Chapter 4
Chapter 4 — There Are Positions You Can Only Hold For Yourself
These four words are even heavier than the previous sentence of not getting engaged. A trace of panic finally appeared in Tran Nhien's eyes. He lowered his voice, as if forcing himself to calm down.
“Giang Nguyet, now you come down here, I can see that you were just temporarily angry.”
"The ring hasn't been given yet, the ceremony hasn't ended yet, don't tear the dignity of both families apart."
I looked at his outstretched hand. That hand is long, clean, and has held my hand on many roads. But now I just want to stay away.
“Face is not torn by me.”
“But from the moment Manh Dinh sat down, he was trampled on by you guys.”
Tran Nhien's face darkened. He suddenly reached out and grabbed the microphone in my hand. The presenter panicked and took half a step back. I leaned over to the side. A short hissing sound rang out from the microphone. Right at that moment, a calm voice suddenly came from the banquet hall door.
“Who dares to touch my daughter?”
That voice wasn't too loud, but it was like a blade cutting straight through the chaotic scene. I turned my head to look back. My father was standing at the entrance to the banquet hall, behind him were my mother and his entire family. Recently they were arranged in a private room on the other side to welcome relatives from far away, so they didn't have time to sit at the main table from the beginning. At this time, my mother's face was pale, but her eyes were red. My father is a peaceful person and rarely gets angry in front of others. However, his eyes were now dark and scary. He walked in step by step, and the guests he passed voluntarily made way. Tran Nhien's outstretched hand suddenly stiffened in mid-air. He quickly retracted his hand, trying to force a forced smile.
“Uncle, aunt, Giang Nguyet is just having a little misunderstanding.”
“I was about to advise her to come down.”
My father paid no attention to him. He raised his head to look at me, his voice softened.
“Nguyet Nguyet, have you thought carefully?”
My fingers holding the microphone were slightly numb. Saying annulment in front of so many people doesn't mean I'm not afraid. I'm afraid my parents will lose face. Afraid of gossip from relatives. I'm afraid everyone will say I'm impulsive. But when I saw the pain in my mother's eyes, the last bit of fluctuation in my heart suddenly completely subsided.
“I've thought about it carefully.”
“Dad, Mom, I'm sorry.”
“This engagement party, I don't want to continue anymore.”
My mother's tears immediately fell. She didn't blame me at all, just nodded slightly.
“I don't want to get engaged anymore, so we won't get engaged.”
Those words made my nose sting. Ms. Vuong Le's face completely changed. She immediately walked in front of my mother, her voice carrying some bitterness that she tried to suppress.
"The in-laws, the child is angry, are the parents also joining in the chaos?"
"Today so many friends and relatives have come, hotels have been booked, and congratulatory money has been received."
"He just said that he won't be engaged anymore, does he want everyone to lose face with him?"
My mother wiped her tears and raised her head to look at her.
“Mrs. Wang, is face important, or is my daughter important?”
Ms. Vuong Le was stunned. My mother continued talking.
“In the engagement party, the bride's position was left to someone else.”
“The groom protects others.”
“Mother-in-law sauce Lai also stands on the side of others.”
"My daughter stood on stage and said she was no longer engaged. The first thing she cared about was not why she had to suffer, but whether your family would lose face or not."
"A door like that, we in the Giang family can't reach it."
Below, a series of soft inhales sounded. Some of my relatives also stood up. My uncle re-buttoned his vest and coldly stared at Tran Nhien.
“Did you intend to snatch the microphone just now?”
Tran Nhien's face was extremely ugly.
“You, you misunderstood, I just want her to come down first.”
“Saying such words in front of everyone is not good for her reputation.”
My dad finally looked over at him.
“If you really cared about his reputation, you wouldn't have let him suffer like that at your own engagement party.”
Tran Nhien was silent for a moment. His eyes crossed the crowd and fell on me, his tone softened a bit.
“Giang Nguyet, I admit I didn't handle it well just now.”
"But Tieu Dinh grew up in my house from a young age. Her health is not good and she has a shy personality."
“She's late today, she's already very stressed.”
“I just want to take care of her a little.”
“Why do you have to think about things in such a harsh way?”
Hearing this, Manh Dinh's tears fell again. She left her seat and slowly walked to Tran Nhien's side.
“Brother Nhien, stop talking.”
“It's all my fault.”
"It's okay if my sister-in-law hates me, I won't appear in front of you two anymore."
After speaking, she turned around and bowed slightly to me.
