Chapter 30 — Pride And Scholarship

Six years later.

University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, third floor, a bright early summer morning with bright yellow sunlight shining through the hallway window. Doctor Tran Hoai An, wearing a white blouse that was slightly worn at the wrist due to repeated washing, walked quickly and confidently along the hallway, holding a medical file in her hand, her eyes still shining with the familiar dedication that any of her colleagues would recognize.

"Doctor An," a young nurse called out, "the patient in bed 12 is asking when you will come back to see me. She keeps mentioning your name."

“I'll be right here,” Hoai An replied, smiling, turning into the hospital room, where a boy about seven years old was sitting on the bed, his face lighting up when he saw her enter.

That has been a familiar image every day for the past six years, since the day Hoai An officially graduated from medical school with an excellent degree, then continued to study Pediatrics, the major she chose from the very beginning, partly inspired by the journey her mother went through in the hospital that year.

After the morning shift, Hoai An took advantage of her lunch break to make a video call to her mother. Ms. Hanh, now completely healthy, is running a small but crowded tailor shop on the same old street where mother and daughter lived during their most difficult years.

"Mom, I'm off work," Hoai An said through the phone screen, her voice still filled with familiar warmth, "Khoi and I will come over to eat tonight, mom, don't cook too much."

"I've cooked your favorite dish," Ms. Hanh replied, smiling gently, "besides, I invited Ms. Bao Tran, she just came back from abroad and said she wanted to visit her mother before coming over to your house."

True to Ms. Hanh's words, that evening, when Hoai An and Minh Khoi - now her husband after a simple but warm wedding held two years ago, after both completed their studies and settled down in their jobs - returned to the small but spacious house that the family had moved into thanks to many years of savings, they saw Bao Tran already sitting in the living room, chatting loudly with Ms. Hanh.

“Bao Tran!” Hoai An exclaimed, running to hug his best friend, who is now a famous young writer, whose first novel inspired by their friendship has reached the bestseller list and is being translated into many different languages.

“I miss you so much,” Bao Tran replied, hugging her friend tightly, “after six months of studying abroad, I just look forward to coming back to see everyone again.”

Minh Khoi, now the young CEO of an educational technology startup he founded - with the mission of connecting talented poor students with scholarships and learning opportunities, directly inspired by his own wife's story - also came to shake hands and hug Bao Tran as closely as a sister.

The dinner took place warmly, filled with laughter, reviewing many memories of the student years at Royal School - from the first days full of turbulence and confrontation, until they all became close friends and people for the rest of their lives.

“Do you remember,” Bao Tran said, in the middle of the meal, her voice filled with nostalgia, “in the past, I used to hate Hoai An just because he was better than me?”

“How could I forget,” Minh Khoi laughed, “at that time I was worried that you two would fight right in the middle of the school yard Yes.”

The whole dining table burst into laughter at the joke, a warm, intimate atmosphere filled the small room. Ms. Hanh, sitting at the head of the table, looked around at the dear faces that had accompanied her family for many years, unable to hide the complete happiness shining in her eyes.

After dinner, when everyone went to the backyard to enjoy the cool air, Bao Tran recounted her recent training trip, and Hoai An shared about her upcoming plan - opening a small charity clinic in the old neighborhood where she grew up, to support free medical examination and treatment for children in difficult circumstances every weekend.

“I think,” Hoai An said, her eyes shining with familiar enthusiasm, “I have received so much help on my journey to adulthood, now it's time for me to return those good things to the community, to the children who are in the same situation as me in the past.”

“I will support you wholeheartedly,” Bao Tran replied immediately, without any hesitation, “I am also thinking of deducting part of the royalties from my upcoming book to contribute to the "Reach Up" scholarship fund. After all, it was your story and mine that inspired that book.”

“I will also support the technology side,” Minh Khoi contributed, “my company can build a free patient record management platform for your clinic.”

