Chapter 18
Chapter 18 — Light Streaks Off The Runway
The next morning, the employee break room had an additional whiteboard. There was no flight schedule written on it. It writes questions from people affected by the airport's overnight closure.
Who pays for transit?
What time before cold storage delivery?
Which shift do night shift employees change to?
Where can people cancel their tickets and get their money back?
If the circuit is repaired in seven days, who confirms reopening?
If it hasn't been fixed yet, who gives notice on the fourteenth day?
Tong stood in front of the board and read it all. He did not use the word “temporary damage”. A warehouse employee asked bluntly: "I can take two shifts per week. What do you call that?"
“The impact part requires a plan,” Tong replied.
“Will the plan pay my rent?”
"Insufficient."
“So you know.”
Tong doesn't say "be understanding". He wrote the questions on the board. Han called from the other end, announcing that the airline had transferred the passenger to the morning flight and supported the bus difference. The cold storage is assigned a bus schedule via the north road. Kha said the north road can only be used if the vehicle is under a certain load.
Lan added a note: "If it rains again, check the ditch again before driving."
Workers are not angry. But the anger had a place to go, not just hitting Nghi in the hallway.
Nghi passed through the station and heard a passenger ask the ticket counter why the evening flight was changed. The counter staff gives an approved notice, without mentioning the weather if the cause is technical. An old man said he had to leave the next morning to be examined in the province. The staff called the support department to find the car.
Closing the airport does not turn into a beautiful story. It leaves people having to travel further, pay extra fees, change shifts and be angry at a decision they were not a part of. Nghi sees that more clearly than anyone in the technical department.
Looking for her at the end of the station. He held an old clipboard.
“I submitted a request to replace the circuit since my second year,” he said.
“I see.”
“I sent back a signed copy.”
"Why?"
"Because this morning someone called me a cover-up. I don't want to use the records to prove I'm good. I want it to show that I knew, asked, and still signed the extension."
Do not know whether to thank or blame. “Who did you tell the proposal was suspended?”
"I told the department head. I think they kept talking."
“Thinking is not handing over.”
"I know."
“You could have sent it directly to Tong when he accepted the job.”
“I called once.”
“An unrecorded call.”
Vuc nodded. "Correct."
Nghi looked at him. “I don't want you to be the only one to admit your mistakes so that everyone else feels relieved.”
“I don't want to either.”
“Then write down the whole string.”
Vuc handed over the folder. “Write it down.”
The staff meeting that afternoon turned heated. One person said Nghi "just saw the lights and then the whole airport closed down". Another person said that if they don't pay, they will be questioned when something happens. Uyen sat at the table, writing down opinions, but her face turned red when she heard people call her "that little girl who's too busy learning how to work."
Nghi stood up. "Yes, I was the one who suggested stopping night mining. But the decision was signed by the General after receiving data from many departments. It was not one person who looked at the lights and then closed the yard himself."
The other person asked: "So will you accept it if I lose my shift?"
"I'm responsible for the technical part. I can't pay the airport myself. But I won't say your lost shift is insignificant."
“Does that help?”
“If you don't write it down, it certainly won't help.”
Kha set the table car up plan. "Cold storage doesn't just take shifts. Transfer vehicles also have limits. I have clearly written down which routes can be used and which cannot. If you want, check with me."
Lan added: “Don't convert a runway risk into a dirt road risk.”
The meeting did not have a conclusion that made everyone happy. It ends up with six takers: shift support, ticket notification, transfer vehicle, northbound check, repair schedule and feedback channel.
Tong stayed last. He looked at Nghi. “You can rest for a few hours.”
“I don't need it yet.”
“You don't have to stand at every meeting.”
“If you don't stand, people will say that technology doesn't care about the consequences.”
“You're thinking too much about what other people say.”
Nghi replied: "Because this time I understand what they said was not completely wrong."
Tong leaned against the board. "I thought keeping the airport open was the way to protect workers. Only today I see that maybe trying to keep the schedule puts them at risk without knowing it."
“You can say that at the provincial meeting.”
"I will."
Vuc sent the appendix at night. There was a page with only the date and the people he had called. Some people remember. Some don't. A person has passed away and can't ask anymore. Abyss clearly states the gap, not filled with “maybe”.
When I read it, I feel pain in a different way. A teacher does not need to be turned into a villain for what he does to be serious.
Han called and said the crew of the night flight had been informed about the diversion. “They asked why,” she said. “I correctly used the phrase ‘edgelight and power conditions not fully confirmed’.”
“How did they react?”
“They said thank you for knowing in advance.”
Nghi sat down on the chair. She did not see victory. Just saw the right sentence went to the right person.
