Chapter 14 — The Machine of Dreams

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

The next morning, the gym was bustling with the tense atmosphere of the decisive match day. The knockout round divided the teams according to the rankings from the previous day. Any team that lost would be eliminated immediately, with no chance to recover as in the group stage. Lê Quý Đôn's team, ranked third in its group, faced the second-ranked team from another school in the first match of the knockout round.

"Let's take a deep breath," Mr. Vinh said, placing his hand on each member's shoulder as the team gathered in the waiting area, looking at the countdown clock displayed on the large screen of the gym. "You guys have prepared well enough. Now you just need to believe in yourselves and each other."

The first match of the day was tense from the first second. The opponent had a robot with superior movement speed, quickly gaining a score advantage in the first seconds. But Lê Quý Đôn's team did not waver, taking advantage of the stability when climbing to gradually narrow the gap. At the last second, team Lê Quý Đôn's robot completed the task of scoring the highest score right at the end of the clock, winning with a difference of only three points.

The whole team hugged each other in celebration, cheers echoed throughout the stands for Lê Quý Đôn's team, where a small group of parents and friends who came to cheer also stood up and applauded endlessly.

"Just one more match," Hoàng Nam said, his voice shaking with excitement and nervousness. "Winning this match will go straight to the regional semi-finals."

The second match of the knockout round took place after a short lunch break. This time the opponent was a strong team with impressive results from the beginning of the tournament. The entire Lê Quý Đôn team concentrated intensely in the preparation area, checking every detail one last time before entering the decisive match.

The match was more dramatic than any previous match. Both robots continuously struggled for scores, each time they took the lead the other quickly caught up. In the final seconds, when the score was still tight, Lê Quý Đôn's team's robot successfully performed the final hill climbing challenge - thanks to the center of gravity adjustment solution that Bảo Châu had proposed many weeks ago - scoring another decisive score right before the time-out buzzer sounded.

The gymnasium burst into cheers when the scoreboard displayed the final result: Lê Quý Đôn's team won, officially reaching the regional semi-finals - the club's best achievement in the past three years.

"We did it!" Tấn Phát shouted, jumped up and hugged Đức, both of them laughing endlessly. Bảo Châu turned to Hoàng Nam and saw him standing there, his eyes red with emotion, a rare expression that she had never seen in the club president who always remained calm and controlled.

"Are you okay?" she asked, gently touching his hand.

"I..." Hoàng Nam choked his voice, trying to suppress his surging emotions. "I don't think we can really do it. After last year, I thought..." he didn't finish his sentence, just shook his head, a shaky but genuine smile appearing on his lips.

Bảo Châu, without thinking much, hugged him in the joy of the whole team, and this time, neither of them was in a hurry to let go like last time. They stood there for a long time, amid the noise of the arena, enjoying the memorable moment of victory that they had worked so hard to achieve together.

That evening, to celebrate their achievement of reaching the semifinals, the whole team and Teacher Vinh walked along the riverbank near the hotel, enjoying cool glasses of sugarcane juice purchased from a roadside cart. The bustling atmosphere of the city at night, with lights from high-rise buildings shimmering on the water, created a scene that made Bảo Châu unable to resist recording it in her drawings.

After the group gradually dispersed to take souvenir photos, Bảo Châu found a quiet corner on the embankment, sat down, took out her sketchbook, and began quickly drawing the scene before her. Hoàng Nam, after a while of searching, also came and sat down next to her, silently observing the pencil strokes gliding quickly on the page.

"You draw really well," he said softly, after a comfortable silence.

"Thank you," Bảo Châu replied, without stopping. "I want to keep this moment. It feels like today is a day I will remember forever."

"Me too," Hoàng Nam said, looking up at the rare night sky not covered by clouds, revealing a few sparkling stars amidst the city lights. "Thank you, Bảo Châu. Really thank you. Not only for your technical or design contributions, but because... you made this journey memorable in a way I never thought of before."

Bảo Châu stopped drawing, turned to look at him, and saw her sincere, warm eyes watching her under the dim streetlights. There was something in the air between them now—the stillness after a long, emotional day, the shimmering light reflecting off the river, and the closeness that had quietly grown over the past months—that made the moment more special than anything she had ever experienced.

"Thank you too," she said softly, her voice trembling slightly from an emotion that was hard to name. "For giving me a chance, even though I originally came here because I was forced."

Hoàng Nam laughed lightly at the reminder of that early memory. “I owe you an apology for my initial unwelcoming attitude,” he said. "But looking back now, I think it was one of the luckiest decisions I've ever made, even though it wasn't my proactive choice."

They both laughed, the laughter mixed with the bustling atmosphere of the city at night, but in Bảo Châu's heart, she knew clearly that this quiet moment, shared between the two of them alone, had a much deeper meaning than victory on the afternoon's playing field. That was the moment she realized, more clearly and firmly than ever, that her feelings for Hoàng Nam had gone beyond the boundaries of a simple team relationship, even though neither of them was brave enough to name it out loud.

"Hey, are you two hiding here?" Tấn Phát's voice rang out from behind, accompanied by the sound of the group's footsteps approaching. "We kept looking, thinking you two were lost."

"Just admiring the scenery," Bảo Châu quickly closed the sketchbook, even though her cheeks were still pink from the conversation just now.

"What kind of scene did you see that made your face so red?" Tấn Phát narrowed his eyes teasingly, but this time no one bothered to deny it further, just laughed it off. Đức gave each person an ice cream he had just bought, the whole group sat around on the embankment, continuing to chat excitedly about the day's match, about the tactics that needed to be adjusted for the upcoming semi-finals, and about all sorts of other trivial things that made the atmosphere warm and close, like a family gathering rather than a competing team.

Teacher Vinh, sitting a little apart to observe his students, called the school board to report the good news, his proud voice ringing clearly in the quiet atmosphere of the evening. "Yes, the team has reached the regional semi-finals... That's right, the best achievement in the past three years... Thank you, principal, for your trust."

Hearing that conversation, Bảo Châu suddenly realized the true importance of what the team had just achieved—not only the personal joy of each member, but also the vital hope for the whole club, for the future of a place in which countless generations of students had found, and would continue to find, themselves, the same way she did.

When the group stood up and prepared to return to the hotel to rest to prepare their strength for the upcoming semi-final competition day, Hoàng Nam lingered a bit, waiting for Bảo Châu to finish packing up her drawing supplies before walking together behind the group, keeping a sufficient distance to be able to chat privately without anyone noticing.

"Tomorrow will be much more difficult," he said, his voice returning to some of its familiar seriousness, but this time it no longer carried the same nervous tension as before, but a calm determination. "But no matter the outcome, I want you to know that, for me, this journey has been a success, regardless of tomorrow's semi-finals."

"I think so too," Bảo Châu replied, smiling at him under the dim streetlight, clearly feeling a warm, strong connection quietly growing between the two, far beyond what a robot battle could bring.

They walked slowly on the riverside path, not in a hurry to catch up with the group ahead, enjoying a few rare minutes of peace in the middle of a long, emotional day. The cool night wind blew through, carrying the scent of river water and the fragrant scent of street food from roadside shops, creating a warm, strangely familiar atmosphere, even though the two were nearly two hours away from home. Bảo Châu thought to herself, perhaps home was not really a fixed location, but sometimes it was simply a feeling of safety when being with people you trust, no matter where you were.
