Chapter 27
Chapter 27 — The Ao Dai Shop at the End of the Street
The last months of pregnancy passed at a pace that was both exciting and happy for the whole family. Doan gradually reduced the direct workload at the garment factory, transferring many important responsibilities to Bich Ngan, who is now confident and capable enough to take on the main management role in daily production stages.
"I feel ready to shoulder more responsibilities," Bich Ngan affirmed in a work handover meeting, her eyes filled with confidence that has been honed over many years with the shop. "You can rest assured and rest, prepare to welcome the baby. I and Thanh Truc will take care of everything here."
Doan smiled, feeling deep pride when witnessing the outstanding growth of the student she had guided from the first days of confusion. "I have absolute confidence in you," she replied. "Looking at you now, I remember myself many years ago, when I still had to learn little by little from my grandmother."

One morning in late autumn, when the first labor pains appeared, the whole family immediately took Doan to the hospital in a state of both excitement and worry. Quang Duy held his wife's hand tightly throughout the journey, constantly encouraging and reassuring her amid the increasingly intense pain.
"I'm here, with you," he whispered, wiping the sweat from Doan's forehead as she endured the pain of labor. "We're going to see you soon."
The birth process lasted many stressful hours, with the whole family waiting outside the delivery room in an indescribable state of suspense. Ms. Xuan, even though her health did not allow her to go to the hospital, kept calling to ask about the situation, unable to hide her anxiety mixed with her eagerness to wait for good news.
Finally, the cry of a baby girl being born rang out, dispelling all stress and anxiety, replaced by a burst of happiness that couldn't be expressed in words. Quang Duy, who was allowed into the delivery room immediately afterward, could not hide his tears of happiness when he held his little daughter in his arms for the first time.
"The baby is born," he whispered, his voice choked with extreme emotion, looking at Doan lying tired but happy on the hospital bed. "Our daughter is so beautiful."

The whole family decided to name the baby girl Pham Bui Thuc Anh, combining the last names of both parents, with the middle letter Thuc carrying the meaning of inheriting from the mother's name, while the word Anh represents the wish that the child will grow up smart and talented, continuing the traditions of both families.
Mrs. Xuan, when she was taken to the hospital to meet her great-granddaughter for the first time, could not hide the tears of happiness that flowed endlessly. "Finally, I was blessed to hold my great-grandchild," she said, her voice trembling with emotion, her trembling hands cradling little Thuc Anh in her arms. "She looks exactly like Doan, especially her eyes."
"I hope that Thuc Anh will grow up worthy of her name, continuing the good values that her whole family has preserved for many generations," Doan said, her eyes filled with love as she looked at her little daughter sleeping in her great-grandmother's arms.
News of the birth of baby Thuc Anh quickly spread throughout the ancient street of Hoai Xuan, bringing joy to the entire community that had followed and accompanied the story of Doan and Quang Duy over the years. Many neighbors and close friends visited one after another, bringing small gifts and sincere blessings for the new family member.

The first weeks of parenthood brought Doan and Quang Duy countless new experiences, both surprising and full of happiness. Together, the two learned how to take care of their child, stayed up all night to comfort the crying child, and had moments of watching the child sleep soundly with a boundless respect and love that only parents can fully understand.
"I never thought that love for a small creature could be so great," Doan shared with Quang Duy late one night, when they both sat together watching Thuc Anh sleeping in the crib. "It's beyond anything I ever imagined."
"I also feel the same thing," Quang Duy replied, putting his arm around his wife's shoulders, both immersed in the peaceful, warm moment of a small family that had just been completely formed. "And I believe, that love will continue to grow, along with your child's maturity, becoming a source of motivation for us to continue trying and building a better future for your child."
Amid the busyness and fatigue of the first days of parenthood, the two still found complete happiness in every little moment with their daughter, clearly feeling that this small family is the most beautiful and meaningful achievement that the two have built together from a sincere love, forged through many challenges to become more sustainable and profound than ever.

When Thuc Anh turned one month old, the family held a full-month celebration according to traditional customs, inviting relatives, close friends and many neighbors to celebrate. The ceremony took place warmly right at Vinh Xuan shop's yard, with a full offering tray according to traditional rituals that Mrs. Xuan personally guided her children and grandchildren to prepare.
"In the past, when Ngoc Huong was full month old, she also held a worshiping ceremony like this," Mrs. Xuan recounted, her eyes filled with nostalgia as she sat and watched the whole family busy preparing. "Now, seeing her great-granddaughter also receive such a complete ceremony, she feels extremely peaceful."
Bich Ngan and Thanh Truc, as sisters in the family, also contributed to preparing for the ceremony, from decorating the space to preparing small gifts for guests. "I never thought I could be so close to your family that I could be considered family like this," Thanh Truc shared, unable to hide her emotions as she looked at baby Thuc Anh sleeping in a gorgeously decorated crib.

Mr. Sau Than and several pottery artisans also traveled far to celebrate, bringing with them another special gift - a small set of ceramic bowls specifically for children, fired with adorable animal motifs, showing the whole village's respect for the family who helped them revive the traditional craft.
"This is a gift we made ourselves for the baby," he said, handing the lovely bowl and bowl to Quang Duy and Doan. "I hope you grow up healthy, smart, and continue the spirit of your parents."
The month-long ceremony lasted in a warm atmosphere, bustling with laughter and constant blessings from loved ones who had accompanied Doan's family throughout the long and meaningful journey. Looking around at that gathering scene, Doan felt more deeply than ever that her little daughter was fortunate to be born in a community full of love, ready to protect and support her in every step of her future adulthood.
"She is so lucky to have a family, a loving community like this," Quang Duy whispered in Doan's ear, as they both watched their daughter being passed around and held by loved ones. "I believe, she will grow up to be a strong, kind woman, just like her mother."
Doan smiled, leaned her head on her husband's shoulder, her heart filled with happiness and deep gratitude for everything life had given to her small family.

After the ceremony, when the guests had left one by one, Doan took advantage of the rare silence to sit next to Mrs. Xuan, reviewing old stories that she often told whenever she had the opportunity. "Grandma, can you tell me more about the first days you opened the shop?" she asked, wanting to remember those precious memories carefully so she could tell them to her daughter later.
"Those days were very difficult," Ms. Xuan began, her voice slow, her distant eyes remembering the years gone by. "She had to weave each first piece of fabric herself, teaching herself how to sew through old books she borrowed from a tailor in Saigon. There were nights when she stayed up all night just to complete a small order in time, but she never felt regretful about the path she chose."
"I think it was her spirit of perseverance that became the foundation for everything our family has today," Doan said, holding his grandmother's hand respectfully.
"I believe, eventually Thuc Anh will also inherit that spirit," Mrs. Xuan replied, her eyes looking towards the cradle where baby Thuc Anh was sleeping. "The blood of the resilient women in our family flows in her veins, child. I'm sure of that."
Doan sat quietly next to her grandmother in the late afternoon, listening to precious confessions, feeling more clearly than ever the strong bond between generations of women in her family - a thread woven by perseverance, love and pride in traditional values, which will now continue to be passed on to the next generation, so that the story of Vinh Xuan shop will continue to be written over the years.
