Chapter 59 — The Ship That Never Looks Back

Distant Siren

A distant but clear sound rang through the Silent Tunnel, a short whistle, repeated three times, causing all activity in the large containment chamber to stop immediately. Khe Lam, who was helping pack up her belongings for the return journey, raised her head, immediately noticing the change in the air around her — everyone stopped, listening, their faces changing to a heightened alertness that had been practiced over the years.

"Alarm signal." Ax said, appearing right next to them, his voice urgent but not panicked, a calmness that came from having faced this situation many times before. "The guard at the entrance spotted a patrol moving closer than usual, closer than any time in months."

Pham Ngoc Suong appeared soon after, giving quick instructions, her voice carrying a sharp authority that was different from the warm calmness she showed when talking to Khe Lam. "Activate emergency dispersal procedures. Group one to the east backup area, group two to the west exit. Children go first, the elderly go in the middle, the strongest go last to block the rear if necessary."

The entire community moved with surprising coordination, without the chaos that Khe Lam expected from such an emergency, but an order that had been carefully rehearsed through countless drills, each person knowing their exact role, each move with a clear purpose.

"You guys have to get out of here now." Pham Ngoc Suong said, turning to Khe Lam, Bach Van, and Bui Dac Sinh, her voice urgent. "If the Guardians find traces of our community, and discover more traces of you here, the consequences will be far more serious than any of us can bear."

Khe Lam turned around to find Pham Ngoc Suong in the midst of that orderly chaos, holding the old woman's hand one last time. "Thank you, ma'am, for everything." She said, her voice choked with both emotion and worry. "I will never forget what you told me."

"Let's go find your mother." Pham Ngoc Suong said, squeezing her hand one last time before letting go. "And if you find her, tell her that Ngoc Suong still remembers, still keeping her old promise to take care of those she left behind."

"We'll go now." Khe Lam said, even though her heart was filled with worry for the people who had just opened their hearts to receive her. "But what about everyone here?"

"We've survived this many times before." Pham Ngoc Suong replied, a firm determination in her voice. "We have many escape routes, many backup areas prepared for exactly this situation. Don't worry about us, child. Take care of yourselves, and find your way back safely."

Bui Dac Sinh led the way, taking them back the way they came, now moving at a much faster pace than their previous slow exploration, each clearly aware of the danger hanging over their backs. The siren continued to sound, now accompanied by another distant noise — maybe the footsteps of a large patrol, maybe just the echo of their own fear amplifying every sound in this dark hallway space.

As they approached the rotten metal floor they had passed on their way, Khe Lam stopped for a moment, listening more closely. "There's someone behind us." She whispered, a cold certainty in her voice.

Bach Van turned to look, his flashlight scanning the dark hallway behind him, seeing nothing clearly but also feeling a vague presence, perhaps just the echo of their own footsteps, perhaps something else.

"Go on." Bui Dac Sinh gave the order, his voice resolute. "We don't have time to verify, only time to move as fast as possible."

They crossed the dangerous floor at a much faster speed than the first time, accepting a higher level of risk because of the urgency of the situation, Khe Lam's heart pounding every time she felt the metal floor vibrate slightly under her feet. They continued rushing through the dark corridors, past the first sealed door Bui Dac Sinh had opened with the old key, until they finally reached the familiar exit leading to the official Bottom Deck area.

Standing outside the sealed door, panting, the three of them stopped for a moment to catch their breath, listening for any signs of pursuit. There was nothing, just the familiar silence of this abandoned area.

"We're safe." Bach Van said, although his voice was still shaking because the adrenaline had not yet dissipated.

"Safe, but I don't know if Silent Tunnel is safe or not." Khe Lam said, nervously looking back at the sealed door they had just passed, thinking of Pham Ngoc Suong, of Riu, of the baby named Tro, of all the people who had just opened their hearts to welcome her into a part of history they had carefully protected for many years.

Bui Dac Sinh placed his hand on both young people's shoulders, his voice was calm but full of understanding. "They've survived worse than this, child. Believe me, a community that has survived a hundred and fifty years of constant pursuit has not been through luck, but through careful preparation for precisely such moments as these."

They continued their return journey, now going more slowly to avoid making unnecessary noise in the main Bottom Deck area, where the possibility of encountering another patrol still existed. Bui Dac Sinh led the way through a detour he rarely used, staying away from the Old Garden area that had almost become a trap for them just a few days ago, choosing a longer but safer route along the less frequented secondary maintenance corridors.

When they finally saw the familiar lights of the Roots residential area in the distance, a strange feeling of relief and disappointment filled Khe Lam—relief to have returned safely, disappointment to leave a world that had just opened before her eyes, a world where she felt closer to her mother than at any other moment in her twenty years of life.

"I'll never look at Bottom Deck the same way again." She said, as they stopped to rest one last time before parting ways to return to their respective homes. "For so many years, I thought I knew every nook and cranny of this place. Now I realize, I've only seen a thin shell of a much larger world, hidden right under my feet."

She contemplated all that had happened on this short but life-changing trip—the existence of the Silent Tunnel, the story of her mother's early years, the swirling markings on the valve, and now, the new warning that increased patrols from Directive Twelve were threatening to spread to even the most remote areas she had thought were perfectly safe.

"The Root Squeeze doesn't just affect us." She said, a heavy new realization forming in her mind. "It is spreading, threatening even those who have lived in hiding for generations, those who have never even known of Directive Twelve's existence or the true reason behind it."

“It just makes me even more convinced that we have to keep going.” Bach Van said, holding her hand tightly. "For every day the truth remains buried, the costs continue to spread farther and deeper, affecting more people than any of us ever imagined."

Bui Dac Sinh, walking a short distance behind them, spoke up, his voice thoughtful as if summing up the entire journey. "I have lived long enough to witness many cycles of fear and silence on this ship. But I have never seen a generation that dared to go as far as you two, not only to seek the truth for themselves, but also to dare to step into its most hidden corners, to face its consequences directly with their own eyes, instead of just hearing about it."

"Do you think we're doing it right?" Khe Lam asked, needing confirmation from the person who had accompanied her the longest on this journey.

"I don't think there's a completely right path in this situation, little girl." Bui Dac Sinh replied, honestly as always. "There are only paths that are less wrong than others. But I believe, between continuing to stay silent and courageously facing the truth, no matter how painful, the path you are choosing is the only path that brings real hope for the future, not only for your family, but for all children like Tro, who deserve to live without having to hide their identities."

Those words stayed in Khe Lam's heart for the rest of the trip, a confirmation she needed to hear more than she realized, giving her strength before they parted ways at the familiar crossroads leading to separate lives that were now forever changed by what they had just experienced together.
