Chapter 9
Chapter 9 — The Machine of Dreams
Two weeks before the regional qualifiers, the robot's frame and programming were finally stable, leaving only the final step of finishing the top coat - a job that Bảo Châu had long been looking forward to, because this was when her paper design truly transformed into a vivid, colorful form.
"The main color will be navy blue with silver, just like the original sketch," she announced to the team in a Saturday afternoon meeting, pointing to the color palette she had prepared. "The wings will have a gradient effect from dark to light, creating a feeling of movement even when the robot is stationary."
"That sounds complicated," Đức commented, looking at the color palette with some skepticism. "Can you do it all by yourself?"
"Definitely not," Bảo Châu laughed. "This is why I need the help of the whole team. Gradient paint requires many layers of evenly sprayed hands, the more people helping, the faster this job will be."
The next Sunday afternoon, the whole team gathered at the workshop, each person was assigned a specific part of the job in the coating process. Teacher Vinh carefully covered the entire work area with a tarp, opened the windows to ensure ventilation, and gave each person a specialized mask and rubber gloves.
"Remember to let each layer dry completely before spraying the next layer," Bảo Châu advised, holding the spray paint can and showing everyone how to keep the spraying distance and angle even. "If you rush, the paint will leak, ruining all the hard work of the past few weeks."
Work went smoothly for most of the afternoon, with the music blaring from Tấn Phát's small speaker creating a more comfortable atmosphere than the usual tension in technical testing sessions. Bảo Châu moved between tables, checking and guiding each person, occasionally stopping to edit small details that she did not feel satisfied with.
Coming to the most difficult part—the gradient effect layer on the robot wings—Bảo Châu decided to undertake it herself, because this was the detail that required the highest precision in the entire design. Hoàng Nam, after completing his assigned work, stood next to her, observing with curiosity.
"Need any help?" he asked.
"Can you help me hold this wing steady? I need both hands to adjust the spray angle evenly," Bảo Châu asked, without raising her head, focusing on every centimeter of the surface.
Hoàng Nam nodded, carefully holding the plastic wing at the exact angle Bảo Châu requested, standing so close that Bảo Châu could feel the warmth from her body, even though both were highly focused on the task at hand. She tried to stay calm, her hand still moving the spray bottle in carefully calculated curves.
But while spraying the most important color transition, a loud noise suddenly rang out from Tấn Phát's desk - he accidentally knocked a stack of components onto the floor, causing a loud clicking noise that startled the whole workshop. Bảo Châu, a natural reflex, turned her head to look towards the sound, accidentally moving her hand holding the spray bottle in the wrong direction for a moment.
A streak of silver paint shot straight into Hoàng Nam's hand holding the wing, spreading into a long streak on his wrist.
"Oh no, I'm sorry!" Bảo Châu panicked, quickly put down the spray bottle, grabbed a paper towel to wipe off the paint, but the paint had already penetrated into the skin, leaving a sparkling silver streak that was difficult to erase immediately.
"It's okay," Hoàng Nam laughed, a comfortable laugh she rarely heard from him, making her look up with surprise. "It's just paint, wash it off and it'll be clean."
But when Bảo Châu bent down and carefully wiped away the remaining paint on her wrist, they both suddenly realized how close the distance between them was now - close enough for Bảo Châu to clearly see every detail on Hoàng Nam's face, from the eyebrows slightly furrowed in surprise, to the eyes staring at her with an expression she had never seen before - no longer the familiar seriousness, but something much softer, more gentle.
The surrounding space seemed to slow down, the music and conversations of other people in the workshop seemed to recede, giving way to a tense but not uncomfortable silence between the two people. Bảo Châu felt her heart beating so fast that she could almost hear the beating ringing in her ears. Her hand was still lightly holding Hoàng Nam's wrist, unwilling to let go, even though the paint had long since been wiped off.
"Bảo Châu..." Hoàng Nam softly called her name, his voice unusually low and somewhat hoarse, his eyes fixed on her as if trying to read something in her expression.
"Oh..." she replied, her voice so low it was almost a whisper, not sure what she was expecting to happen next.
But at that moment, Tấn Phát's familiar loud voice rang out from behind, mercilessly breaking that fragile moment. "Eh, what are you two doing standing so close to each other? Did something romantic just happen?" he asked, his voice full of teasing, still picking up the scattered parts on the floor.
Both Bảo Châu and Hoàng Nam were startled and stepped back, the close distance that had just disappeared immediately, replaced by confusion clearly visible on both of their faces.
"Nothing," Hoàng Nam replied quickly, his voice slightly higher than usual, turning away and pretending to check the newly painted wing. "Bảo Châu just helped me wipe off the paint stains on my hands."
"Yeah, that's all," Bảo Châu chimed in, bending down to pick up the spray paint can at an unusually fast speed, trying to hide her burning cheeks.
Tấn Phát looked at both of them with eyes that did not believe at all, a mischievous smile gradually spreading on his lips. "Oh, okay, okay, I believe," he said, his tone clearly implying the exact opposite, before turning and walking away, softly whistling a cheerful, meaningful tune.
Bảo Châu returned to her painting work, but her hands were still shaking a bit. Her mind kept returning to the moment just now—Hoàng Nam's eyes, his hoarse voice when calling her name, and the warm feeling spreading in her palm when it touched his wrist. She glanced over and saw Hoàng Nam also trying to focus on the task at hand but clearly still distracted, occasionally glancing towards her with confusion he couldn't hide.
That afternoon, although the work of finishing the robot's paint job continued smoothly until the end, the atmosphere between Bảo Châu and Hoàng Nam took on a new, subtle but undeniable nuance - a feeling of limbo between team friendship and something bigger, waiting to be called.
When the work session ended and everyone left, Bảo Châu lingered for a moment to admire the results of the long day - the robot shell was now almost completely completed, shining in navy blue mixed with silver sparkling under the factory lights, just as she had originally envisioned but even more beautiful when it actually existed before her eyes. Hoàng Nam stood next to her, also silently watching, and in that quiet moment, without needing to say another word, both of them felt a new harmony growing quietly between them, like the gradient paint layers on a robot wing - shifting smoothly, without clear boundaries, but definitely going in a completely different direction from the original starting point.
That night, when he got home, Bảo Châu lay down on the bed, phone in hand but didn't open any apps, simply looked up at the ceiling, letting her mind drift back to what happened that afternoon. She tried to analyze her feelings rationally, as she always did when faced with an important decision, but this time, all efforts to explain were useless before the chaotic beating in her chest every time she remembered Hoàng Nam's eyes at that time.
The phone vibrated, it was a text message from Thục Hiền, as usual he always knew when his best friend needed someone to confide in. "Why do you suddenly text 'I have something to tell' and then stay silent? Tell me quickly, I'm dying of curiosity."
Bảo Châu hesitated for a moment before typing the words recounting the entire incident — the streak of silver paint, the unexpected moment of intimacy, Hoàng Nam's hoarse voice calling her name. Thục Hiền's reply message arrived soon after, filled with exclamation points and excited emojis.
"OH MY GOD!!! This is clearly an important moment! Do you think she likes you too?"
Bảo Châu looked at that message for a long time, her fingers hovering over the keyboard, not knowing how to respond, because she herself did not dare to confirm anything for sure. She only knew that, since this afternoon, something between her and Hoàng Nam had silently changed, fragile but real, like a layer of primer that had just been applied, not yet completely dry, but had begun to shape a completely new color for both of them.
