Chapter 6
Chapter 6 — My mother-in-law made a will to steal my property, leaving the whole family empty-handed
Until they finished gathering things and piling them up in front of the door. I just stood up and walked in front of Chu Cam. I held out my hand. She pretended to be bewildered.
“The jewelry box is on my dressing table.”
My voice is so cold that it has no temperature. Her face immediately changed, her eyes began to avoid.
"I don't know what you're talking about! Which box!"
She still tried to deny it. I… have no patience anymore.
“Chu Cam, I give you two options.”
“One, open your bag, take out your stuff, then get out.”
“Two, I'll call the police again and accuse you of theft.”
“In my house there is a camera, the living room looks straight at the bedroom door.”
“Do you want to try… does it record?”
I lied. But she... believes it. Her face turned as red as pig liver. Before the surprised eyes of Ly Hao and Ly Vy, she trembled and took the jewelry box out of her bag. Then throw it on the ground like throwing something that burns your hand. The box opened. Gold bracelets, necklaces... were scattered all over the floor. Sparkling metallic light. As if mocking their ugly faces. I looked at them. His voice was slow, each word clear.
“Time's up.”
“Now… please get out of my house.”
Just one word, but like lightning in a clear sky, it fell straight down on the three people standing in front of my house, without leaving any dignity behind. Chu Cam stood there, his face could no longer be called unsightly, but was a distorted mixture of humiliation, anger and resentment.
“Hua Tinh… you… just wait!”
She pointed at me, her fingers shaking, but other than that weak threat... there was nothing else she could say. All of her plans, all of her so-called "naturals"... were crushed by me today. She lost. Lose until there's no way back. Ly Hao bowed his head and quietly carried the two largest suitcases, not daring to look at me, not even daring to look at the pile of gold on the floor. This man, from beginning to end, always chose to side with his mother. Even though he saw the theft with his own eyes... he still couldn't say a word of apology to me. He chose silence. Use silence to protect your so-called filial piety. Ly Vy is still crying, but her crying is no longer as defiant as before, only panic and confusion remain. Maybe now, she will understand. The house she thought she wanted to enter was entered. The car she thinks she wants to drive is the one she drives. Never... belonged to her. She's just a big kid who lives off the kindness of others. But now... that kindness has been withdrawn. I bent down, picked up each piece of jewelry from the ground, wiped off the dust, and carefully placed it back in the box. During that process, I didn't look at them again. My indifference… is sharper than any scolding. Completely cut off any remaining fake friendship. The three of them stood at the door, dragging their luggage, looking like people who had been sent away in disgrace. Ly Hao was the last person to leave. He put his luggage outside and turned to look at me one last time. Complicated eyes. There is anger, there is unwillingness... perhaps even regret. But what's the use of regret?
“Hua Tinh.”
His voice was hoarse.
“You… really won't give me another chance?”
I raised my head and looked straight at him. I laughed.
“I already gave it to you.”
“The moment I saw the will, I made the first phone call.”
“When you blamed me for touching your mother's things, instead of asking her why she calculated the assets mine."
“When you gently said ‘it's no big deal'.”
“Opportunity… you closed it yourself.”
His body stopped. He knew I was right. Cannot refute.
“You will regret it.”
In the end, he could only say one sentence. Sounds like a curse. Just like talking to yourself. I don't answer. Just walk to the door, put your hand on the handle. Before their unresponsive eyes... I closed the door. A very loud sound. Very decisive. Cut their world out of my life. Outside the door, there was still the sound of Chu Cam cursing, the sound of Ly Vy sobbing, and the sound of suitcase wheels dragging on the floor. Those sounds... get farther and farther away, getting smaller. Until it disappears completely. The whole world... became quiet. I leaned my back against the cold door and slowly slid down to sit on the floor. Three years of marriage. Three years of patience. Three years of self-deception. It all… ends here. I don't cry. Not even a single tear. Just… tired. Tired to the bone. Their traces still remain in the house.
