“Are you still in the mood for knitting?” Ton Que Phan lowered his head to wrap the wool. “But what can you do?” “It's not that you're upset.” The sound of an ambulance siren came from downstairs from far away. That sound grew closer and closer, like a knife cutting through the stuffiness of the afternoon. Ninh Uyen clutched Tran Nghien's sleeve. She saw Ton Que Phan's ball of wool roll to the ground, rolling all the way to her feet. Pink wool wrapped around the chair leg. And when Ton Que Phan bent down to pick it up, she mumbled a small sentence: "That's really annoying."06 When the emergency staff walked in, Ninh Uyen could no longer say a complete sentence. She leaned against Tran Nghien's chest, her chest heaving rapidly, her face pale as if water had been poured on her. The nurse looked at her lips and neck area, immediately squatted down to measure her blood pressure and blood oxygen index. "How much did you eat?" Tran Nghien's voice was hoarse: "A whole plate, about a dozen pieces." The nurse looked up at him. "You knew you were allergic but still ate so much?" Tran Nghien's throat rolled slightly. He didn't explain for her, just hugged Ninh Uyen tighter. Ton Que Phan stood next to him, finally a little panicked. "Just a little chives." "Really just a little." "Our family has never had anything happen to anyone after eating this." The emergency doctor who was treating Ninh Uyen, hearing that, immediately turned to look at her: "Is she a lady?" Ton Que Phan was speechless. The doctor's voice was very cold: "The patient is pregnant, the allergic reaction cannot be delayed." "Family people stay away, don't get in the way." The stretcher was brought into the living room. Tran Nghien helped Ninh Uyen lie on the stretcher. Ninh Uyen's hand always clutched his sleeve, her knuckles turned white. Tran Nghien leaned down, close to her ear: "I'm here." "Don't be afraid." Ninh Uyen's eyes were wet, she moved her lips with difficulty. Tran Nghien leaned closer, only to hear her whisper very softly: "I..." His eye sockets heated up. "I'll be okay, you won't be okay either." "I won't let anything happen to you and your mother." Ton Que Phan heard this, as if suddenly remembering something, and quickly followed out the door. "What about the baby?" "Will it affect my grandchild?" Tran Nghien suddenly turned his head. That look made all of Ton Que Phan's words stuck in her throat. "Now, Mom, you better shut up." When the elevator went down, the space was so tight that people couldn't breathe. The stretcher took up more than half of the space. Emergency workers stood next to monitor the machine. Tran Nghien held Ninh Uyen's hand, feeling her hand getting colder and colder. Ton Que Phan was crowded in the corner, his face still full of disapproval. But when she saw that Ninh Uyen's lips were swollen again, her breathing was short and rapid like a torn bellows, and the last bit of hardness at the corner of her mouth gradually disappeared. Inside the ambulance, the white lights were blinding. Ninh Uyen couldn't hear clearly what they were saying. She only knew that Tran Nghien's hand always held tightly and did not let go. The car runs very fast. With each jolt, her stomach twitched. Her throat was tight, her instincts told her to inhale air, but no matter how she inhaled, she couldn't fill her lungs. Tran Nghien bent down to look at her, his voice repeated over and over. "Look at me." "Ninh Uyen, look at me." She tried to open her eyes.
