Chapter 10
Chapter 10 — Light Streaks Off The Runway
The rain came at 4:18 p.m., not heavy but persistent. It covered the road surface with a thin layer of gloss, enough to make the lights reflect downwards but not enough for people to call it unusual weather.
Nghi stood in the technical room, looking at the power switching clock. The system is using grid power. Edge light W-3 lights up fine. Uyen placed the camera in three positions. Spread to the ditch to check the water level. Duy keeps in touch with the tower. Han was at the station, waiting to see if the team would ask to stop or not.
Tong walked in. “We have two hours left before ground training.”
“There are no flights,” Nghi said.
"There's a plane on the apron. They need to test the engines, not take off."
“We still have to control the area.”
"I know."
“Rain changes conditions.”
“I know too.”
Nghi looked at him. “So don't talk like we're waiting for a bug to appear on schedule.”
Tong did not answer. He looked at the control panel. Every green vein.
At 4:32 p.m., the water level in the ditch increased by seven centimeters. The railing reports that box number 17 is not flooded yet, but the ground around the north side is soft. Uyen took photos and recorded the conditions. At 4:45 p.m., Han called to say the training trip might be postponed.
“The company wants to try it before dark,” she said.
“Do not use lights without permission.”
“I'm telling them to back down, not still try.”
"Thank."
“I haven't protected you yet,” Han said. “I'm keeping the crew from becoming living data.”
Doubt I understand. A person sitting in the cockpit is not a measuring device. It is not possible to put them through an unknown system and then take the reaction as the result.
At 17:02, the backup generator was started to test the load. Uyen stood in front of the photo screen. Nghi signaled to begin. Duy confirmed that the tower was not approached. Sign the transfer inspection form.
Relay closed.
The light turns off for a short beat, then turns back on. The last two lights W-3 light up late. The last four points appear as a clear step, then the streak of light joins the line. On the board, the current increases then stabilizes. No warning.
Uyen said: "I have a photo."
Looking at the time. 17 hours 03 minutes 11 seconds. She asked to repeat.
Second time, different delay. One light on the front, three lights on the back. The deviation streak lasts longer.
Tong asked: "Could it be because the generator stabilizes the load?"
“Maybe. But the geometry error is more obvious when switching sources.”
“The system is still on level.”
“Light level is not location.”
"What do you want me to do? Turn off the transmitter?"
"Not yet. Keep it as it is for measurement."
Tong looked at her. “If the transmitter affects the system, she is asking for a fault hold.”
“If we turn it off, we lose the conditions to reappear.”
“And if there is a vehicle or plane that needs power?”
“No access.”
Report from the apron: an employee wants to take the car to area W-3 to pick up tools. Nghi asked to wait. Kha asked if it could be opened in three minutes.
“No,” Nghi said.
“Just three minutes.”
“One pass through can cause changes and influence measurements.”
Kha passed it on. The grumbling sound on the other side of the walkie-talkie echoed softly. Duy at the tower heard it and asked: "Do we need to record the reaction?"
“Write down the time and the reporter,” Nghi replied.
Tong turned around. “There is no need to turn every unpleasant word into an incident.”
“No. Just need to know if the inspection area is maintained.”
Tong walked out. A minute later he called the apron himself, asking to wait. No one said he changed his mind because of Nghi. He doesn't need to explain.
At 6 p.m., the rain became heavier. Han sent weather radar photos; A band of low clouds is sliding in from the sea, possibly lasting well into the night. The water barrier has reached the bottom of the gearbox 17.
“Stop checking in the yard,” Nghi said.
Uyen looked at her. “But we don't have enough cycles yet.”
“The safety of people entering the inspection area is more important than one more cycle.”
Nghi called Tong, requesting to limit exploitation in the western area and temporarily suspend human inspection. Tong asked: "Do we have to close the runway?"
“For the tryout, yes.”
“As for the route opening schedule?”
“I have not concluded yet, but the current data do not allow confirmation.”
“I need a clear sentence.”
Nghi opened the book. "The lighting system itself has not lost its light-emitting function. However, under switching and rainy conditions, the observation geometry is unstable. The current results are not recommended to confirm night operations."
Be quiet longer than usual. “I will write it down.”
Han called later. “I listened to Tong for two days.”
“He gave the team two more days to verify.”
“Is two days enough to fix it?”
"Not enough to fix. Maybe enough to prove it needs fixing."
“Do you understand what those two days put the company in?”
"Have."
“I don't want to lose my connection.”
“Neither do I.”
“So don't turn safety into a moral statement and let everyone else bear the brunt.”
Doubt. Han is right. Technicians often say “stop” as if the only thing left after that is repair. But people who lose shifts, lose contracts, or lose flights don't always sit in the technical room.
“Do you want me to suggest an operating plan?” Nghi asked.
“I want you to come up with all the options, not just the easy ones.”
The two agreed to meet the next morning.
