Chapter 25 — The Machine of Dreams

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

One day before the team left for the national finals, Bảo Châu texted Hoàng Nam to come to the factory in the afternoon, citing the need to complete one last small detail on the robot before packaging. When he arrived, she was already sitting at her familiar desk, in front of her was a small, meticulously designed decal in the shape of a stylized eagle spreading its wings, with small text engraved underneath.

"What is this?" Hoàng Nam asked, curiously looking at the decal she was carefully trimming each border.

"The last detail for the robot," Bảo Châu replied, without raising her head, focusing on the meticulous work before her. "I think it needs an official name, instead of just calling it 'team robot' forever."

"What's your name?" Hoàng Nam asked, sitting down next to her, observing with interest.

"Đức," Bảo Châu replied, finally completing the trimming and holding up the decal for him to see more clearly. "It means wings. I think the name is appropriate, because that's exactly what this robot represents—something that was once just a dry iron frame, now given wings to fly and become something more beautiful than its constituent parts."

Hoàng Nam picked up the decal and looked at it carefully, a warm smile gradually spreading on his face. "Đức," he repeated, as if tasting the sound of that name on his tongue. "I like this name. It's more suitable than any dry technical name I've thought of."

Together, they pasted the decal on the robot's head, right under the camera protection glass, a solemn but not too ostentatious position, true to the design spirit that Bảo Châu had pursued throughout the school year. When the work was completed, the two took a step back and looked at the final result - the robot named Đức, ready for the biggest battle of the whole journey.

"We have come a long way," Hoàng Nam said, his voice filled with emotion as he looked at the completed robot before his eyes. "From a bare iron frame, to..."

"To something with a soul," Bảo Châu continued, smiling at him.

The factory now had only two people left; the other members had left early to prepare things for tomorrow's trip. The late afternoon sunlight filtered through the window, dyeing the whole space in a warm, quiet yellow color.

"Bảo Châu," Hoàng Nam called her name, his voice suddenly became unusually serious, causing her to turn to look at him with curious eyes. "I think it's time to finish the unfinished story from last night."

Bảo Châu's heart beat faster, realizing that the moment they had both secretly been waiting for had finally arrived. "I'm listening," she said softly.

Hoàng Nam took a deep breath, his eyes firmly looking straight at her. "From the first day you stepped into this factory, I treated you unfairly, just because I was afraid of change, afraid of letting a new person enter the space I had built for so many years. But you proved to me that sometimes the things you fear the most are the things you need the most."

He paused for a moment, as if gathering enough courage to continue. "You taught me how to see the world through a different lens — not just the numbers and dry technical formulas, but also the beauty and emotions hidden in the smallest details. You were by my side through the most difficult times, patiently waited when I tried to push you away, gave me the courage to face my own family. And I realized, I'm not only grateful to you for all of that."

"So what else?" Bảo Châu asked, her voice shaking with excitement, even though in her heart she already guessed the answer.

"Because I love you," Hoàng Nam said, his voice firm, without any hesitation. "It's not just the gratitude of a teammate, but true love, which has been silently growing in my heart for a long time, perhaps since the very first afternoon when you sat sketching at your desk, asking me about the shape of the robot."

Tears suddenly rose in the corners of Bảo Châu's eyes, not because of sadness, but because of an overwhelming happiness that she could not contain. "I love you too," she replied, her voice choked but sincere. "I've loved you for a long time, I just don't dare to name that feeling for sure, I'm afraid I'm just imagining things."

Hoàng Nam looked at her, his eyes filled with an indescribable happiness, then slowly raised his hand, gently caressing her cheek, wiping away the tears that had just rolled down. "Can I..." he began, his voice hesitant but his eyes steady.

Bảo Châu didn't wait for him to finish her sentence, just nodded slightly, and in that moment, amidst the late afternoon sunlight that dyed the whole factory yellow, amidst the tools, technical drawings, and the robot named Đức standing silently witnessing, the two of them finally closed the remaining distance, a gentle, sincere kiss, marking the feelings that had silently grown throughout a tumultuous school year.

When they separated, they were both smiling, not needing to say anything else to fully express the emotions filling their hearts. Hoàng Nam hugged her, resting his chin on the top of her head. They both stood there for a long time, enjoying a rare moment of peace before entering the biggest challenge of the whole journey.

"Tomorrow, we will enter the biggest battle together," Hoàng Nam said softly, his voice full of confidence. "But no matter the outcome, I know one thing for sure — I have gained the most precious thing."

"What is it?" Bảo Châu asked, looking up at him.

"It's you," he replied, without hesitation, making her heart flutter once again at that simple sincerity. "And a team that trusts and loves each other enough to overcome all difficulties together. That is true victory, regardless of the final scorecard in the final round."

Bảo Châu rested her head on her chest, listening to her steady heartbeat and feeling a profound peace that she had never experienced during the past tumultuous school year. Tomorrow, they would leave for the national finals, bringing the robot Đức, the strong friendship forged through many challenges, and now a sincere love that had just been confirmed—ready to write the next chapter of the story they had built together, little by little, during those hard-working afternoons in the small workshop.

On the way home that night, Bảo Châu couldn't help but call Thục Hiền immediately, her voice chirping with excitement as she told her everything that had just happened. On the other end of the line, Thục Hiền let out a loud scream of joy, causing Bảo Châu to hold the phone a little farther from her ear.

"IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING!" Thục Hiền shouted, her voice unable to hide her extreme excitement. "I've been waiting for this news since you told me about the silver paint on his hand! Congratulations, Chau. He really deserves you, and you also deserve this happiness."

"Thank you," Bảo Châu replied, her smile unable to be hidden even though she was talking on the phone. "Thank you for always being by my side and listening to me throughout this turbulent school year."

"That's a close friend's job," Thục Hiền replied with a smile. "Now let's focus on the finals tomorrow. I will watch via livestream, cheering hard for the whole team, especially for the two of you."

Returning home, Bảo Châu lay down on the bed, looking up at the ceiling with an indelible smile on her lips. She opened her sketchbook, flipped to a blank page, and began drawing this afternoon's moment — two silhouettes standing side by side in the late afternoon sunlight, a robot named Đức standing quietly behind, witnessing the most memorable moment of their long journey.

She looked back at the completed drawing, then closed the notebook and placed it on the desk next to the backpack that was prepared for tomorrow's trip. Outside the window, the night sky was clear, dotted with sparkling stars, as if silently blessing the team's upcoming journey. Bảo Châu closed her eyes, her heart filled with an unprecedented peace and hope, ready to welcome whatever was waiting ahead, because she knew, no matter the outcome, she would not have to face it alone.

Before falling asleep, her phone lit up one last time, it was a text message from Hoàng Nam. "Good night, my Đức. I'll see you at the bus station tomorrow morning, ready for the next chapter." Bảo Châu laughed softly at that unexpectedly lovely nickname, typed a few lines of affectionate response, then put down the phone, fell asleep with a satisfied smile on her lips, her heart filled with excitement waiting for tomorrow's dawn, the day that marked the beginning of the final, most important journey of a long journey full of tears, sweat, and now, the sincere love that she had never dared to dream of when she first reluctantly stepped into that small factory.
