Chapter 7 — The Machine of Dreams

The problem appeared on a Tuesday afternoon, when the team was testing the robot's ability to climb hills on an inclined track that mimicked the parameters of the official competition field. According to that year's regulations, the robot had to overcome a thirty-degree slope to reach the highest-scoring area—a new challenge that the organizers had introduced to make things difficult for the competing teams.

"I slipped again," Đức sighed, watching the robot roll halfway down the slope and then slide back to the starting point, the rubber wheels spinning helplessly without finding a grip. This was the seventh attempt that afternoon, and the team began to show signs of fatigue and disappointment on their faces.

"Increasing the engine capacity will probably solve the problem," Tấn Phát suggested, typing a few lines of command to adjust the parameters. But when tried again, the robot only rolled a little faster before sliding more violently, even nearly toppling over in the middle of the slope.

"It's not a matter of capacity," Hoàng Nam said, his voice tense, kneeling down to carefully examine the wheel. "It's because of the center of gravity. With the current design, the center of gravity is too high and too backward, causing the front wheels to not have enough traction when climbing hills."

"So we have to lower the center of gravity," Đức said. "But how can we avoid having to redesign the entire chassis from scratch? We don't have enough time for that."

The whole group fell into heavy silence, looking at the robot lying motionless in the middle of the test ramp, each person lost in their own thoughts to find a solution. Hoàng Nam stood up, walked back and forth in front of the whiteboard, holding a felt-tip pen but had not written anything. His expression became more and more tense as time passed and the problem still remained unsolved.

Bảo Châu sat at a familiar corner of the table, observing the discussion without daring to intervene because she felt that this was a purely technical issue, beyond her expertise. But when looking at the drawing of the robot frame on the table, a thought suddenly flashed in her mind, stemming from a still life drawing lesson not long ago, when the art teacher lectured on the principle of visual balance in sculpture.

"Um... I have an idea, but I'm not sure if it's technically possible," she said, her voice a bit timid.

The whole group turned to look at her, and despite some hesitation, Bảo Châu continued. "Instead of redesigning the entire frame, why don't we move the heaviest parts — like the battery and main motor — a little lower and forward, like how someone adds a lead block to the bottom of a statue to keep it standing? No need to change the frame structure, just rearrange the position of the internal parts."

Hoàng Nam paused, stared at her for a few seconds, then turned sharply to the technical drawing, quickly flipping through the pages to find a diagram of the arrangement of components inside the chassis. "Wait," he muttered, his expression slowly brightening. "The battery is currently located at the top rear, accounting for most of the overall weight. If moved to the bottom of the frame, front..."

He quickly sketched the diagram on the whiteboard, calculating the numbers at a speed that overwhelmed Bảo Châu even though she didn't understand all the symbols she wrote. After a few tense minutes, Hoàng Nam put down his pen, turned back to look at the group, a rare but excited smile appeared on his face.

“It will work,” he said, his voice unable to hide his excitement. "According to calculations, if we move the battery and main motor to the bottom of the frame, moving forward about five centimeters, the center of gravity will be lowered enough to increase the traction of the front wheel by nearly forty percent. There is no need to redesign the frame, just disassemble and reposition the internal components."

"Hey, why didn't we think of such a simple thing sooner?" Đức exclaimed, both confused and relieved.

"Because we always look at the problem from a purely technical perspective," Hoàng Nam replied, his eyes still fixed on Bảo Châu with obvious admiration. "Bảo Châu looked at it from the perspective of visual balance, and it turned out that was exactly the physics principle she needed."

The whole team immediately began dismantling and reassembling components according to the new diagram. Three hours later, when the robot was returned to the test ramp, everyone held their breath watching every inch it moved. This time, the wheels firmly stuck to the surface, the robot slowly but steadily climbed the thirty-degree slope, reaching its destination smoothly without any problems.

The whole factory burst into cheers. Tấn Phát jumped up and down in celebration, while Đức clapped his hands loudly, his face beaming with rare radiance. Bảo Châu stood there, still in shock that her sudden idea could actually solve such a difficult technical problem.

"You just saved the whole team," Hoàng Nam said, walking closer to her, his eyes sparkling in an unusual way. "If we don't solve this climbing problem before the regional qualifiers, we will almost certainly lose points in the most important challenge."

"I just happened to remember a drawing lesson," Bảo Châu replied, trying to keep her voice humble even though an indescribable pride was rising in her heart.

"Accidental or not, it's up to you to think of," Hoàng Nam affirmed, his voice firm. "I have read countless technical documents about robots, but there has never been any document that taught me to look at the problem that way."

That evening, when teacher Vinh stopped by to check on the progress of preparations before leaving, he heard Tấn Phát excitedly tell the whole story, unable to hide his proud smile. "I told you so," he said, patting Bảo Châu's shoulder. "A good team not only needs people who are good at calculations, but also needs people who know how to look at problems from a completely different perspective. You are that piece of our team, Bảo Châu."

That compliment, combined with Hoàng Nam's admiring eyes throughout that afternoon, made Bảo Châu feel a new kind of confidence that she had never felt in all her previous school years - not confidence based on grades or academic achievements, but belief in the true value of the unique ability she possessed, even though it had nothing to do with the numbers on the Physics test.

On the bike ride home, Bảo Châu couldn't hold back the smile that appeared on her lips the whole way. She thought about Hoàng Nam's eyes just now - not only admiration for a talented teammate, but also something warmer, closer, making her heart beat in a completely new rhythm. She wondered if he noticed how his own eyes changed every time he looked at her, or if it was just something she imagined in the excitement of a successful day.

From that day on, something silently changed in the way the team treated Bảo Châu. No one anymore politely called her "the friend in charge of design" like before, but instead, people began to proactively ask her opinion on almost every decision, from big things like the layout of the center of gravity to small details like how the color of the wires should be coordinated so that it's easy to distinguish and doesn't confuse the overall look. She realized her role on the team had gradually expanded beyond that of a "shell artist" as originally defined, to become a true contributor to how the robot was envisioned and operated.

Teacher Vinh, in the final meeting the following week, even proposed a small change in the team's official division of roles. "I think we should call Bảo Châu's position 'Overall design and visual experience' instead of simply 'outer shell design'," she said, taking notes in the familiar notebook she always carried with him. "Because clearly your contribution has gone much beyond that initial name."

The whole team applauded, and Bảo Châu felt her cheeks heat up with both embarrassment and pride. She glanced at Hoàng Nam, saw that he was also looking at her, the corner of his lips curled up into a small smile that only she could recognize the full meaning behind it - a silent recognition, more sincere than any verbal compliment.

That evening, while drawing a more complete version of the lower frame with the adjusted center of gravity, Bảo Châu suddenly realized that she was whistling without even realizing it, something she only did when she really felt happy and at peace with the work she was doing. She looked back at the journey she had gone through since the first day she reluctantly stepped into the factory, and couldn't help but be surprised at the great change that had taken place in her heart, silently but surely, like the way a machine was gradually perfected through each small screw being tightened in the right place.
