Chapter 5
Chapter 5 — There Are Positions You Can Only Hold For Yourself
“Sister-in-law, I'm sorry.”
“I didn't know that position was so important to you.”
This statement is so cleverly said. Didn't know that position was important. Don't know where the bride should sit at the engagement party. I don't know how inappropriate it is to hold someone else's fiance's arm. She stuffed all the insults into an unknown sentence, then gently pushed it away, immediately wanting to turn me into an aggressive bully. I looked at her.
“Manh Dinh, do you really not know?”
She raised her teary eyes.
“I really don't know.”
"I'm just used to sitting next to Nhien."
I nodded.
“So your habits are truly ingrained.”
"So deep that the seat nameplate that the hotel arranged initially had my name on it, but then it was changed to your name."
Manh Dinh's expression stiffened for a moment. Tran Nhien immediately frowned. Ms. Vuong Le quickly spoke up.
“Name tags or no name tags at all, the hotel is busy so it's normal for mistakes to happen.”
I don't look at her. I turned my head to look at the banquet hall manager who was standing nearby with a flustered look on his face.
“Manager, please come here for a moment.”
The manager's forehead was covered in sweat. He looked at Tran Nhien, then at Mrs. Vuong Le, still not daring to step forward. My father spoke coldly.
"Half of the deposit for today's location is paid by us, the Giang family."
“We have the right to ask for clarity.”
At this point, the manager gritted his teeth and walked to the front of the stage. I turned the microphone towards him.
“Please tell everyone, who arranged the position at the main table initially, and then who requested the change.”
The manager gulped.
“Miss Giang, can you look into this or should we talk privately?”
I laughed.
“Just now they forced me to understand things in front of everyone.”
“Now I also want to understand clearly in front of everyone.”
The banquet hall once again fell silent. The manager bowed his head and turned the tablet over in his hand, his finger gliding twice across the screen. Tran Nhien suddenly shouted in a serious voice. Those two words made everyone look at him simultaneously. It also made the last bit of doubt in my heart have an answer. After shouting, Tran Nhien realized that his reaction was somewhat extreme. He quickly lowered his voice and turned to my parents.
“Uncle, aunt, today has been chaotic enough.”
“The matter of the seating arrangement is just a small matter, there is no need to bring it up.”
"Tieu Dinh is my younger sister, everyone knows this."
"If you really keep digging up every story, in the end the only person who will lose face will be Nguyet Nguyet."
My father looked at him.
“You don't need to worry about my daughter losing face.”
"Today he stood on stage and knew more clearly what he was doing than anyone in the Tran family."
My mother also walked close to the stage. She raised her head to look at me and spoke softly.
“Nguyet Nguyet, just say whatever you want.”
“My parents are here.”
My throat felt like something was stuck. I nodded slightly, squeezing the microphone in my hand once more. The manager was sandwiched between the two sides, his face pale. In the end he still gave me the tablet.
"Miss Giang, the original seating chart was jointly confirmed by you and Mr. Tran."
“The two positions in the middle of the main table belong to you and Mr. Tran respectively.”
“But at eleven forty-two this afternoon, It was Mr. Tran who asked us to change seats.”
“He said Ms. Manh would sit next to him.”
“And specifically told us not to notify you.”
When those words were transmitted through the microphone, the entire banquet hall seemed to receive a strong blow. The people who were still trying to explain for Tran Nhien all changed their faces. If it's just a temporary concession, it can still be said to be an unexpected situation. But the seats were changed at noon, and they deliberately did not notify me. Then it's no longer a misunderstanding. It was pre-arranged. I looked at Tran Nhien.
“So you've known for a long time.”
“I knew she would sit there.”
“You know I will be put aside.”
“You also know why when I stood next to the table I refused to sit down.”
Tran Nhien's face was sometimes blue, sometimes white. He opened his mouth, but for a moment he couldn't say a word. Manh Dinh reacted faster than him. She cried and shook her head.
“It has nothing to do with Mr. Nhien.”
"This morning I told him that I was a little afraid of crowded places and wanted to sit next to someone I know."
“I didn't expect my sister-in-law to care so much about this matter.”
“If I knew, I definitely wouldn't agree.”
I watched tears roll down her face. Even the angle when crying looked like it had been practiced before.
“She is afraid of crowded places.”
I repeat slowly.
“So she wore a white dress that stood out even more than the bride, then took his arm and walked in in front of dozens of guests.”
“So you can coo in front of everyone, you can give him food, you can let him comfort you.”
“What you're afraid of is just not being able to sit next to him, right?”
The self-pity on Manh Dinh's face was almost unbearable. Ms. Vuong Le immediately blocked her face.
“Giang Nguyet, don't be too harsh.”
"Tieu Dinh's health is not good, her psychology is also very sensitive."
"He has been close to Nhien Nhien since he was young. Our family has always lived like that for many years."
“If you want to marry into the Tran family, you must learn to accept our family's way of living together.”
I smiled slightly.
“Now I won't get married anymore.”
“The way your family lives together, leave it to someone who can accept it.”
Ms. Vuong Le's throat was blocked and she didn't know what to say. Finally, Tran Nhien also spoke.
“Giang Nguyet, what do you want?”
“I said, I can apologize to you.”
"The seat was changed by me. I admit that I didn't think carefully."
“But now you expose everything in front of everyone like this, do you want to force me and my mother to kneel down and apologize to you?”
He spoke very harshly on purpose. It's like I'm the one who's pushing you too hard. I looked at him. My heart suddenly no longer hurt like before.
“I don't need you to kneel down.”
“I just need you to admit something.”
Tran Nhien stared at me.
