Chapter 25 — The Photograph Without a Third Person

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Four months of preparation passed faster than Ha ever imagined. The wedding was scheduled for an early autumn morning, when Hanoi's weather began to change to cool days, with pale yellow sunlight spreading throughout the space and no longer being as hot as last summer.

The location they chose was exactly what they both wanted — a small garden in the suburbs, owned by an old friend of Mrs. Kim Oanh, where rows of ancient trees cast cool shade and a small sparkling lotus pond reflected the morning sunlight. There is no elaborate luxury of five-star hotels, only the warm simplicity that both Ha and Gia Bao appreciate.

"Are you nervous?" Dieu Thao asked while helping Ha adjust her wedding dress in the small dressing room, her voice was as excited as the bride.

"Yes," Ha admitted, her hands shaking slightly as she fixed a small hairpin. "But it's not because I'm worried. It's just... I didn't think I would be in this position, being the bride instead of the one holding the camera."

"So let someone else take care of taking pictures today," Dieu Thao said, smiling confidently. "I have learned from you for many years, today is the time for me to return the favor."

Dieu Thao volunteered to take on the role of main photographer for the wedding, a decision they both agreed on from the beginning — no one else could understand Ha's photography style and philosophy better than the student who accompanied her through the most difficult years.

When Ha walked out of the dressing room in a simple white wedding dress, not elaborate with floral lace or sparkling stones, but just a minimalist design that accentuated her natural beauty, Mrs. Kim Oanh could not hold back her tears.

"You're so beautiful, Ngoc Ha," she said, hugging her son's future bride. "I never thought I would have a day as happy as this, after everything our family has been through."

"Me too, mom," Ha replied, emotionally hugging her back. "Thank you, Mom, for welcoming me into your family."

Mr. Tran Dat - Ha's biological father, who accompanied her throughout the journey to find justice for Gia Bao - stood waiting at the beginning of the aisle, ready to lead his daughter down the aisle. He was dressed in a neat suit, his face filled with pride that he had never shown so clearly in Ha's entire life.

“My daughter,” he said softly, his voice choked. "I never imagined this day would be so emotional."

"Dad has always supported me in every decision, even the most dangerous ones," Ha said, holding his hand tightly. "I'm grateful to you, Dad, for that."

Background music played gently, signaling the moment the ceremony officially began. Ha took her father's arm and took the first steps on the path covered with white flower petals, towards the man waiting for her at the end of the path.

Gia Bao stood there, in an elegant gray suit, his eyes did not leave Ha for even a second as she approached. His eyes shone with the light that only sincere love can bring — not wonder at external beauty, but deep understanding for the woman who accompanied him through his darkest days.

When Ha came to him, her father gave her hand to Gia Bao with a trusting squeeze. "Take good care of my daughter," he said softly.

"I promise, father," Gia Bao replied, his voice firm and filled with determination.

The ceremony took place in a warm, simple but emotional atmosphere. When it came to exchanging vows, Gia Bao held Ha's hand, his eyes never leaving her.

"Ngoc Ha," he said, his voice ringing clearly in the quiet garden, "you came into my life at a time when I thought I had lost everything, and you gave me a reason to believe in justice, in love, and in myself again. I promise to always be by your side, to cherish the truth that you always pursue, and to build with you a life filled with sincerity the way you live every day."

Tears rolled down Ha's cheeks as she responded to her vow. "Gia Bao, when I first saw you in photo number seventeen, I had no idea that fortuitous moment would lead me on a life-changing journey. You taught me that the truth, no matter how difficult, is always worth pursuing, and that true love can flourish even in the darkest of circumstances. I promise to always stand by your side, using my lens to capture the truest moments of our lives."

When the two exchanged wedding rings, the sound of applause and tears of happiness spread throughout the small garden. Dieu Thao, standing behind the camera lens, could not hide her emotional tears when recording that sacred moment.

"I declare you two officially husband and wife," the officiant said. "The groom can kiss the bride."