At 7:26 p.m., a flash of lightning in the distance lit up the airport white for a second. When the maintenance light turned back on, one bulb on the west side did not light up. The control panel shows a drop in current, then returns to green after a few seconds. Do not touch the button. Uyen marked the time. Duy reported that the tower had no planes.
Lan called from outside: "The water has entered the ditch."
Nghi walked to the door but did not come out. Below, the lights reflected on the water's surface formed a second row of amber, shaking in ripples. This time she didn't need to change the angle to see the streak of light beyond the runway.
Tong stood next to her. “Beautiful,” he said, very softly.
“Beauty is not a criterion.”
"I know."
He returned to the room and wrote on the slip himself: "Do not use test data in rainy conditions to confirm night exploitation."
Nghi looked at his signature. It didn't resolve for eight years. But at least this time a temporary decision has a start.
Two days of verification have opened. Out there, the runway is wet, the lights are still running, and no one can say the error was just a figment of one's imagination.
After Tong signed the test suspension form, he did not leave the technical room immediately. He took a chair and sat next to Uyen to review the two source transfer cycles. In the first cycle, the deflected light streak appears for a short period of time. In cycle two, one light is slower. The two are not identical.
“If it's not the same, is it not trustworthy?” Tong asked.
Uyen replied: "No. It shows that the system does not repeat the way we expect. To conclude, we must know different conditions."
Tong looked at her. “You say it like Nghi.”
“I listen to her a lot.”
“You should also know when not to listen.”
Uyen turned around. “What do you want me to do?”
“I want you to ask yourself the next question.”
Uyen looked at the board. “Rain conditions, heat, load, power transfer time, water around the box, camera angle.”
Tong nodded. "Write it all down. If people ask later why it hasn't been opened, they have to see the list what is missing.”
Listen but do not interfere. Tong is transitioning from someone who asks for a short sentence to someone who helps others create questions.
Han sent the company's impact board. The opening trip has an expected 96 passengers, 3.2 tons of frozen goods, two transfer vehicles and a contract to bring warehouse staff to the night shift. She does not use numbers to exert pressure. She placed them next to the transfer option.
Calculate replacement vehicle. Part of the goods can be shipped by road first, but frozen shrimp requires time for temperature control. If the time exceeds, the warehouse will bear the loss. Han asked the company to support cold vehicles, but only for the first three days.
“Closing longer, we have to renegotiate,” she said.
Tong replied: "I know."
“I don't want people to think I'm pushing.”
“You're talking about conditions. That's your job.”
Lan sent a photo of the water level. The rain has stopped, but pile number two is leaning a little more. Phuc Lam said you should not remove the box when the foundation is not hard enough. Nghi noted the decision to wait.
An employee asked in the group chat why a plane was not used during the day to take photos from above. Han explained that the observation equipment is sufficient for the current sequence; Real aircraft should not be used as test equipment without determining the conditions.
The questioner replied: "I don't know the profession so I asked."
Han: “If you ask the right question, it will help your profession.”
When I read it, I found that sentence to be completely different from the way questions are often pushed out.
At 10 p.m., Tong received a notice from the province: permission to temporarily hold the route opening schedule for another 48 hours, but not sell tickets until there is a report. They want the team to determine a plan to replace the circuit tomorrow.
“They gave us time,” Uyen said.
Nghi replied: “They gave me a deadline. Not infinite time.”
For the next two days, everyone divided shifts. Duy checked the log until early morning and slept right in the bedroom. Kha learns how to read image matrices, even if he only needs to know which images have cars or auxiliary lights. Orchid hit the pile for control. Abyss calls for old people. Tong went through the departments to ask for shift schedules. Han kept the line with the company.
Nghi started to feel tired in his neck and shoulders. Uyen reminded her to eat. Nghi asked the apprentice where he got the right to remind.
“From the roster. I'm the one in charge, but I'm not the one who doesn't need to eat."
Doubt listens. She ate her cold lunch box at the table, not turning skipping meals into a sign of devotion.
On the morning of the second day, the stand-alone device recorded a new phenomenon: when the W-3 lamp turned on after the backup power, the current was stable but one connector heated up faster. Not exceeding the threshold, but not like other branches. The technician recommended removing the connector for inspection.
I wonder if the foundation is safe. Lan answered no. They put up a roof, waited for the water to recede further, then opened it under lockdown conditions.
Tong asked: "If we wait any longer, 48 hours will be over."
“It's better to expire with clear data than to use hasty data to open.”
Tong looked at her and said: "I will ask for an extension."
“Don't ask for unfinished technical sentences. Please make a list of things that can be completed and things that cannot be done."
He called the province.
Han heard it and asked Nghi: "Do you realize that you have become the person writing the schedule for the whole airport?"
“I only wrote the conditions.”
“Conditions are often what determine the calendar.”
Do not deny it.
Two days of testing ended without a single "pass". It has photo matrices, red maps, water level measurements, radio logs, power logs and impact lists. The streak of light on the runway has stopped being a strange image. It becomes a structured question, Big enough to force the decision maker to look at both the technology and the people waiting for the flight schedule.
