Chapter 10 — The Light Keeper at the Sea Gate

News of Cua Vong's escape from the full automation plan quickly spread throughout Ha Trieu village, bringing joy to the entire fishing community who always consider the lighthouse and lightkeepers as an indispensable part of their lives. Mrs. Tu Nhan organized a small party right at her cafe to celebrate, inviting everyone in the village to join in the fun.

"This is thanks to this young engineer," Mr. Nam Vong said, raising a glass of water to invite everyone, his eyes looking at Hoai An full of gratitude. "If it weren't for you, we probably would have seen Khoi leave the lighthouse, and the whole village would have lost an important part of itself."

"I just do my job as honestly as possible," Hoai An replied, feeling a bit embarrassed by the enthusiastic praise from the whole community. "The credit really goes to everyone here who showed me the true value of this place."

The party took place in a warm, cheerful atmosphere, with fresh seafood dishes prepared by the fishermen in the village. Little Coi ran and jumped everywhere, showing off to everyone about the snail shell he gave to Hoai An, proud as if he had also contributed to this victory.

In the middle of the party, when everyone was engrossed in chatting, Khoi quietly pulled Hoai An's hand, leading her to a quieter corner, looking out at the starlit night sea.

"I think, it's time we continue the conversation that was interrupted the other day," he said, his voice somewhat nervous but also full of determination.

Hoai An felt her heart beat faster, looking at him waiting.

"Hoai An," Khoi began, his voice warm and sincere. "Since the day she arrived here, my life has completely changed. She not only helped me keep my job and keep the house associated with the memories of my father and Khiem, but she also helped me relearn how to live, how to love, and how to believe in good things after all the losses I have experienced."

He stopped for a moment, his eyes never leaving her face. "I know, you will soon have to return to the city, continue your work. But I cannot help but say this — I have loved you, Hoai An, as sincerely and deeply as I can."

Tears of happiness suddenly rose in Hoai An's eyes at that sincere confession. "Me too," she replied, her voice shaking with emotion. "I loved you, loved this place, loved the way you faced your pain with resilience and kindness. I didn't want to leave you, leave this place, even if my job required me to do so."

"Then don't go," Khoi said, taking her hand, his voice filled with sincere urgency. "I don't mean you have to give up your career, but that, maybe, we can find a way to not be apart, whatever the path ahead."

Hoai An smiled through her tears and squeezed his hand. "I believe we will find a way," she said. "The monitoring project for the pilot phase needs someone to be in charge directly, and I've been thinking about applying for a transfer to that position, if it means I can continue to be close to this place, close to you."

Khoi couldn't contain his happiness, pulling her into a warm embrace, spinning around in the quiet space under the moonlight, their laughter mixed with the sound of ocean waves and happy music echoing from the party in the distance.

"Thank you," he whispered in her ear, "for coming into my life, for showing me that, after all the pain, love and happiness can always find their way back."

They stood there, embracing each other under the starry night sky, the lighthouse light behind them still steadily scanning the dark sea, like a silent witness to the moment of budding love between two people who had overcome many challenges to find each other.

When they returned to the party, hand in hand, without needing to say it out loud, everyone in the village immediately realized that something important had changed between them. Mrs. Tu Nhan could not hide her satisfied smile, secretly wiping away the tears of happiness, while Mr. Nam Vong affectionately patted Khoi's shoulder, his eyes filled with pride like a father seeing his child finally find complete happiness.

"Your father is definitely smiling somewhere," Mr. Nam Vong whispered to Khoi, his voice filled with emotion. "I see you finally found someone worthy to share your life with."

That night, when the party gradually ended, when everyone had left one by one, Hoai An and Khoi still lingered together under the moonlight, looking towards the towering white lighthouse shining in the middle of the night, knowing that, from now on, that light would not only guide the ships at sea, but also symbolize a new love, a new hope, that was starting to light up for both of them.

Before saying goodbye to go home to rest, Khoi took Hoai An's hand and led her for a short walk along the beach, enjoying the last private moments of a meaningful day. "Do you think your superior will agree to let you transfer to be in charge of the monitoring project here?" he asked, his voice still a little worried even though the happiness was still evident on his face.

"I'm not completely sure," Hoai An admitted, "but I think, after my report is appreciated so much, they will have little reason to refuse. Furthermore, this monitoring project really needs someone with practical experience in the field, and no one understands Cua Vong better than me right now."

"I believe you can do it," Khoi said, squeezing her hand encouragingly. "And no matter the outcome, I will find a way so that we don't have to be apart for too long."

They continued walking in silence for a while, with only the sound of waves and footsteps on the sand for company. Hoai An looked up at the starry sky, feeling a profound peace that she had never experienced before in her life.

"I want to thank you," she said softly, stopping, turning to look at him directly. "Not only because of my love for you, but also because you have shown me a different way of living, slower, more honest, more connected to the truly important values in life."

"It was you who changed me," Khoi replied, gently stroking a strand of hair flying in front of her face. "Before you came, I simply existed, hiding behind work and pain. You gave me a reason to truly live again, to dream of a future, instead of just clinging to the past."

He bent down and gently placed a kiss on her forehead, a simple gesture but containing so much sincere emotion. Hoai An closed her eyes, enjoying that sweet moment, feeling her heart filled with a happiness that she had never dared to dream of when she started this business trip that seemed to be simply a technical mission.

"We should go home and rest," Khoi said after a while, his voice gentle. "There's still a lot to do tomorrow, and I want you to be healthy enough to continue the journey ahead with me."

They walked back to the lighthouse together, hand in hand, under the silver moonlight illuminating the familiar trail, leaving behind a day that completely changed both of their lives - the day when work, love, and hope blended together, opening a new and promising chapter for their story, under the silent but steadfast witness of the Cua Vong lighthouse.

Before entering the house, Khoi stopped one last time, looking up at the top of the tower where the lights were still scanning steadily across the night sky. "Father, Khiem," he whispered softly, his voice filled with a new peace. "I've found happiness. I hope you're both smiling, somewhere."

Hoai An stood next to him, silently holding his hand, saying nothing more, simply being present, sharing that sacred moment with him. She knew that this was not only a promise for a new love, but also a complete healing of the wounds that had been deeply ingrained in Khoi's soul over the past two years.

"Thank you for being here, with me in this moment," Khoi said, turning to look at her with eyes full of love. "I think this is the best way to start a new chapter - not forgetting the past, but carrying it as part of our luggage, moving forward together."

Hoai An smiled, resting her head on his shoulder for a moment, before they both walked into the house, ending a night full of emotions, to prepare for the new days that lie ahead, with so much hope and belief in a brighter future.
