Chapter 40
Chapter 40 — After Doctor Diep Disappeared
“The medicine can save two million people at the same time.”
The camera takes a close-up of her. Her eyes were as calm as the water surface of a autumn well, but in that stillness there was a kind of oppression that made people dare not look straight. The interview ended, the assistant brought up Forbes' latest list of the world's richest people. Number one position. Diep Nam Sanh glanced at it, put it aside, and picked up the next set of documents. Bac Thanh. The giant electronic screen outside the mall was replaying this interview. At seven o'clock in the evening, the light from the screen cast a blue-white strip onto the road. Co Han Chau stood under the screen. He tilted his head back to look at Diep Nam Sanh in the frame. She is smiling. A leisurely smile, controlling the entire situation. From his cloudy eyes, a liquid flowed down. It was winter in Bac Thanh, the ground had a thin layer of snow, trampled by the footsteps of passersby, turning into mushy gray mud. He collapsed in that mud. People around walked around him, some laughing.
“That crazy guy is here again.”
“Ignore him, he's been hanging around here every day.”
Co Han Chau leaned his back against the foot of the overpass. He no longer has the strength to move. The eyes opened slightly, the pupils began to dilate. Everything in his vision was blurry, the concrete roof of the bridge, the street lights in the distance, the drifting snowflakes. And then he saw someone. Step inside from outside under the bridge. Wearing a white blouse, loose hair, holding a medical file in her hand. She smiled at him.
“Hanzhou.”
She called him. That voice was very soft, very gentle, as if it was floating from a very far away place. It was the voice from a long, long time ago, a voice filled with laughter. The corner of Co Han Chau's mouth moved, wanting to smile. He stretched out his crippled right arm. Spread your fingers out, trying to reach towards that white figure. Can only touch the snow. A handful of cold wet snow fell into his palm and immediately melted. The figure wearing a white blouse also disappeared. There's nothing left. There is only black left in front of me. Every time it gets darker. His hand drooped. Still clutching that photo in the palm of my hand. Grip so tightly that your knuckles turn white. The chest heaved slightly for the last time. And then forever immobile. … 10 am. Jane Financial Group's headquarters is in Bac Thanh.
“Boss Diep.”
"This morning, the police announced that an unknown male body was discovered under the bridge, frozen to death. Through fingerprint comparison, it was identified as Co Han Chau."
After saying this, the assistant stopped and observed Diep Nam Sanh's reaction. Diep Nam Sanh's pen stopped on the paper for less than half a second.
“Yes.”
She turned to the next page of the contract, continuing to review the terms. The assistant stood there for about two seconds, turned around and walked out. The door closed gently. In the office, there was only the rustling of papers and the faint sound of traffic coming from outside the window. Diep Nam Sanh finished signing three contracts and put down his pen. She stood up, picked up the cup of coffee on the table and took a sip. Turn around and walk towards the meeting room. The door pushed open, both sides of the long table were filled with people, everyone stood up at the same time.
“Hi Boss Diep.”
Diep Nam Sanh walked to the chair and sat down.
“Let's get started.”
