Chapter 19 — Light Streaks Off The Runway

The meeting to finalize the solution took place in a terminal with no night flights. The waiting seats were half empty, the flight schedule screen only showed morning flights, and the smell of coffee from the closed counter was still in the air.

Ms. Le requested that every decision be written into a table with four columns: to-do, completion criteria, reviewer, and review date. No longer does the “pass” item stand alone.

Nghi presented the results of geometric measurements. The entire W-3 circuit and related landmarks must be re-surveyed. Ms. Le asked: "Are you an official employee yet?"

Uyen said: “Not yet.”

“So why did you make the rules?”

Uyen took a deep breath. "Because you are the one who measured and made this chart. If the regulations are wrong, please point out which line. If you ignore it just because you are not official, the error will come back to the official person later."

The meeting room was silent. Nghi felt that Uyen no longer needed her to protect her by speaking on her behalf.

A year of temporary copies doesn't disappear in eight days of editing. But it was included in the records, in the map, in the way the staff reported and the way the manager signed. Vam Chan airport had not yet turned its lights back on that night.

They wait for one more sprint milestone, one independent measurement, and one signature that can't be skimmed.

The water withdrawal mark came on the eleventh day. The team is in no hurry to turn on the lights. Lan checked the foundation, Khoi checked the landmark, Uyen compared the map, Duy confirmed that the tower was not approaching. Han brought an observer from the company, but did not take the position to sign for the independent team.

Nghi read step by step. Signing allows for controlled testing. The new number 17 box is placed on the ground treatment platform, the cable has slack according to the actual route, the signal filter box is replaced, and the old landmarks are removed from the operating map. They waited another day to send the documents. Duy received confirmation from the crew. Han confirmed that the company had read it. Kha confirmed that the parking lot is zoned. Lan confirms ditches and stakes. Uyen updated the map version.

On the evening of the test trip, there were no passengers. Aircraft are allowed to operate under approved conditions, with plans to change course if weather or systems change. Duy read the status, the pilot repeated it. No one calls it a ritual.

When the plane approached, Nghi stood in the technical room, Uyen was at mark six, Lan was at mark north, Kha was at the apron. Rows of lights from every corner. Dry road surface. The main source is fine. No strange signals.

The plane landed, rolled onto the apron, and stopped at the correct location. There was no applause in the technical room. It only requires recording time and status.

Han stepped off the plane and said the crew did not see the light edge open. She didn't say "perfect". She asked for an inspection schedule after the rain.

“Yes,” Uyen replied, handing over the board.

"Okay."

He signed the decision. Nghi signed to receive.

The first night after reopening, she did not stand looking at the four lights alone. She stood among the twelve people named in the diary, each in a different position. The row of lights does not create streaks on the runway.

No one said airports were safe forever.

They said the system had been tested under these conditions, and the next test was scheduled.
