Chapter 24
Chapter 24 — The Machine of Dreams
Three days before leaving for the national finals, the team decided to hold one last overnight rehearsal — running through the entire series of competition missions dozens of times, simulating every possible situation, to make sure the robot, and the team's spirit, was ready in the best possible state.
Teacher Vinh asked the school board for special permission to allow the team to stay at school overnight, with his own supervision and school security. Parents of each member were also informed and gave their consent, understanding the importance of this final rehearsal before the decisive competition day.
"Tonight, we will run exactly fifty complete trials," Hoàng Nam announced when the whole team gathered at seven o'clock in the evening, his eyes filled with determination but no longer with the haunted tension of previous weeks. "Not because I think anything will break, but because I want us to be so familiar that we can handle any unexpected situation naturally, without thinking."
The whole team got to work with excitement, mixed with a little nervousness before the most important competition day of the school year. The first hours passed smoothly, the robot completed each series of tasks with increasing precision, the new spindle worked stably without any signs of trouble.
Around midnight, after completing more than thirty trials, the team began to feel tired. Teacher Vinh suggested taking turns resting in shifts, with each person taking turns taking a nap for about an hour on the chairs he had prepared in advance, while the rest continued to supervise the tests.
When Tấn Phát and Đức's off shift came, only Bảo Châu and Hoàng Nam remained in the factory, with the sound of robots running tests regularly in the quiet space of late at night. Fluorescent lights cast down, creating a quiet, cozy atmosphere, different from the bustle of the day.
"Are you tired?" Bảo Châu asked, sitting down next to Hoàng Nam on the couch, observing the robot making its thirty-fourth test run.
"Yes, but in a good way," he replied, smiling slightly. "Tired because I tried my best, not tired because of worry or fear like before."
"I like that difference," Bảo Châu said, resting her head lightly on her shoulder, a gesture so natural that neither of them felt as awkward as the first time they were close before.
They sat silently together for a long time, only the gentle sound of the robot engine echoed in the quiet space. Bảo Châu looked around the factory - the place she once entered with reluctance and resentment, now filled with precious memories that cannot be measured by any other measure than her own heart.
"I remember the first day I walked in here," she said softly, her voice full of nostalgia. "I still clearly remember the feeling of being lost and scared when I saw piles of components, wires everywhere, and the not-so-welcoming attitude of a certain club leader."
Hoàng Nam laughed lightly at that reminder. “I owe you a big apology for that,” he said. "I treated you unfairly from the beginning, just because I underestimated what you could bring."
"You've redeemed yourself enough," Bảo Châu replied with a smile, raising her head to look at him. "Look how far we've come. From two strangers, now..."
She paused, not sure what to call their current relationship, even though they both clearly felt the deep bond that had formed over the past months.
"What is this now?" Hoàng Nam asked, his voice gentle but containing a sincere curiosity. His eyes looked at her under the dim factory lights, containing something deeper than ordinary team friendship.
Bảo Châu felt her heart beat faster, realizing that this moment could be an important turning point, but before she could answer, the alarm on the computer rang, announcing that the thirty-fifth test run had begun, pulling them both back to the reality of unfinished work.
"Later," Hoàng Nam said, a knowing smile flashed across his lips, as if he also felt the unfinishedness of the moment and didn't want to let it pass without a complete ending. "I think there are questions that deserve to be answered at the right time, not hastily in the middle of an all-night rehearsal."
They both returned to focusing on their work, but the air between them had taken on a new, expectant tone, as if they both implicitly understood that something important was waiting to be said, just not yet.
At nearly four o'clock in the morning, when the whole team had completed fifty trials with an almost absolute success rate, everyone gathered, exhausted but full of pride. Teacher Vinh looked at the robot standing firmly on the table, the factory lights reflecting on the sparkling navy blue and silver shell, unable to hide his emotions.
"I've never seen a team prepare so thoroughly in my four years as a club advisor," he said, his voice choked up. "No matter what the results are in the national finals, you deserve to be proud of what you have accomplished."
The whole team hugged each other in tired but sincere happiness, and when the first dawn light began to filter through the factory window, dyeing the whole space in a warm golden color, Bảo Châu looked around at the dear faces that had accompanied her through a long, challenging but also meaningful journey, feeling her heart filled with a deep gratitude that she had never felt so clearly before, for the whole Robotics Club, and for the boy standing next to her, who had helped her. She went through many ups and downs to get to this moment.
Teacher Vinh allowed the whole team to rest on site for another hour before parents came to pick them up early in the morning. Tấn Phát and Đức, exhausted after a long night, quickly leaned back on the sofa to sleep again, soft snores mixed with the sound of birds singing outside the window signaling the beginning of a new day. Bảo Châu, although equally tired, felt too excited to take a nap, so she decided to go out into the hallway to breathe the fresh morning air.
Hoàng Nam followed her out, the two stood leaning against the hallway railing, looking at the sunlight slowly rising towards the horizon, dyeing the sky in a brilliant orange-pink color. The schoolyard was quiet in that early morning hour, with only the chirping of birds in the old poinciana trees, bringing a rare feeling of peace after a long, stressful night.
"Just now, before being interrupted," Hoàng Nam said, breaking the silence. His voice was a bit hesitant but his eyes still steadfastly looked towards her. "What are you going to say about us 'what now'?"
Bảo Châu felt her cheeks heat up, unexpectedly she still remembered and wanted to return to that unfinished story. "I... I'm not sure how to describe it," she admitted, looking down at her hands gripping the railing. "It's just, I feel like what's going on between us has gone beyond just a normal team relationship, a long time ago."
"I feel the same way," Hoàng Nam said softly, turning completely to face her, his eyes filled with deep sincerity under the increasingly brighter morning sunlight. "Actually, I've felt that way for a long time, maybe since the day you accidentally spilled paint on my hand."
Bảo Châu laughed lightly at that memory, the feeling of embarrassment gradually disappeared, giving way to a warmth spreading throughout her chest. “So it was a long time ago,” she said, looking up at him.
The space between the two people seemed to narrow, with only the sound of birds singing and the morning sunlight bearing witness to the important moment that was gradually taking shape. But at that moment, the alarm bell on Tấn Phát's phone rang out from inside the workshop, accompanied by his sleepy voice calling them both in to prepare for the parents to pick them up.
The two laughed at the timely interruption again, but this time, instead of feeling regret, Bảo Châu only felt a warm certainty that, even though they hadn't fully said it out loud, they both understood each other's hearts, and the moment to officially name that feeling would come, sooner or later, when both were ready.
"Let's come in," Hoàng Nam said, holding out his hand as a natural invitation, and Bảo Châu took it without hesitation. They both walked back into the factory under the early morning sunlight, their hands still clasped together throughout that short walk, like a silent promise for what was still waiting ahead.
When parents came to pick up each member one by one, teacher Vinh stood at the workshop gate, sending each child off with a satisfied smile. "Let's meet again at the school bus stop at six in the morning," he reminded, his voice full of hope. "Rest well, regain your strength, so we can be ready for the biggest battle."
Bảo Châu cycled home in the pristine early morning, her body exhausted from lack of sleep but her heart filled with an indescribable warm energy. She thought about Hoàng Nam's hand holding hers tightly, about the unfinished story between the two of them that was still waiting to be completed, and about the three short days left before the team set off to face the biggest challenge of the whole journey - not only the national finals, but also the opportunity for her and Hoàng Nam to finally fully name what had silently grown between the two of them throughout this tumultuous school year.