Gia Bao gently lifted the veil, looked deeply into Ha's eyes before gently kissing her on the lips, amidst the applause and cheers of loved ones witnessing this important moment.

The party afterward took place in a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Mrs. Kim Oanh, Gia Huy, Khanh Vy - who decided to resume their relationship with Gia Huy after many months of thinking and noticed a real change in him, Mr. Tran Dat (Ha's father), Minh Tuan, and many friends and colleagues shared the happiness of the newlywed couple.

During his speech, Gia Huy stood up, raised his glass of wine, his voice filled with emotion. "I want to congratulate my brother and my new sister-in-law. Bao taught me that, no matter how big a mistake we make, there is always a way to redeem ourselves and find ourselves. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness."

When it was her turn, Mrs. Kim Oanh stood up, her voice shaking with emotion. "Looking at you two so happy together today, I feel like all the suffering of the past four years has finally made sense — because it has led us today, to a family more complete than ever."

As the party gradually got late, Ha and Gia Bao stood together under the light of lanterns hanging throughout the garden, watching the guests chatting and laughing around.

"Are you happy?" Gia Bao asked, his hand squeezing her hand tightly.

"Happier than anything I've ever dared to dream of," Ha replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "And the best thing is, this happiness is built on a foundation of truth, not lies or concealment."

Dieu Thao approached, camera still dangling around her neck. "Miss Ha, Mr. Bao, let me take one last photo before the party ends — a photo mark this special day."

The two stood close together, smiling brightly under the warm lantern light, while Dieu Thao clicked the camera, capturing the newlywed couple's moment of complete happiness - a photo, different from the mysterious photo number seventeen that started it all, now contains only light, truth, and sincere love, with no third person hidden behind.

When the last guests had left, the small garden gradually returned to silence, leaving only the shimmering lantern light reflecting on the lotus pond. Ha and Gia Bao sat together on a bench near the lake, enjoying a few rare minutes of peace after a long day filled with emotions.

"I'm still surprised that everything went so smoothly," Ha said, taking off her high heels and gently rubbing her feet that were tired after a long day. "There were no incidents, no one spoiled the atmosphere. I thought there must have been at least some small detail that went wrong."

"Maybe we used up all our bad luck in the previous four years," Gia Bao replied, smiling slightly. "Now only luck remains."

Ha laughed at that statement, leaned her head on his shoulder, watching the moonlight shimmering on the lake surface. "Do you think, if that day I hadn't noticed the anomaly in photo number seventeen, what our lives would be like now?"

Gia Bao pondered for a moment before answering. "I think, perhaps I will always be 'Nam', the car mechanic who lives anonymously, never daring to face his past. And Tran Dat will probably continue to live a life of impunity, and countless others will continue to be victims of similar frauds."

"So, perhaps fate has placed the right person behind the camera lens at the right time," Ha said, smiling and looking up at the starry night sky.

"That's right," Gia Bao agreed, squeezing her hand. "And I'm grateful for that fate every day."

They sat quietly together for a while longer, not needing to say anything else, simply enjoying the peace of the present moment - a peace that both of them had to go through many hardships to find.

"Tomorrow we will depart for our honeymoon," Gia Bao said after a while, breaking the silence. "Are you ready for a week without having to hold a camera?"

"I'm not sure I can handle not taking any pictures for a week," Ha replied, giggling. "But I will try, for you."

"Just promise to take that time to really rest and not worry about work," Gia Bao said, his eyes filled with sincere concern. "I've been working non-stop for the past four years, even before I met you. It's time for me to allow myself to truly relax."

Ha nodded, feeling the warmth in his words. "I promise," she said, then gently kissed his cheek. "Thank you, for always caring about me so much."

The moonlight still quietly illuminates the small garden, witnessing a new chapter officially begin in both of their lives - a chapter no longer dominated by secrets or fears, but filled with hope, trust, and a love that has been forged through the fire of trials to become more durable than ever.
