Chapter 9 — The Light Keeper at the Sea Gate

That weekend, the meeting of the Maritime Administration's leadership took place as scheduled. Hoai An sat in the small living room at the station, anxiously watching his phone, waiting for news from Ho Trong Nghia. Khoi, noticing her stress, tries to keep her busy by asking her to help him rearrange some old technical documents.

Late in the afternoon, her phone finally rang. "Hoai An," Ho Trong Nghia's voice rang out, "the leadership has reviewed your report."

"And how did they decide?" Hoai An asked, her heart beating fast because of nervousness.

"They were impressed with the level of detail and practicality of your report," Ho Trong Nghia replied, his voice a bit softer than usual. "Especially the analysis of reaction times in emergency situations. That raised many questions about the safety of completely eliminating the human factor at once."

Hoai An felt a ray of hope rekindle. "So what's the final decision?"

"Cua Vong will not be on the priority list for full automation in the first phase," Ho Trong Nghia announced. "Instead, management proposed another pilot option — installing a monitoring and early warning sensor system as an additional layer of protection, while still maintaining on-site personnel."

Hoai An almost couldn't believe his ears. "That... that's wonderful news," she said, her voice shaking with emotion.

"However," Ho Trong Nghia continued, his tone becoming more serious, "this is only a temporary decision for the pilot phase. The leadership still needs more data on the effectiveness of this combined model in the next six months before making a final and long-term decision. You need to prepare a periodic monitoring and evaluation plan for this period."

"I understand," Hoai An replied, although his heart was still filled with indescribable joy. "I will prepare a detailed plan immediately."

After ending the call, Hoai An immediately ran to find Khoi, who was in the engine room checking equipment. "Koi!" she called out, her voice filled with excitement. "Good news!"

Khoi looked up and saw her radiant face. "What's going on?"

"Cua Vong will not be fully automated, at least not at this stage!" she announced, unable to hide her joy. "They will only install additional support sensor systems, but your job will remain the same!"

Khoi stood still for a moment, as if he needed time to absorb the unexpected news. Then, unable to contain his emotions, he walked over, hugged Hoai An in a joyful hug, and spun her around in the middle of the small room.

“Thank you,” he said, his voice choked with emotion. "Thank you for fighting for this, for me, for this lighthouse."

When he realized he was hugging her tightly, Khoi awkwardly let go, but his eyes still did not leave her face, filled with an emotion that neither of them could deny anymore.

"This is not just my victory," Hoai An said, her voice also shaking with emotion. "This is the result of everything you have shared, the stories you have told, the trust you have shown in me. Without you, I would never have fully understood the true value of this work."

They stood there, facing each other in the small space of the engine room, the atmosphere between them tense in a completely different way than in the first days — no longer wary, reserved, but a nervous anticipation for something to happen.

"Hoai An," Khoi said softly, his voice low, his hand gently touching her cheek. "I..."

Before he could finish his sentence, the alarm bell from the surveillance system suddenly rang loudly, interrupting that tense moment. Both were startled and turned to look at the control screen, where a red warning was flashing.

"What's wrong?" Hoai An asked, her voice immediately turned worried.

Khoi quickly checked the screen, a tense expression flashed across his face. “Sensors detected a ship in trouble offshore, about three nautical miles from here,” he said, his voice returning to the professional, urgent tone he usually had when faced with an emergency. "I need to immediately contact the rescue team and make sure the signal lights are working at full capacity to assist with positioning."

The budding romance between them was temporarily put aside, giving way to more pressing work responsibilities, but both knew that what they had just felt would not disappear, it was simply waiting for a more suitable time to be fully expressed.

Khoi quickly contacted the regional maritime rescue team via radio, providing the exact coordinates that the sensor system had just recorded. “Local fisherman's fishing boat, engine trouble, drifting toward the eastern reef,” he reported, his voice calm but urgent. "Rescue team is needed immediately."

"Can I help?" Hoai An asked, standing next to him, ready to assist with anything needed.

"Can you help me turn on the emergency lighting system," Khoi instructed, pointing to a secondary control panel. "Hold down the red button for five seconds to activate rapid flashing mode, helping the ship position more accurately in the dark."

Hoai An followed the instructions, feeling his heart beat faster with each passing second while waiting. Khoi continued to monitor the radar screen, continuously updating coordinates for the rescue team on their way to the scene.

“The ship is going faster than expected,” Khoi said, his voice tense as he saw the signal on the screen move closer toward the dangerous reef area. "The rescue team will need at least twenty minutes to arrive."

Those twenty minutes passed in extreme tension, both of them almost never taking their eyes off the radar screen, occasionally Khoi contacted via radio to update the situation. Finally, a signal came back from the rescue team, confirming that they had successfully approached the ship in distress and pulled it safely out of the dangerous area.

"They're safe," Khoi announced, breathing a sigh of relief, slumping down in his chair, the tension that had accumulated over the past twenty minutes gradually dissipated. "No one was injured."

Hoai An also breathed a sigh of relief and sat down next to him, both exhausted but filled with relief after the stressful moment they had just experienced. "Do you do this so often?" she asked, her eyes filled with admiration at his calmness and professionalism in an emergency situation.

"Not often like this," Khoi replied, smiling slightly tiredly. "But this is exactly why I believe that humans are still needed in places like this. A sensor can detect an incident, but it is humans who make the decisions, coordinating actions in the most important moments."

"I completely agree," Hoai An said, looking at him with deeper respect than ever. "And now, I am even more confident that the decision to retain your role here is absolutely correct."

That night, after everything had calmed down, Khoi sent Hoai An back to his room. They both stood in front of the door for a long time, the words that had not been said before were still hanging between them.

"We should continue the conversation that was interrupted earlier," Khoi said softly, his eyes filled with deep sincerity.

"Maybe so," Hoai An replied, her heart pounding. "But maybe, after a long night like this, we should leave it for another time, when we're both really ready."

Khoi nodded, understanding what she meant, although there was still a hint of regret in his eyes. “Okay,” he said. "But I won't let it go forever."

He smiled, a warm, promising smile, before turning and walking towards the lighthouse tower to complete the remaining shift of the night, leaving Hoai An standing there, her heart filled with a feeling of happiness mixed with excitement about the good things that were waiting ahead.

She stood watching his figure disappear into the spiral staircase, then returned to the room, lay down on the bed but could not sleep, even though her body was tired after a long and tumultuous day. Her mind kept returning to the moment he touched her cheek, to the look in his eyes at that time, to the unfinished promise between them. She looked up at the ceiling, smiling alone in the darkness, listening to the steady sound of the ocean waves coming in, and the lighthouse light still quietly scanning through the window frame every few seconds, like a familiar rhythm that lulled her to sleep, bringing with her so much hope for a new day, and perhaps, for a new chapter about to open in her life.
