Chapter 19
Chapter 19 — The Ao Dai Shop at the End of the Street
The following spring, Vinh Xuan shop received a special milestone - the sixty-year anniversary of its founding, from the day Mrs. Xuan, then only twenty-two years old, opened her first shop on Hoai Xuan street. The whole family and close people decided to organize a special event to mark that long journey, combined with the annual cultural festival of the old town that has become a relic.
"Sixty years," Mrs. Xuan repeated that number with a deep contemplation, when Doan and his mother sat next to her in the afternoon preparing for the event. "She never thought she would live long enough to see this day, and she never thought the shop would still exist and develop so brilliantly."
"That's thanks to the solid foundation she built from the first, most difficult days," Doan replied, holding her grandmother's hand tightly. "Without her perseverance and talent, there wouldn't be all that we have today."
Ms. Ngoc Huong, sitting next to her, also contributed with an emotional voice. "Mom has passed on to me all the most valuable things - not only sewing techniques, but also enthusiasm and dedication to the profession. Now, I pass those values on to Doan, and Doan is passing them on to a new generation of students. That is the most magical thing that I think not every family can have."

The anniversary ceremony was solemnly held right in front of the shop's yard, with the attendance of a large number of guests - from long-time customers who have been with the shop for decades, to local government representatives, journalists who have followed the shop's story throughout its journey of fighting for preservation, and even students of the ao dai sewing class taught by Doan.
One of the special guests of the ceremony was Mrs. Tu Lieu, over ninety years old this year, who was the first customer of Vinh Xuan shop since the days Mrs. Xuan first opened the store. Even though he was old and weak, he still tried to attend, and was guided slowly by his nephew.
"I still keep the first ao dai that Mrs. Xuan made for me," Mr. Tu Lieu told a large crowd of guests, his voice trembling but still full of precious memories. "Sixty years have passed, but every time I look back, I still remember the feeling of the first time wearing that shirt - the feeling of being appreciated, of being meticulously cared for down to every stitch."
Mr. Tu Lieu's story moved many people in the crowd to tears. Mrs. Xuan, sitting in a wheelchair in a solemn position, raised her hand to wipe away her tears of happiness, touched by the love that customers who have been loyal for many years still have for her small shop.

Within the framework of the event, Doan organized a special exhibition, displaying typical ao dai models through each period of the shop - from simple, rustic designs of the early years of establishment, to sophisticated innovative ao dai models that Doan and his students have created in recent years, harmoniously combining tradition and modernity.
"This is the sixty-year journey of development of a traditional profession, told through specific works," Doan introduced to visitors to the exhibition, including a group of cultural researchers from a large museum in the city. "Each ao dai is not only a garment, but also a slice of history, reflecting the changes of society and aesthetic taste through each period."
The head of the research team, a middle-aged woman named An, was extremely impressed by the collection. "This is truly a valuable treasure trove of documents about the history of Vietnamese costumes," she commented. "We look forward to working with the salon to build an official archival collection for research and education."
Doan felt extremely honored by that suggestion. "This would be a great honor for our family," she replied. "We always want these values to be recognized and preserved in a more methodical and scientific way, so that not only our family but also future generations of researchers can access and learn."

In the evening, when the event gradually ended and the guests left one by one, Doan's family and closest people gathered together in the cozy space of the garment factory, where soft yellow lights illuminated the silk fabrics and precious mementos of the long journey.
"Today is a wonderful day," Ms. Xuan said, her voice tired but full of satisfaction. "She felt like she had just relived her entire life in just one afternoon."
"You have many wonderful years ahead to continue to witness, grandma," Doan said, sitting down next to her, holding her hands that were wrinkled from the years but still felt the familiar warmth. "I still have a lot of plans, a lot of things I want to do, and I want you to always be by my side to witness it all."
Quang Duy, sitting opposite, smiled at that warm scene, deeply feeling the happiness of being part of this special family. He looked at Doan, his eyes filled with love and a silent determination that was gradually ripening in his heart - determination to soon turn the promises of a shared future into reality, to join Doan in writing the next chapters of this beautiful story, not only as a companion, but as an official member of the family that welcomed him with all the warmth and sincerity right from the most awkward first days.

The next morning, when the whole family was still reeling from the celebration, Bich Ngan brought another good news. "Miss Doan, last night a customer left me a business card," she said, handing Doan an elegantly printed business card from a famous domestic fashion magazine. "They want to invite their store to participate in a fashion show honoring traditional ao dai, held on the occasion of national culture day next month."
Doan held the business card, unable to hide his surprise and excitement. "This is a great opportunity to introduce the salon's designs to the wider public," she said, her eyes lighting up. "But it's also quite a challenge, because the preparation time is quite rushed."
"I believe you can do it," Bich Ngan replied confidently. "After everything you've been through, I think, no challenge is too much for you anymore."
In the following days, the whole garment factory entered a new busy cycle. Doan, Bich Ngan and the students in the ao dai sewing class put all their heart and soul into perfecting the special collection for the show - a collection that combines traditional motifs preserved through three generations with modern, sophisticated tailoring, suitable for the aesthetic taste of today's youth without losing the core spirit of the Vietnamese ao dai.
"I want each design to tell a story," Doan shared with the group during an ideation meeting. "Not just beautiful lines, but also cultural values, memories that we want to convey to viewers."
Thanh Truc, with the perspective of someone who has lived away from home for many years, contributes a special idea. "I think we can design an ao dai inspired by the journey back to our roots," she proposed. "From the deep, simple colors at the top, symbolizing the years away from home, gradually transitioning to vibrant, traditional patterns at the bottom, symbolizing the rediscovery of connection with national culture."
That idea received enthusiastic applause from the whole group. "That is an extremely profound and meaningful idea," Doan said, unable to hide his pride at the maturity of his student's creative thinking. "We will make it the main design of this collection."

During those busy weeks of preparation, Quang Duy always took the time to stop by the shop every night, sometimes just to sit quietly and observe Doan working, sometimes to help with small tasks such as arranging fabrics or making tea for the group working hard at the sewing machine.
"You don't have to come here every night," Doan said one evening, when he saw Quang Duy reappear after a long day at the company. "I know you're also busy with the pottery village project."
"I want to stay here," Quang Duy replied simply, sitting down next to her. "Seeing you passionate about your work, with your passion, that's what makes me feel happiest after a long day."
Doan smiled, resting her head on his shoulder for a moment before returning to the unfinished needlework. The two did not need to say anything more, simply enjoying each other's presence in the cozy, familiar space of the garment factory - a place that has witnessed so many ups and downs, so many important moments in the journey that they have gone through together, and is now continuing to write promising new pages of a shared future that is gradually taking shape.
