Chapter 8
Chapter 8 — My Husband's Secretary Announced Pregnancy
Lam Uyen sat on the ground, her eyes were empty, her mouth mumbling as if she had lost her soul:
“It can't be… it can't be… He said he would marry me… He said… he loved me…”
She completely collapsed. All ambitions, all calculations, become bitter jokes tonight. She thought she was the ultimate winner, but unexpectedly, from beginning to end, she was just a pawn. At first, it was Tram Mac's pawn to force a marriage. After that, he became my revenge pawn. And now — an abandoned piece. After scolding Lam Uyen, her mother-in-law still did not let her anger go, so she turned her anger on me.
"And you too! To Thanh!" She pointed at me and cursed: "Don't think it's good that you won today! You harmed my Tram family like this - sooner or later you will face retribution!"
“Did I hurt you?” I looked at her, feeling ridiculous. "Mom, if it weren't for me, what you guys would have to face now would be a coercive order from the bank and the bankruptcy of my father's company. It was me who saved you the last bit of dignity."
"Face? My son was arrested, our family is about to lose, you still dare to talk about face with me?" She screamed like crazy.
“Then Tram Mac did it on his own.” I replied coldly. "And... from now on, please don't call me 'Thanh Thanh' anymore, nor call me my mother. From the moment Tram Mac signed the divorce petition, there was no longer any relationship between me and the Tram family."
My words were like a knife, completely cutting off her last illusion. She looked at me stunned, her lips trembling, intending to curse but couldn't find the words. That's right, I'm no longer her daughter-in-law, what right do you have to scold me? Her father-in-law sighed heavily, stood up, walked to her mother-in-law, and patted her shoulder.
“Stop it, stop making noise.” His voice was hoarse. "Now that it's come to this, what's the use of making noise?"
He looked at me, his eyes carrying a bit of pleading.
"To Thanh... because we also loved you before... can you... be a little lenient?"
“Dad, I'm already lenient.” I calmly looked back at him. "Tram Mac committed adultery in marriage, transferred property, domestic violence, coerced others - any crime was enough to send him to prison for a long time. Yet I only sued for the last crime, it was because of old friendship."
"As for the money," I shook my head, "there is no negotiation. It is the money that saved my father's life, not even a penny is indispensable."
Her father-in-law's shoulders slumped. He understood that it was useless to ask for more. I looked at the three of them — one collapsed, one went crazy, one despaired — and thought, it's time for this drama to end.
“Okay, I'm done.” I stood up, grabbed my bag and empty folder. "I will soon ask a broker to sell this house. Before selling, I will allow you to stay temporarily. Consider it... my last bit of compassion."
Having finished speaking, I turned around and walked away.
“Where are you going?” Mother-in-law shouted behind me.
“Go back to my house.” I don't look back.
“My biological parents' house.”
I pulled the door open and was about to leave, when Lam Uyen suddenly jumped up like crazy and rushed over to hug my leg.
"Sister To! Sister To, don't go!" She cried and screamed, tears and snot covering her face. "Please help me! Please help me!"
“Help you?” I lowered my head to look at her, "What should I help you for?"
“This baby… me Can't keep it!” She screamed. "I'm only twenty-four years old, I can't raise a child alone, my life will be ruined! Ms. To, you're the kindest person, lend me some money, let me have an abortion!" I beg you!”
How ironic. A few hours ago, she was planning to use this baby to ruin my life. Now, she begged me to help her destroy that baby. I looked at her and suddenly felt... no longer interested. Being involved with these bad people and dirty things only makes me lower myself. I pulled out a wad of cash from my wallet, about a thousand, and threw it down in front of her.
“Take it, go to the hospital and check in yourself. This is the last time I help you.”
I don't pity her. I just want to end everything quickly and concisely. Having finished speaking, I did not look back at her, nor did I look at the two withered old men and women sitting in the house. I turned around and walked away. The door closed behind him, blocking out all the crying and despair inside. The night wind blew across my face, cold - but it made me feel extremely alert. I took out my phone and dialed my dad's number. Very quickly, he picked up the phone, his voice both tired and worried:
“Thanh Thanh, how are you?”
I smiled over the phone, a relieved, sincere smile:
“Dad, it's okay.”
“Everything, I have solved it.”
At that moment, I felt like the rock that had weighed down my heart for the past five years was finally... removed by my own hands. It's... morning.
