Chapter 12 — The Machine of Dreams

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Five days before leaving for the regional qualifying venue — a large sports arena in the city center, nearly two hours by car from the school — Mr. Vinh decided to organize a complete "rehearsal" session, fully simulating the actual competition process, from registration, weight checking, to technical presentations in front of a mock jury.

"I'm going to play the toughest judge possible," he announced, causing the team to laugh nervously. "If you can pass this rehearsal, I'm sure you will confidently face whatever happens on the actual competition day."

The rehearsal started with the robot weighing section, where Mr. Vinh used the same electronic scale that the organizers would use to strictly check the overall weight. The whole team held their breath when the robot was placed on the scale, their eyes glued to the data display screen.

"Four point eight three kilograms," Mr. Vinh read aloud, comparing it to the allowable limit of five even kilograms. "There's nearly two hundred grams left over, quite safe."

The whole group breathed a sigh of relief, but Hoàng Nam still couldn't hide his tension as he continued to watch the functional testing part. The robot in turn overcomes each simulated obstacle — an inclined ramp, an object-grabbing area, and a zigzag path that requires high control precision — with stable performance, without any significant errors.

When it came to the technical presentation, the whole team stood in a row in front of the "judge panel" with only Teacher Vinh, each person taking turns presenting their responsibility. Bảo Châu, even though she had carefully prepared a presentation about the design process, still felt her heart beat fast when it was her turn.

"During the design of the outer shell," she began, her voice shaking slightly but trying to keep it steady, "I considered aesthetic factors and technical requirements, especially aerodynamics and weight distribution. The design inspiration came from the shape of a falcon spreading its wings, symbolizing..."

"Stop," Mr. Vinh interrupted, his tone assuming the sternness of a real examiner. "You say 'design inspiration' but don't explain clearly how it relates to actual competition performance. The judges need to see a clear connection between aesthetics and function, not simply a pretty story."

Bảo Châu paused for a moment, but quickly regained her composure and adjusted her presentation. "Yes, let me clarify. The aerodynamic shape inspired by bird wings helps reduce drag when the robot moves at high speed, while the honeycomb structure inside the shell helps reduce overall weight while still ensuring the necessary durability, allowing the team to arrange more space for the backup battery system."

"Much better," Mr. Vinh nodded, a fleeting smile showing that he was just challenging and not really being strict. "Remember to always connect every design decision to a specific competition benefit, the judges will actually ask much harder questions than this."

The rehearsal continued with a presentation by Hoàng Nam on the overall competition strategy, and by Tấn Phát on the automatic control system. Everything went quite smoothly until the final test — running the entire mission chain without stopping for exactly two minutes and thirty seconds, the allotted time of an official match.

The robot started up and moved quickly through the first obstacles, but when it reached the stage of picking up objects in the third round, the robot arm suddenly stopped midway, emitting an unusual motor hissing sound before stopping completely.

"No..." Hoàng Nam muttered, but this time, instead of panicking like before, he turned to the team with a surprisingly calm expression. "Everyone, this is exactly why we need to practice. Tấn Phát, check the control system error log. Đức, check the arm's actuator mechanism. Bảo Châu, check to see if the newly installed shell is hindering movement."

The team quickly divided tasks, each person focusing on their responsibilities with a smooth coordination that Bảo Châu realized had been honed over weeks of working together. Within just ten minutes, Đức discovered the cause — a small gear in the transmission mechanism had worn out after repeated testing, causing the movement to jam under heavy load.

"Do we have spare gear?" Hoàng Nam asked, his voice still surprisingly calm.

"Yes, I always carry a full set of spare parts," Đức replied, quickly took out the toolbox, and began replacing broken gears with skilled hands.

While waiting, Teacher Vinh stood watching from afar, nodding with satisfaction. "This is exactly what I want you to see," she said to Bảo Châu, who was standing next to him waiting for her turn to re-examine the shell. "How you react when something goes wrong is much more important than trying to prevent every possible incident from happening. No one can predict everything, but a united team that trusts and coordinates will always find a solution."

After the gears were replaced, the robot returned to normal operation, completing the remaining series of tasks within the specified time. The whole team cheered in celebration, not because everything went perfectly from the start, but because they demonstrated their ability to handle problems calmly and effectively when working together.

"How does it feel?" Bảo Châu asked Hoàng Nam when the rehearsal ended, the two were packing up their equipment together.

"Much better than I thought," he admitted, a relieved smile appearing on his lips. "Maybe for the first time during the preparation process, I feel truly confident that we will be okay, even if something doesn't go as planned."

"That's because you've learned not to carry all the responsibilities alone anymore," Bảo Châu said, smiling. "You assigned tasks very quickly and trusted each person, instead of rushing in to fix everything yourself like before."

Hoàng Nam looked at her for a moment, his eyes containing a deep gratitude that no words needed to fully express. "Thanks for helping me realize that," he said softly. "Not just today, but from the beginning of the school year until now."

When the team left the factory that night, the atmosphere was no longer as heavy and tense as the previous days, but filled with a calm, steady confidence — a confidence that didn't come from everything being perfect, but from the belief that no matter what happened, they would get through it together. There were five days left until the official competition day, and for the first time in many weeks, Bảo Châu felt like she was looking forward to that day, instead of dreading it.

The remaining days before departure passed at a much slower pace than the previous stressful sprint period. Following Mr. Vinh's advice, the team switched to "light maintenance" mode — no more major changes to the design or programming, just focusing on re-checking what had been completed, making sure every screw was tightened, every piece of code ran smoothly.

Bảo Châu took advantage of that rare free time to complete the final decorative details - a small patterned strip running along the robot's wing, inspired by the lines on bird feathers, so delicate that it had to be painted with a handbrush instead of a regular spray paint could. She worked meticulously for hours, sometimes alone in the workshop during her lunch break, enjoying the rare silence amid the busy grind of the semester.

"This detail is really beautiful," Hoàng Nam commented one afternoon, when he stopped by to check on the progress and caught her carefully painting each small grain. "But did the judges have time to see it? The robot moved quite fast during the competition."

"It's okay," Bảo Châu replied, without stopping. "There are details that no one needs to see to be valuable. Sometimes, knowing it's there, knowing I've put all my heart and soul into every smallest centimeter, is enough to make the work meaningful."

Hoàng Nam was silent for a moment, watching her work thoughtfully. "I think that's what I need to learn from you the most," he said finally. "Not everything needs to be measured by the end result. Sometimes the process has its own value."

The evening before the departure, Mr. Vinh gathered the team one last time to share the detailed schedule - bus departure time, check-in time at the hotel near the stadium, meeting time with the organizers. Looking around at each member's face, he smiled with satisfaction.

"I have been with this club for four years," he said, his voice with a rare touch of emotion. "And this is the first time I've felt such a strong team spirit before an exam. Regardless of tomorrow's results, I'm already proud of you guys."

Those words made the whole team silent for a moment, each person had their own emotions but shared the same determination. Bảo Châu looked around at the familiar faces that had become as close as family over the past few months, feeling her heart filled with a warm hope, ready for whatever was waiting ahead.
