Chapter 18 — The Light Keeper at the Sea Gate

On the morning of the wedding day, Cua Vong put on an unusually brilliant appearance. Red and yellow silk ribbons were hung along the road leading from the village to the lighthouse, fresh flowers decorated the large yard in front of the station, where the wedding theater had been set up the night before, ready to welcome hundreds of guests.

Hoai An sat in front of the mirror in a small room temporarily borrowed from Mrs. Tu Nhan's house, where she was getting makeup for the big day of her life. Her mother stood next to her, her hands trembling as she adjusted the pure white ao dai that Hoai An was wearing, delicately embroidered with patterns of ocean waves and lighthouse lights on the hem.

"Are you nervous?" her mother asked, her voice filled with emotion.

"I'm nervous, but also happier than at any time in my life," Hoai An replied, looking in the mirror, admiring her own reflection in her wedding dress. "I never thought that a simple technical survey trip could lead me to where I am today."

“Fate has its own way of leading us where we need to go,” her mother said, smiling philosophically. "And I believe, you have found the right person for you."

Outside, in the yard in front of the lighthouse, now splendidly decorated for the ceremony, Khoi stood waiting in a traditional dark blue ao dai, his face both nervous and full of happiness. Around him, the entire Ha Trieu village community gathered - Mr. Nam Vong, Mrs. Tu Nhan, Be Coi in a pretty little ao dai reserved for groomsmen, and many other fishermen who became an indispensable part of his story.

When Hoai An appeared and was led by his father into the ceremony hall set up right at the foot of the lighthouse, where the light still shined even in the middle of the day as a sacred symbol for the ceremony, an emotional silence covered the entire space. Khoi looked at her, his eyes could not hide his deep admiration and love.

"Are you nervous?" her father asked softly, as they took the final steps closer to the altar.

"I'm not nervous, dad," Hoai An replied, smiling brightly. "I just feel extremely happy and certain about my decision."

The ceremony took place in a warm atmosphere, full of love, right at the foot of the lighthouse that witnessed the entire painful and happy journey of the Khoi family. When it came to exchanging vows, Khoi held Hoai An's hand, his voice shaking with emotion.

"From the day you entered my life on a seemingly technical survey mission, you brought me not only the truth about that fateful stormy night, but also a love that I never dared to dream of after all my losses," he said, his voice containing all the sincerity of his heart. "I promise to always be by your side, to love you, and to build a life full of happiness with you, where the lighthouse light will forever illuminate our shared journey, with no more darkness of the past, only the light of the present and the future."

"You taught me that, sometimes, the most beautiful things arise from the most painful situations, and that justice, even if it comes late, is always worth pursuing," Hoai An replied, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. "I promise to always be by your side, love you, and continue writing meaningful new chapters in our lives with you, just like how we went through the storm together to find each other."

When the two shared their first kiss as husband and wife, applause and cheers echoed throughout the yard, flower petals were thrown into the sky, creating a beautiful dream-like scene. Mrs. Tu Nhan could not hold back her tears of happiness, Mr. Nam Vong applauded enthusiastically, and the whole community joined in the joy with the newlywed couple.

The wedding party took place immediately afterward in the large yard, with dishes combining Northern flavors and Central coastal specialties prepared by Hoai An's mother and Mrs. Tu Nhan. Music and laughter echoed throughout the cozy space of the small but full of love fishing village. Under the sunset that dyed the sky orange, it marked the beginning of a new happy chapter in the lives of Hoai An and Khoi, a chapter built on a solid foundation of truth, justice, and sincere love.

Father Hoai An, invited to give a congratulatory speech, stood up to raise his glass of wine, his eyes filled with pride. "I have had the privilege of witnessing my daughter's incredible journey," he said, his voice echoing throughout the wedding courtyard. "From a seemingly simple technical survey mission, you have led us to truth, justice, and now, to such a beautiful love. Congratulations to you two, I wish you both happiness, and may your love forever be a testament to the power of truth and courage."

Everyone raised their glasses, congratulations echoed throughout the small fishing village, under the sky that was gradually turning dark purple at dusk. Mrs. Tu Nhan, sitting at a corner of the banquet table, pulled Hoai An's hand closer as she went to greet each table of guests.

"You know," she said, her voice filled with emotion, "during the past two years, I never dared to witness a happy day like this taking place right here. You have brought not only justice, but also joy and hope to Khoi, to our entire village."

"Thank you for always trusting and supporting me," Hoai An replied, hugging the old lady affectionately. "Without the love and protection of you and the whole village, perhaps today would not have happened."

Mr. Nam Vong also came to congratulate him, holding a small, carefully wrapped gift in his hand. "This is a small gift from uncle," he said, handing Hoai An and Khoi an old photo frame. "This is a photo I found in old furniture, of your father, your mother and two brothers in front of the lighthouse, from when your mother was still healthy. I think this could be a meaningful keepsake for your family."

Khoi took the photo frame, his hands trembled slightly when he saw the image of his whole family together, people he only vaguely remembered through his few childhood memories. “Thank you,” he said, his voice choked. "This is the most precious gift I have ever received."

The party lasted until late, with lanterns hanging throughout the yard creating a shimmering, magical scene, blending with the light from the lighthouse that was still regularly scanning the night sky. When most of the guests had left, Hoai An and Khoi stood alone in the middle of the yard, looking up at the starry night sky.

"Are you happy?" Khoi asked, pulling her into his arms.

"I've never been this happy in my life," Hoai An replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "Thank you, for all we've been through together, and for all that lies ahead of us."

Gently kissing her forehead, his eyes were filled with love and deep gratitude for the fate that brought them together, in the midst of a story that began with the pain of a stormy night, and now, an eternal love built from truth, courage, and belief in the good things in life.

They stood quietly in the middle of the yard, watching the last lanterns fade away, their warm light reflecting on the lingering faces - Mrs. Tu Nhan was tidying up the last tables with a few neighbors, Mr. Nam Vong was chatting happily with Father Hoai An about the recent catches of fish.

"I think, this is what father and Khiem want most," Khoi said softly, his voice quiet and thoughtful. "It's not about revenge, or just justice, it's about seeing your family, your community, find joy and unity again after all the pain you've been through."

"I believe dad and Khiem are smiling, looking down at us right now," Hoai An replied, squeezing his hand. "And I believe, they are proud of the son, the brother who never gave up searching for the truth, even if it took two years."

Together they walked slowly through the now deserted yard, the moonlight illuminating the towering white lighthouse, which had witnessed countless generations of the Khoi family living, loving, and now, witnessing a new beginning full of hope. When they stopped in front of the station house, which would be their shared home from tonight onwards, Khoi turned to look at his wife with a radiant smile.

"Welcome home," he said, opening the door and letting her in first, a simple gesture but containing so much meaning for a new beginning, a new life that the two of them would build together, continuing the happy chapters in the story that began with a fateful survey mission, and now, continues under the peaceful moonlight of a meaningful and complete wedding night, where the lighthouse light still shines forever, as steadfast as their love.
