Chapter 28 — The Ao Dai Shop at the End of the Street

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Three years have passed since Thuc Anh was born, bringing with it many changes in the whole family's life. Vinh Xuan shop, under the skillful management of Doan and strong support from Bich Ngan and Thanh Truc, has grown significantly, opening a small branch right in the city center to serve the growing needs of customers, while the original shop in Hoai Xuan old street still retains the traditional, cozy atmosphere like in the beginning.

Quang Duy, with the Heritage Creation Company, has also expanded its operations to many different provinces and cities, successfully consulting for more than ten projects to preserve traditional craft villages across the country, from brocade weaving villages in the Northern mountains to fishing villages on the Central coast, each project bearing the imprint of the philosophy he learned from his first journey in Hoai Xuan.

"I just received an invitation to participate in an international conference on cultural heritage preservation," Quang Duy shared with Doan one evening, when they were both teaching Thuc Anh to take her first steps in the cozy living room of the small house. "They want you to present the sustainable development model we have adopted here."

"It's a great honor," Doan replied, unable to hide his pride as he watched his husband become a recognized expert in the field he passionately pursued. "I believe your experiences will inspire many others."

One autumn afternoon, when Doan and Mrs. Xuan were sitting and chatting on the shop's porch as usual, the old lady suddenly became unusually thoughtful, her eyes looking far away toward the old street that was dyed yellow under the late afternoon sunlight.

"I don't feel very well these days," Ms. Xuan said, her voice was gentle but contained an unusual calmness. "She thought, maybe it's time for her to prepare herself for what's to come."

Doan felt his heart tighten at those words. "Don't say that," she replied, holding her grandmother's hand tightly, trying to suppress her rising emotions. "She will be healthy for a long time to continue watching Thuc Anh grow up, to continue telling her family stories."

Mrs. Xuan smiled kindly, reaching out to caress Doan's hair like in her childhood. “Son, I lived a full, meaningful life,” she said, her voice filled with peace. "She has witnessed the Wing Chun shop being preserved and developed over many generations, has seen her children find perfect happiness, and has been able to hold her great-granddaughter. If she had to leave, she would leave in peace and contentment."

In the following months, Ms. Xuan's health gradually weakened according to the natural law of age, even though the whole family devotedly took care of her and took her for examination and treatment at the best medical facilities. Doan spends more time with his grandmother, taking advantage of every remaining precious moment to remember and preserve the stories and lessons that she has taught throughout his life.

On a peaceful winter morning, when the whole family gathered around the hospital bed, Mrs. Xuan breathed her last breath in peace, with a gentle smile remaining on her face full of wrinkles over the years. She left while still holding Doan's hand tightly, her eyes looking towards Thuc Anh who was sleeping soundly in Quang Duy's arms, like a most peaceful and complete goodbye.

Mrs. Xuan's funeral was held by the entire Hoai Xuan ancient street in deep sorrow but also full of respect and gratitude for the woman who spent her whole life building and preserving a precious cultural heritage for the community. Hundreds of people, from longtime customers to those who had only heard her story through word of mouth, came to see her off on her final journey.

"The old lady lived an admirable life," journalist Duc Anh told Doan during the funeral, his voice filled with respect. "Her story, and that of her entire family, will forever be an inspiration to many people about the spirit of perseverance and preserving precious traditional values."

After Mrs. Xuan passed away, Doan spent a lot of time rearranging the shop's historical display area, adding memorabilia and stories about her grandmother's life, making this place not only a place to preserve the history of Vinh Xuan shop, but also a place to remember and honor the woman who laid the foundation for everything the family has today.

"She's not really leaving us," Doan told Thuc Anh one afternoon, when she took her young daughter to visit the display area, pointing to a photo of Mrs. Xuan placed solemnly among precious memorabilia. "She is always here, in every stitch, in every story I will tell you, in the spirit of perseverance that you will inherit."

Thuc Anh, even though she was too young to fully understand the profound meaning of her mother's words, still looked up at the photo with clear, innocent eyes, as if she was feeling an invisible but strong connection with her great-grandmother whom she never had the chance to fully understand, but will always be present in the story of her life, through the values that the whole family has worked hard to preserve and pass down through generations.

In the weeks after the funeral, Mrs. Ngoc Huong, now the oldest person in the family, took on the role of preserving the rituals and traditions her mother left behind. She spends more time at the shop, not only to help with the business, but also to feel her mother's familiar presence still lingering somewhere among the fabrics and embroidery frames that have been with the family for the past sixty years.

"Are you feeling okay, Mom?" Doan asked one afternoon, when he saw his mother standing quietly in front of the historical display area, her eyes thoughtfully looking at Mrs. Xuan's photo.

"I'm fine," Mrs. Ngoc Huong replied, turning to smile at her daughter, although her eyes still had a hint of sadness. "I'm just thinking, now the responsibility of preserving the values she left behind has shifted to my shoulders, and I want to make sure I do it well, not to disappoint her."

"Mom has been doing very well," Doan replied, hugging his mother respectfully. "And I believe, when the time comes, I will also continue that responsibility, just like how my mother took over from her."

That short conversation further solidified in both mother and daughter a deep understanding of the continuous flow of responsibility, love, and preservation of family heritage through each generation — a never-ending flow, always continued by the resilient, devoted women of the Pham family.

To commemorate Ms. Xuan, Doan and Quang Duy decided to establish a small scholarship fund called "Vinh Xuan Fund", to support students in difficult circumstances but who are passionate about pursuing traditional ao dai sewing, as well as supporting projects to preserve craft villages in disadvantaged communities across the country.

"This will be the best way for her spirit to continue to live on, not only in the memories of her family, but also in the lives of many other people she has never had the opportunity to meet," Doan shared at the scholarship fund launching ceremony, solemnly held right at Vinh Xuan salon with the attendance of many relatives, friends and even the first students to receive scholarships.

Quang Duy, standing next to his wife, could not hide his pride. "She taught us that heritage is not only what is preserved, but also what is continued to be passed on and spread," he said. "This scholarship fund is our way of continuing that spirit, so that her story will continue to be written through many other lives."

The ceremony ended in a solemn and warm atmosphere, marking a meaningful way for the whole family to overcome the pain of loss, turning the love and gratitude for Mrs. Xuan into a living legacy, continuing to spread good values to many generations and many other communities in the future.

That evening, when everyone had left, Doan and Quang Duy took Thuc Anh out to sit on the porch of the shop, watching the sparkling stars in the night sky of the old town. "Do you know," Doan whispered to his daughter, even though he knew she was too young to fully understand, "your great-grandmother left a great gift to all of us, not only the Wing Chun shop, but also a lesson about perseverance, about love for the values we cherish."

Quang Duy put his arms around both mother and child, deeply feeling the warmth and completeness of the small family amidst the losses they had experienced. "I believe, she's smiling when she sees us right now," he said, his gaze raised to the starry night sky. "And she will always be proud of what her family continues to build."
