Chapter 11 — After Doctor Diep Disappeared
That sentence came out of the mouth of a five-year-old child, his voice was still immature, each word sounded very vague. But it's clear. Co Han Chau's face changed, he opened his mouth to scold, but his throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton. There was no sound inside the door, it was unusually quiet. Then, Diep Nam Sanh's voice came from inside. Very flat, as if separated by an extremely thick wall.
“Give it away.”
Co Han Chau stood up: "Nam Sanh, his son is still young, he doesn't understand things yet..."
“I said, give it away.”
The second time was a little more emphatic than the first, but only a little. Co Han Chau stood outside the door, one hand placed on the door frame, her lips pursed into a straight line. He bent down to look at Co Tu Mac, then looked at the tightly closed door. Finally, he held Co Tu Mac's hand and walked towards the other side of the hallway. Co Tu Mac looked back at the hospital room door, peeled off the lollipop and stuffed it into his mouth. That night, Co Han Chau returned alone. He sat down on the chair outside the hospital room door. The nurse got him a blanket, he took it and put it on his knees, leaned his back against the wall and closed his eyes. Inside the front and back doors there was still no movement. He sat all night. At three o'clock in the morning, the sensor light at the end of the hallway went off, and he opened his eyes in the darkness. Diep Nam Sanh is rearranging twelve injury reports. Along with six surveillance camera videos. She clearly classified them, stuffing them into different subfolders. The next morning, Mrs. Co arrived. The eighty-two-year-old woman leaned on a mahogany cane, wore a black cheongsam with hidden flowers, and her hair was combed back without a strand of hair out of place. Two maids helped her into the hospital room, she sat down in a chair next to the bed, holding a cane at her side. Diep Nam Sanh sat on the bed, his back leaning against the pillow, glancing at her. The old lady evaluated her from top to bottom for a few seconds before speaking.
"Nam Sanh, I know that during this time you have to endure pain and suffering."
Diep Nam Sanh did not respond. Old lady Co sighed, her fingers caressing the dragon head engraving on the handle of the cane: "However, the Co family cannot be caught up in bad scandals. The matter of your hand, the matter of your miscarriage, this is the end, absolutely must not be spread out." Her tone was very calm, just like she was instructing the servant about today's menu.
"You are a smart person, you should clearly understand this principle."
Diep Nam Sanh lowered her head to look at her right hand wrapped in gauze. The edge of the bandage was ruffled. She used her left hand to smooth it out.
“Thirty years ago, when you married into the Co family, did you also comfort yourself with words like this?”
Old Lady Co's face immediately darkened. Diep Nam Sanh raised his head, the corner of his mouth slightly raised. That curvature was very small, it couldn't be called a smile, but in that angle there was something hidden, something that Mrs. Co had never seen on her face.
"Don't worry."
Diep Nam Sanh ripped off a loose thread from the roll of gauze.
“I don't need anything.”
The old lady stared at her for a few seconds, then stood up with her cane: "That's good." When she walked out the door, Diep Nam Sanh said a sentence after her.
“Don't need anything else.”
Very voice softly, as if speaking to yourself. The old lady left. Two maids followed behind and went out. The hospital room door closed, the soundproofing foam blocked all footsteps in the hallway. Diep Nam Sanh pulled the phone out from under the pillow.
"The furniture has been arranged. I will be discharged from the hospital in three days, and we will hand it over directly."
The other end of the line said something, she said "yes" then hung up.
