to her, looking back at the familiar scene. “What memories are you recalling?” he asked, putting his arm around her shoulders.

“I'm remembering the first morning I collided with Bao Tran,” Hoai An replied, smiling nostalgically, “at that time I could never have imagined that that seemingly bad collision would actually be the beginning of such a beautiful journey.”

“Life is truly full of surprises,” Minh Khoi said, gently squeezing her shoulder, “and I'm glad to be a part of your unexpected, wonderful journey.”

The two of them stood there for a while longer, watching the sunset dye the entire campus, before leaving the school gate together for the last time as students, carrying with them countless precious memories and a heart full of hope for the new chapters waiting ahead.
