Chapter 28
Chapter 28 — The Machine of Dreams
The third-place match took place at nine o'clock in the morning, before the official final began in the afternoon. Lê Quý Đôn's team's opponent was a team from a school in the Central region, which had also just lost narrowly in the other semifinal. Both teams entered the match with a much lighter mindset compared to the suffocating pressure of the previous day—with nothing left to lose, only the desire to end the journey with a worthy victory.
"This is the last match of the season," Hoàng Nam told the team before the match, his voice filled with determination but without any haunting tension like the first days of the season. "Regardless of the result, I want us to compete with all the best we have, so that there are no regrets."
The match took place in a relaxed but no less fierce spirit. The Đức robot, after a night of rest and final minor adjustments, operates smoother than ever, completing each task with impressive precision. By mid-match, Lê Quý Đôn's team had created a significant score gap, and although the opponent tried to chase in the last minutes, that gap was still large enough to ensure victory.
When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard displayed clearly: Lê Quý Đôn's team won, officially ranked third in the country - the best achievement in the school's Robotics Club history, far surpassing all initial expectations when the team started the season with the risk of budget cuts hanging over their heads.
The whole team burst into joy, hugging each other in the middle of the field, cheers mixed with happy tears. Teacher Vinh, standing outside the field, could not hide the tears of pride rolling down his cheeks, the image of a teacher who had silently accompanied and believed in this club throughout many difficult years, finally witnessing the most worthy results.
"We did it!" Tấn Phát shouted, his voice almost cracking with excitement, lifting Đức up and spinning around amid the cheers of the whole team.
The award ceremony took place immediately afterward, with representatives of the organizing committee awarding the bronze medal to team Lê Quý Đôn in front of the entire audience. When the school's name was announced, the whole team stepped up to the podium to receive the award. Flash lights from local press reporters and educational television continuously flashed, recording the club's historic moment.
In addition to the bronze medal, the organizers also announced a special award — "Best Design Award" — for the team with the most aesthetically impressive robot design that harmoniously combines with technical performance. When team name Lê Quý Đôn was announced for this award, Bảo Châu stood still for a moment, not daring to believe her ears.
"It's you," Hoàng Nam said, gently pushing her towards the stage, his eyes filled with pride. "Go up and accept the award, this is your achievement."
Bảo Châu stepped onto the podium to receive the award amid resounding applause, her hands trembling as she held the certificate, an indescribable feeling of happiness welled up in her heart. She recalls the first day she reluctantly entered the manufacturing workshop, self-conscious about her own abilities in a scientific and technical environment, and now, standing on the biggest stage of the national school robotics competition, being officially recognized for her unique aesthetic contributions.
In the afternoon, the whole team watched the final match between Bảo Long's Nguyễn Huệ team and the specialized school team from the capital. The match was dramatic until the last second, and in the end, Nguyễn Huệ's team won convincingly, winning the national championship for the first time after many years of trying.
"It's well deserved," Hoàng Nam said, clapping enthusiastically with the whole team as Bảo Long held up the championship trophy, his face beaming with happiness. "He's been waiting for this moment for a long time."
After the closing ceremony, Bảo Long came to congratulate Lê Quý Đôn's team, unable to hide the excitement that was still intact after the victory. "Thank you for the semi-finals yesterday," he said, shaking Hoàng Nam's hand. "It was my toughest match of the whole tournament, and it helped me prepare better mentally for the final."
"Congratulations on the championship," Hoàng Nam replied, smiling sincerely without any jealousy. "You guys deserve that title."
That evening, when teacher Vinh received a call from the principal of Lê Quý Đôn school, announcing the good news that had spread throughout the school right after the results were announced in the media, he called the whole team together to share the most important news.
"The board of directors just announced," he said, his voice filled with emotion, "with a third-place finish nationwide and the Best Design award, the Robotics Club is officially guaranteed an operating budget for at least the next three years, along with an additional investment to upgrade factory equipment. You guys have saved the club."
That news made the whole team burst into happiness once again, not only because of their individual or collective achievements, but because they had successfully protected a place that had become a second home for each person throughout this tumultuous school year - where seemingly distant dreams were given wings to fly, just like the name that Bảo Châu had given to the team's robot.
To celebrate, teacher Vinh led the whole team to a small restaurant near the hotel, ordering a sumptuous banquet that the whole group rarely enjoyed together. After hearing the news, Hoàng Nam's parents also stopped by to attend, and for the first time, Bảo Châu witnessed the sight of doctor Dinh Quang Hai smiling freely and chatting with Tấn Phát about the technical details of the robot, an image she never thought she would see when she first met him at the regional qualifier.
"I heard that you are the one who designed the outer shell," Doctor Ngoc Mai said to Bảo Châu while having a meal, her tone was friendlier than the stern first meeting. "I'm very impressed with the award you just received. I realize, perhaps I underestimated the importance of skills that are not in traditional textbooks."
"Thank you," Bảo Châu replied, smiling sincerely. "I also learned a lot from Hoàng Nam and the whole team about logical and technical thinking. Perhaps those two worlds are not as far apart as people think."
The party lasted late into the night, filled with laughter and stories recounting every memorable moment of the entire season — from the first time Bảo Châu reluctantly entered the factory, to the fateful painting of the robot with its silver streak, to the last overnight rehearsal before leaving. Each story told made the whole table laugh, and Bảo Châu felt her heart filled with an indescribable warmth as she looked around at the dear faces that had accompanied her through a long and meaningful journey.
After the party, when everyone gradually dispersed to rest and prepare for the return trip the next morning, Hoàng Nam pulled Bảo Châu out to the balcony of the restaurant, where one could see the entire city at night with shimmering lights.
"Can you believe it?" he said, his voice still a little shocked by what had just happened today. "Just a few months ago, I thought I would have to give up everything I love. Now, not only is the club saved, but my parents are also gradually understanding and accepting the path I want to take."
"I'm very proud of you," Bảo Châu said, leaning her head on her shoulder, watching the city lights shimmering in the night sky. "About everything you've overcome, both in engineering and in your own life."
"I couldn't have done it without you," Hoàng Nam replied, wrapping his arms around her, his voice full of affection. "Thank you, for coming into my life, even though it was completely reluctant at first."
The two stood there for a long time, enjoying a rare moment of peace after a long, emotional day, filled with pride and happiness for what they had achieved together — not just a bronze medal or a design award, but a journey of growth and connection that had transformed them both in the most profound ways that no competition could ever fully measure.
The next morning, before getting on the bus to return to school, the whole team gathered to take a commemorative photo with the Đức robot, the bronze medal and certificate of merit for the Best Design award were solemnly placed in front. Teacher Vinh stood in the middle, his hands on Hoàng Nam and Bảo Châu's shoulders, his bright smile could not hide the pride of a teacher who trusted and accompanied his students throughout a long and arduous journey.
On the bus back, Bảo Châu sat next to the window with her head resting lightly on Hoàng Nam's shoulder. She watched the scenery pass outside, her heart filled with a deep sense of satisfaction. She thought about the journey she had taken — from a reluctant, self-conscious girl entering an unfamiliar world, to a recognized member, to someone who had found true love, and above all, to someone who had learned that her value did not lie in fitting into existing stereotypes, but in daring to be herself, no matter how different that path was from what others expected.
