Chapter 29 — The Photograph Without a Third Person

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Eight months of pregnancy passed with great changes in the lives of Ha and Gia Bao. Their small apartment now has a small corner decorated as a baby room, with warm pale yellow walls and a wooden cradle that Gia Bao himself built, using the craft skills he learned during his four years as an auto mechanic.

"You don't have to do everything yourself," Ha said one evening, when she saw him meticulously sanding every corner of the crib to make sure there were no wood splinters that could hurt the baby. "We can buy it ready-made."

"I want you to know that, even before you were born, you were surrounded by love made by your parents' own hands," Gia Bao replied, without raising his head from what he was doing. "This is my way of showing it."

Ha smiled, sat down next to him, observing her husband's skillful hands at work. She remembered the first time she met him, when he was still "Nam", the quiet car mechanic whose hands were always greasy but contained amazing meticulousness. Now, those hands are creating a cradle for their shared child, a beautiful symbol of the long journey they have gone through together.

Ha's work at Ha Studio is now largely handed over to Dieu Thao and a team of young photographers, while she focuses on completing the final stages of the "Light After Dark" project before taking a break from maternity leave. A photo book synthesizing stories from the project, titled "Those Who Are Not Lonely", is about to be published, with all profits being donated to the fund to support victims of work accidents that Gia Bao and Minh Tuan jointly established.

"This book will be an important milestone," the publisher said in the final meeting before going to press. "We believe it will touch the hearts of many readers, not only because of the beautiful photos, but because of the authentic stories behind them."

Ha felt a deep sense of pride when holding the first proof copy of the book in her hands, flipping through each page, looking back at the nearly two-year journey she spent listening, recording, and telling the stories of countless people who felt their voices were not heard.

"I'm proud of you," Gia Bao said, hugging her from behind when he saw her sitting quietly reviewing a book in the office. "This book will leave a lasting legacy, helping more people than you can imagine."

"We did this together," Ha replied, leaning her head against him. "Without your support, Minh Tuan's, and everyone's support, I could not have completed this project."

One afternoon, as Ha was rearranging the final items for the baby's room, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen, different from the false contractions she had been experiencing in recent weeks.

"Gia Bao!" she called, her voice a little panicked.

He rushed from the office, his face full of worry when he saw her clutching her stomach, breathing rapidly. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"

"I think... I think maybe it's time," Ha said, her voice both nervous and worried. "But it's two weeks earlier than expected."

Gia Bao, even though his heart was full of worry, tried to stay calm to reassure his wife. "It's okay, the doctor said it's normal to give birth a little early. I'll take you to the hospital right now."

On the way to the hospital, Gia Bao drove while constantly asking about Ha's condition, trying to keep her calm amid the increasingly intense pain. "Are you okay? How long will it be between contractions?"

"About every five minutes," Ha replied, biting her lip to endure the pain. "Can you drive faster?"

"I'm trying my best while still ensuring safety," Gia Bao replied, even though inside he was equally panicked, he just tried not to show it so as not to make Ha worry more.

At the hospital, everything happened faster than they imagined. After several painful but hopeful hours, finally, the first cry of a tiny life rang out in the delivery room, marking the birth of a new member of the family.

"It's a girl," the doctor announced, placing the tiny, red baby on Ha's chest. "A perfectly healthy little girl."

Ha looked down at her daughter's small face, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks, mixed with drops of sweat after an arduous labor. "You're born," she whispered, her voice choked with extreme emotion.

Gia Bao stood next to him, his hand shaking when he first touched his daughter's tiny hand. He couldn't hold back his tears of happiness, an intense emotion he had never experienced in his entire life.

"The baby is born," he repeated Ha's words, his voice trembling. "Our daughter has been born."

"Have you thought of a name for your baby yet?" Ha asked, looking up at her husband with eyes full of love.

Gia Bao thought for a moment, then smiled, a name had appeared in his mind for a long time, waiting for this moment to be said. "Phan Minh Anh," he said. "Light — because you are the light that has led our whole family through all the darkness to reach today."

Ha smiled and nodded in agreement immediately, feeling the deep meaning in that name. "Minh Anh," she repeated, looking down at the little face sleeping in her arms. "Welcome to this world, baby."

Outside the delivery room window, the late afternoon sunlight shines into the room, like a warm welcome to the newest member of the family — a family built from the fragments of a painful past, now more complete than ever.

News of Minh Anh's birth quickly spread to all her loved ones. Mrs. Kim Oanh was the first person at the hospital, less than an hour after receiving the call from Gia Bao, her hands trembled when she held her granddaughter for the first time.

"My grandchild is so beautiful," she whispered, tears of happiness flowing endlessly as she looked down at her little sleeping face. "You resemble your mother in your eyes, but this chin is truly your father's."

"I think so too," Gia Bao replied, standing next to his mother with a smile that couldn't be hidden on his lips. "Mom, do you want to stay and help us take care of Minh Anh in the first days?"

"Of course," Ms. Kim Oanh replied immediately, without any hesitation. "I've been waiting for this opportunity for a long time."

Gia Huy and Khanh Vy also visited that evening, bringing a gift basket full of clothes and small toys for the baby. "It's Uncle Huy," Gia Huy said, gently holding his niece's tiny hand, his voice filled with emotion. "I promise to always protect you, just like how your father always protected me."

Khanh Vy stood next to her, smiling at that warm scene. "I never thought I would witness this moment," she told Ha. "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this family, even if in an indirect way."

Mr. Tran Dat, Ha's biological father, also rushed to the hospital as soon as he heard the news, carrying a large bouquet of flowers and undisguised proud eyes. "I've become a grandfather," he said, his voice shaking with emotion as he held his grandson for the first time. "This is one of the happiest days of my life, daughter."

Dieu Thao, even though she was busy managing the studio, still took the opportunity to stop by in the evening, bringing her familiar camera. "Miss Ha, please allow me to take the first few photos of Minh Anh," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "These will be the most meaningful photos I've ever had the opportunity to take."

Ha nodded in agreement, watching Dieu Thao carefully capture every precious moment - Minh Anh sleeping in her mother's arms, her tiny hand holding her father's finger tightly, the whole family gathered around the hospital bed, all filled with love.

Three days later, when Ha and Minh Anh were discharged from the hospital, the whole family returned together to the small apartment that had been carefully prepared many months ago. Gia Bao carried his daughter into her private room, gently placed her in the wooden cradle that he had built himself, an indescribable feeling of pride spread throughout his body.

"Welcome home," he whispered, looking at his daughter who was squirming slightly in her sleep. "This is a house built with our love for you, my child."

Ha stood next to him, put her arm around her husband's waist, and they both looked at their little daughter sleeping in the cradle. "We really did it," she said softly, her voice filled with emotion. "From a chance moment with photo number seventeen, today — a complete, happy family."

"And the journey still continues," Gia Bao replied, lightly kissing his wife's forehead. "Now, we have one more reason to keep building a better world — for our daughters, and for all the other children who deserve to grow up in a fairer, safer world."

That night, when Minh Anh fell into a deep sleep, Ha and Gia Bao sat together in the living room, reviewing the entire journey that had brought them today - from a chance meeting at a car repair shop, through many ups and downs and dangers, to a perfect family home with children's cries echoing throughout the house.

"I think, if I could turn back time, I would still choose this path, even though I knew all the difficulties I would have to face," Ha said, leaning her head on her husband's shoulder.

"Me too," Gia Bao replied, squeezing her hand. "Because in the end, that path led us here — to a family, a love, and a life more meaningful than anything I could have ever dreamed of."