The three friends, now grown up, each pursuing their own career path but still connected and supporting each other in every plan and dream, continue to write meaningful new chapters of their lives together, based on the foundation of friendship that has been forged through many challenges since their high school days.

Three months later, a small charity clinic named "Light" officially opened in the small alley where Hoai An grew up. The opening ceremony was simple but warm, attended by Ms. Hanh, Minh Khoi, Bao Tran, and many old friends from high school - Lan Phuong is now an engineer, Thao Nhi has become a teacher, all came to celebrate and support this meaningful project.

Even Ms. Kim Ngan, despite her busy work, also arranged time to attend, bringing with her a significant contribution to the clinic's operating fund. “I always believe,” she said in a short speech at the ceremony, “that you will continue to spread good values, just like you changed an entire school many years ago.”

On the afternoon of the opening, when the guests had left, only a group of close friends remained sitting in the small clinic, looking at the "Light" sign hanging in front of the door, Hoai An couldn't help but feel emotional when thinking about the long journey she had gone through.

"From a poor, scared, lost girl entering Royal School," she said, her voice choked up, "I never dared to dream that one day I would stand here, opening my own clinic, to help children in the same situation as me."

“You deserve all these good things,” Minh Khoi said, holding his wife's hand tightly, his eyes filled with pride and love, “with the same strength, kindness, and resilience that you have shown over the years.”

“And I'm proud to be your best friend,” Bao Tran added, smiling, her eyes shining with sincere happiness, “from your rival. Becoming sisters is the best thing my student life has ever brought.”

The sunset gradually falls, dyeing the familiar small alley yellow, which has witnessed many ups and downs in Hoai An's life, from the most difficult days to today's moment of perfect happiness. She stood there, among her closest loved ones, filled with gratitude for a journey that taught her that a poor background is not a barrier, but a motivation to rise, that human dignity does not lie in possessions, but in strength, kindness, and the ability to turn the harshest challenges into opportunities to shine, to spread good things to those around her.

The story of the poor girl who once struggled with the most arrogant lady at the Royal School, has now ended with a complete, fulfilling ending - not only for Hoai An, but for everyone who accompanied her through that meaningful journey, a journey that proves that, as long as they are resilient enough and sincere enough, anyone can write their own beautiful story of life, no matter how difficult the initial starting point is.

The next morning, the first official working day of the "Light" clinic, a girl about fifteen years old timidly walked in, clutching a worn old school bag. That is Nha Uyen, a first-year student at Hoang Gia School, one of the children who recently received the "Reach Len" scholarship, and brought her grandmother to the doctor for a long-term joint pain.

"I heard from Ms. Hanh," Nha Uyen said, her voice still hesitant, "this doctor studied at the Royal School and also received a scholarship, right?"

“That's right,” Hoai An replied, smiling warmly, sitting down at her eye level, “eight years ago, I was also in the position you are now — worried, confused, not knowing if I had enough strength to keep up with my friends or not.”

“So how did you get over it?” the girl asked, her eyes filled with hope and curiosity.

“By believing in yourself,” Hoai An replied, gently placing his hand on her shoulder, “and by remembering that your starting circumstances do not determine how far you will go, only your perseverance will determine that.”

After examining Nha Uyen's grandmother, prescribing medicine and giving careful instructions, Hoai An spent another fifteen minutes chatting and sharing learning experiences with the girl, just like Mr. Quang, Ms. Hanh, and so many other kind people did for her many years ago. Looking at Nha Uyen's radiant eyes as she left, Hoai An clearly felt that the cycle of kindness and sharing that she had once received was now continuing to be spread to a new generation, in exactly the way she always wanted.

Standing in front of the small clinic door, watching the silhouettes of Nha Uyen and her grandmother disappear at the end of the alley, Hoai An smiled slightly, filled with confidence that her journey, even though it had gone a long and meaningful way, would still continue to write many more beautiful chapters, not only for her, but for everyone who has the courage to believe in their own dreams, no matter how humble the initial starting point.

END.
