Chapter 17
Chapter 17 — Seventy-Eight Billion And The President Has No Heir
The recall meeting was held on the top floor.
Khai gave three reasons: Vu was missing for too long, his health was unstable, and he was controlled by a shareholder outside his family. The last person is me. He showed a photo of me walking out of the bank, with the bonus chart highlighted in red.
I raised my hand.
“I recommend releasing all documents before assessing the health of others.”
Khai tapped his hammer.
“An Minh shareholders can speak but do not have the right to turn the meeting into a place to tell personal stories.”
Vu sat at the back of the room, not speaking. Let me present a series of transactions showing that the money withdrawn from the Tan Cuong fund was transferred to Chau's media company. When the chart appeared, a few small shareholders changed seats.
Chau stood up.
"She only has one lottery ticket. Who knows if it's real or not?"
I placed the bank-verified reward certificate on the table.
"I don't need people to believe I'm rich. I need people to check where the money goes."
A council member asked Vu why he didn't say he was alive. Vu replied:
“Because if I showed up sooner, the records keeper wouldn't have time to back it up.”
Khai got angry and accused Vu of orchestrating the accident. Hoang Nam broadcast video from a harbor camera, showing the explosion occurred before Vu boarded the ship. The train driver died, but the insurance records remained.
The vote was postponed because of a legal emergency. Khai left the room and approached me.
"You can take the money and leave. People like you don't belong at this table."
"I used to think so too. Until you guys used my signature."
When the elevator closed, Vu asked:
“Aren't you scared?”
"Yes. But my biggest fear is that one day I will look back and see that I had enough money to protect others but only used it to hide."
He did not reply. Arriving at the parking lot, a motorbike passed by. Vu pulled me aside, the stone hit the rear window.
On the piece of paper tied to the stone was a number: 17.
Warehouse number 17. Where Vinh was attacked. Where the truck was recorded. They are reminding me that they know our weaknesses.
Khang called, his voice strange.
“An, mom just disappeared from the house.”
