Chapter 21 — The Ao Dai Shop at the End of the Street

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Three weeks after the cooperation signing ceremony with the fashion store chain, Vinh Xuan store received its first large order - fifty high-end ao dai sets that needed to be completed within a month to be released in stores on holiday. This is the largest order the shop has ever received, and the pressure to complete it on schedule and with the right quality weighed heavily on Doan and the entire team.

"Do you think we'll make it in time?" Bich Ngan asked, her eyes filled with worry as she looked at the dense to-do list posted on the planning board.

"We have to make it in time," Doan replied, her voice determined even though she couldn't hide the tension in her heart. "This is an opportunity to prove that Vinh Xuan shop can fully meet large-scale orders while still maintaining meticulous craftsmanship."

The whole garment factory entered an unprecedented period of stressful work. Doan, Bich Ngan, Thanh Truc and other students in the class had to work shifts almost without stopping, from early morning until late at night, to ensure that every stitch met the highest standards that the shop was always proud to maintain.

At the same time, Quang Duy is also facing a separate challenge at the pottery village project. A sudden heavy rain collapsed part of the roof of the main kiln area, causing significant damage to the facilities that the village had just invested in rebuilding according to his company's plan.

"We need to fix it quickly," Quang Duy said in an emergency meeting with the team, his voice more tense than usual. "If we don't make repairs before the next stormy season, all the efforts to rebuild the kiln over the past few months could go down the drain."

In the following days, Quang Duy spent almost all his time in the pottery village, supervising repair work, working with contractors, and calming the spirits of artisans who were worried about this unexpected incident. His busy schedule left him with almost no time to visit Vinh Xuan shop as usual.

Quang Duy's prolonged absence, despite having a legitimate reason, gradually made Doan feel disappointed, especially during a period when she was also struggling with her own work pressure. There were nights when she worked until late, waiting for a text or a call from him, but only received silence because he was equally busy.

"What's wrong with Ms. Doan?" Thanh Truc whispered to Bich Ngan one evening, when they both noticed that Doan seemed quieter than usual, although his hands were still nimble on the needle and thread.

"She must be missing Mr. Duy," Bich Ngan replied softly, her eyes full of understanding. "We're both busy these days and don't have much time to see each other."

One evening, when Doan was alone completing the final embroidery stitches for an ao dai in a large order, her phone vibrated with a text message from Quang Duy: "I'm sorry for not being able to come by often these days. There's a problem at the pottery village, I need to be here to handle it. Are you okay?"

Doan looked at the message and felt a little sad even though she clearly understood the reason behind his absence. She typed back a short reply: "I'm fine. Just take care of things over there first." But in her heart, she couldn't help but feel an invisible distance gradually appearing between the two of them, amidst the busyness of both of them.

The tension reached its peak one evening, when Doan, after an exhausting day of work, discovered that an important batch of fabric for the order was delivered in the wrong color, threatening to slow down the already tight schedule. While confused, she called Quang Duy to find some comfort, but the call only rang and then went to voicemail - he was in the middle of a furnace troubleshooting meeting and couldn't answer the phone.

The overwhelming feeling of loneliness and overload made Doan unable to hold back tears of exhaustion. She sat quietly alone in the atelier, among fabrics and unfinished dresses, wondering if she was trying to juggle too many things at once—her expanding business, her teaching, and the relationship she treasured more than anything else in her life.

It wasn't until nearly midnight, when Quang Duy finished work and saw the missed call, he hurriedly called back, his voice filled with worry as he listened to Doan recount the incident with the fabric lot and the pent-up emotions over the past few days. "I'm sorry for not being there for you when you needed me," he said, his voice heavy with regret. "I will arrange to come to the shop as early as possible tomorrow morning, we can find a solution together."

That short conversation, although it could not erase all the fatigue, partly helped Doan feel lighter, realizing that, even though they were both facing their own challenges, the love and care for each other was always there, just sometimes obscured by the chaos of life in which they were both trying their best to build a better future.

Just as promised, the next morning Quang Duy showed up at Vinh Xuan shop early, carrying a box of cakes and two cups of hot coffee. He found Doan sitting at the desk, his eyes still dark from lack of sleep, and still trying to contact the fabric supplier to resolve the problem of wrong color delivery.

"Let me give you a hand," Quang Duy said, pulling out a chair to sit next to him. "I know some acquaintances in the textile industry, maybe they can help us find an alternative fabric source faster."

Thanks to his support, just that morning, Doan found another weaving factory that could provide the right fabric needed, delivered within two days - enough to not delay the overall progress of the entire order. Relief was evident on Doan's face when the problem was resolved.

"Thank you," she said, taking his hand with a grateful look in her eyes. "I'm sorry that last night was a bit... I know you're also working very hard in the pottery village."

"No, I'm the one who needs to apologize," Quang Duy replied, squeezing her hand. "I let work take me away too much, forgetting that you also need me by your side, especially in difficult times like these."

The two sat quietly together for a while, enjoying the rare moment of peace amid their busy days. “We need to find a better balance,” Doan said, her voice thoughtful. "We're both pursuing meaningful things, but I don't want to keep us apart."

"I think so too," Quang Duy replied, his eyes becoming serious. "Maybe, we need to set a rule — no matter how busy we are, we still have to spend at least one full evening together every week, no work, no phones, just the two of us."

Doan smiled, feeling relieved at his understanding and goodwill. "I like that idea," she replied. "Can we start tonight?"

"Okay," Quang Duy smiled, the familiar warm smile returned to his face after stressful days. "Even if it's just a simple dinner, I think it will still be the most meaningful evening of my week."

That small incident, although causing a lot of tension, ultimately became a valuable lesson for both of them - reminding them that, amidst the great ambitions that each person is pursuing, preserving and nurturing their own relationship is equally important, and needs to be consciously taken care of, and cannot automatically assume that the relationship will always be strong without any effort.

True to his promise, that night Quang Duy returned to the shop after arranging unfinished work, bringing with him a simple dinner that he personally prepared - a few familiar dishes that he knew Doan loved, neatly arranged on a small table behind the garment factory.

"Are you cooking?" Doan asked, unable to hide his surprise and excitement when seeing the simple but enthusiastic tray of rice.

"Not very good," Quang Duy replied, scratching his head a bit sheepishly. "But I want to make something for you myself, instead of just ordering ready-made food like usual."

That simple dinner became one of the warmest moments the two had ever had amidst their busy days. They ate and talked about all sorts of things unrelated to work - childhood memories, small dreams that had never been shared, plans for a long trip that both of them had always cherished but never had the chance to do.

"Do you remember the first time I walked into the shop?" Doan asked, her eyes sparkling with nostalgia. "At that time, I thought you were just a normal customer coming to order a dress for my mother."

"I didn't expect that just a small order would lead me on a journey that completely changed my life," Quang Duy replied, holding her hand across the small table. "Sometimes I still wonder, if I hadn't walked into the shop that day, what my life would be like now."

"I think, maybe fate has arranged for us to meet at the right time," Doan said, smiling confidently. "Just at a time when we both need something, someone, to overcome the challenges ahead together."

They sat together until late, fully enjoying the first evening in the new rules they had just set together, clearly feeling that, no matter how busy and challenging life was, as long as they both worked hard and cherished the moments together, the love between them would always be nurtured and always find a way to bloom amidst the daily chaos of life.