The first night the airport was closed, the boundary lights were not on. On a dark background, the people on duty still check the daytime areas. Uyen stayed in the technical room with Nghi, making a list of changes that needed to be included in the new map.
“Sister,” Uyen said, “if I fix it later, do I have to keep the old records?”
"Have."
“Even bad records?”
"Especially bad records. If you just keep a clean copy, the next class will think the system has never gone wrong."
Outside, box number 17 lies under wet grass. On the table, Vuc's old proposal is next to Tong's decision to close the yard. Eight years are separated by two signatures, but the consequences are connected.
The airport has stopped overnight flights. Now they must learn how to correct a decision without pretending it was never signed.
Three days later, the staff meeting included a person from the province and a company representative. Tong put the night's minutes on the table without showing beautiful photos. He read the impact part before the technical part: number of shifts changed, number of transit vehicles, goods that had to be rescheduled, and passengers supported.
An employee asked: "If you know that closing causes such damage, why do you still close it?"
Tong replied: "Because the light conditions have not been confirmed. The two things are not mutually exclusive."
“Sounds like what someone with a steady salary says.”
Tong did not react immediately. "I do not deny that people whose shifts are reduced suffer more. Therefore, the support plan must have money and a name, not just the words 'will consider'."
Han explained that the company had supported two refrigerated cars and changed tickets. She also made it clear that the airline cannot keep the flight schedule indefinitely. Passengers are informed of the technical cause and are not pushed into weather rumors.
A warehouse employee said: "I like to tell the truth, but the support money hasn't arrived yet."
Han wrote down the name, date and disbursement department. Please update within 24 hours.
Suspected that the meeting did not make anyone happy. It just makes people feel upset.
In the technical room, the repair team disassembles gearbox 17. The hot connector is packaged, circuit, condition, and removal time are recorded. Vuc stood outside the fence, watching the young workers work.
One person asked him: "Do you have any advice?"
Vuc replied: "Don't use memory as a map. If you remember, write it down as memory and find the number."
The worker nodded, not knowing if those were words he had taught Nghi or a lesson he had just learned.
Uyen gave Nghi an update. She added the columns “impact if delayed,” “person to notify,” and “retest date.” Nghi asked why these two columns were in the technical file.
“Because if the technology doesn't record, others will think there are no consequences.”
"Good."
Tong went in and told the province to ask who was responsible for the plane's diversion. Nghi intended to answer, "Tong signed," but Tong said to himself:
"I am the one who signed the operating decision. Duy is responsible for tower information. Han is responsible for company coordination. Nghi is responsible for technical confirmation within the data scope. No one is responsible for the other person's part."
Nghi looked at him. “You would say that in the report?”
“Told.”
That's how to separate responsibility from bug pushing.
Kha met a former employee who told him "don't record the signal". That person apologized, saying that day they were afraid of being seen as dragging their shifts. Kha did not answer for the organization. He asked that person if he wanted to write an explanation.
“Will there be a fine?”
"I don't know. But if you don't write it down, only the word will remain."
The other person wrote. The record doesn't delete the old action, but gives it a name and context.
Lan and Uyen made a plan to measure after replacement. They don't just measure lights; They measure landmarks, water levels, vehicle lines and foundation stability. Lan said: "If you only measure the lights, you'll have to call me again next year."
Uyen replied: "I will create instructions."
"Instructions must have photos. People who don't go to the scene cannot read the sentence 'soft background'."
Uyen photographed how the bamboo stick sunk, how to set a marker, and how to write ink. She did not turn Lan into a legendary figure; She turned her experience into something the next class could test.
On the evening of the third day, Tong received the official decision: to close night operations until the independent inspection is completed; Repair budget is allocated in stages; The unusual whistleblower protection program is being tested at the airport.
Tong gave the decision to Nghi. “You read.”
“I read the technical part.”
“Read it all.”
I doubt I read it all. There are sentences about workers, goods, passengers, notices and assessment schedules. There is no longer a department standing outside the consequences.
Vuc sat alone near the glass door, looking at the apron lights. Doubt comes. He asked her if she thought she did the right thing.
“I think the decision was right according to the data at the time.”
“Not absolutely true?”
“No decision can accommodate all futures.”
Vuc nodded. “I once wanted forgiveness.”
“I don't have it.”
"Good."
“But I can help you keep the records right.”
Vuc smiled. “That's the harder way to forgive.”
Off the runway, there is no trail of light off the edge. Not because it was fixed, but because the light was still off. This time, darkness was not used to hide the incident. It is recorded as status with reason, responsible person, and next inspection date.
