Chapter 29
Chapter 29 — The Machine of Dreams
When the school bus entered the gate of Lê Quý Đôn school, the whole team could not help but be surprised by the scene that greeted them - almost all students and teachers gathered in the school yard, holding banners, balloons, and handwritten signs congratulating the Robotics Club's historic achievements. Applause and cheers rang out loudly when the whole team got off the bus, carrying the Đức robot along with the bronze medal and design award certificate.
"We're famous," Tấn Phát grinned, raising both hands to wave to the cheering crowd, fully enjoying this rare moment of glory.
The principal personally came out to shake hands with each member, announced that he would hold an official honor ceremony next week, and confirmed that the investment in upgrading the factory had been approved. Reporters from the local educational television station were also present to interview the team, especially interested in the story behind the special design award that Bảo Châu had just won.
"What inspired your design?" a young reporter asked, pointing the microphone at Bảo Châu, making her a bit embarrassed in front of the camera lens.
"I think..." she hesitated for a moment before finding the most sincere answer. "I used to think I had no place in the world of science and technology, because I was always weak in Physics, always had low self-esteem when compared to my friends who were good at Math. But I realized that sometimes the greatest value I bring comes not from trying to be like others, but from daring to be myself, bringing what I'm best at - like painting - into a field that seems completely unfamiliar."
That answer, broadcast on the news that evening, received sympathy from many viewers, especially students who had low self-esteem about their own abilities in areas that were not their strengths. A few days later, Bảo Châu started receiving messages from other school students, even some younger ones, sharing that her story had inspired them to boldly try new things.
The next few months passed quickly in the cycle of studying for graduation exams and university admission, the most important stage of the senior year. Despite being busy, Hoàng Nam still maintained regular club activities, now with more dedicated support from his parents - doctor Dinh Quang Hai even suggested connecting the club with a few colleagues working in the field of biomedical engineering, opening up a new direction that Hoàng Nam had never thought of before.
"Have you considered Biomedical Engineering?" his father asked one evening, when the whole family sat down to eat, a question that a few months ago maybe Hoàng Nam would have received with caution, but now, he only felt sincere curiosity.
"What is that industry?" he asked again, truly concerned.
"It's a field that combines mechanical engineering, electronics, and medicine," his father explained, his tone unusually excited. "Designing medical devices, prosthetic limbs, surgical robots that assist doctors. I think that might be an interesting intersection between your passion and... maybe a little family tradition."
Hoàng Nam sat quietly for a moment, feeling that this was not an imposition like before, but a sincere proposal, an effort from the parents to find common ground between their desires and their son's true passion. He spent many nights afterward learning about this field of study, and realized that it really excited him — not because it was a compromise, but because it opened up a way for him to pursue his love of robotics while creating practical values for people, close to the spirit of medical ethics that his parents always valued.
In the end, Hoàng Nam decided to enroll in Biomedical Engineering at a large technical university in the city, while Bảo Châu, after many nights of thinking and talking with him, decided to pursue Industrial Design—a field that allowed her to fully combine her artistic talent with her newfound passion for designing products that were both beautiful and functional—at a university just a few bus stops away from Hoàng Nam's school.
"So we will still be in the same city," Bảo Châu told Hoàng Nam when they both reviewed the announced admission results, unable to hide the joy in their voice.
"I've been hoping for that since I chose my wish," Hoàng Nam confessed, smiling and holding her hand. "I can't imagine being away from you after everything we've been through together."
Graduation day took place on a sunny morning at the end of May, Lê Quý Đôn school yard was filled with shadows of graduation caps thrown into the sky amidst the cheers of an entire generation of students closing the final chapter of the white shirt era. Bảo Châu stood in the middle of the line of classmates, looking for the eyes of Hoàng Nam who was standing on the opposite side for the other class, the two exchanged a warm smile across the distance.
After the ceremony, Mr. Vinh gathered all members of the Robotics Club one last time before they officially graduated, holding a small farewell party right at the factory—a place that had witnessed many memories, ups and downs of a long journey. He gave each person a small souvenir. As for Bảo Châu and Hoàng Nam, he gave an enlarged, solemnly framed photo of the team with the robot Đức at the national finals.
"I've been teaching for many years," he said, his voice emotional as he looked around at the faces that had become as familiar as his own children and grandchildren. "But this is one of the student teams that makes me most proud. Not only because of the achievements they have achieved, but because of the way they have grown, learned how to trust each other, how to turn difficulties into opportunities. No matter where they go or what they do in the future, I believe they will always carry that spirit."
Bảo Châu looked around the small factory, where she had once entered reluctantly, full of self-doubt, and which was now filled with immeasurably precious memories. She knew that, even though the door of her student days was about to close, what she had learned here—about self-worth, love, and the courage to be herself—would forever accompany her on every journey ahead.
Tấn Phát, who had decided to enroll in Computer Science, stood up and suggested something that the whole group immediately responded to. "We can't let the club stop just because we graduate," he said, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "I think we should go back to being informal mentors for the junior generation, at least for the first year, to make sure what we've built doesn't get lost."
"That's a good idea," Đức agreed. He decided to study Mechanical Engineering, planning to continue working in the field of robotics in the future. "After all, the juniors also need someone to guide them on how to maintain the Đức robot. We can't let it be abandoned after we leave."
Teacher Vinh smiled and nodded in agreement. "I very much welcome that. The door of this workshop will always be open to welcome you, whether you are still a student at the school or not."
That afternoon, before saying goodbye to return home to prepare for the new turning points of life, the whole team took one last photogether with the Đức robot, a bright smile on each face as they went through a tumultuous school year together, from the initial collisions, the seemingly irreparable rifts, to the glory of the national finals and now a moment of farewell full of nostalgia but also full of hope for the new chapters about to open.
Bảo Châu held Hoàng Nam's hand tightly as they both walked out of the school gate for the last time as students, the late afternoon sunlight dyed the familiar road that she had cycled through countless times during the past school year. "Thank you for walking this journey with me," she said softly.
"This is just the beginning," Hoàng Nam replied, squeezing her hand, his eyes full of hope looking forward to the next chapters of their lives, now no longer two separate individuals, but a journey written together, with countless new dreams waiting ahead.
They stopped for a moment at the school gate, looking back one last time at the sign with the name "Lê Quý Đôn High School" that had been with them throughout their most memorable youth years. In the distance, the row of manufacturing factories still stood quietly in the sunset, like a silent witness to everything that had happened - from a girl who reluctantly entered because of mandatory regulations, to a sincere love built through every screw, every technical drawing, every sleepless night together fighting for a common dream.
"There's still a lot to do this summer," Bảo Châu said, smiling as she thought of the days ahead — preparing admission documents, arranging rooms near each other in the city, and continuing to visit the club to guide the junior generation before officially entering student life.
"But this time," Hoàng Nam said, taking her shoulder as they both walked on the familiar path, "we will face all new challenges together, not alone anymore."
