Chapter 20
Chapter 20 — The Stage of the Unsaid
Gia Bach entered the club's office with shaky legs, trying to keep his face as calm as possible even though his heart was in utter chaos. Ms. Huong sat behind the desk, her eyes were serious but not harsh, signaling him to sit in the chair opposite.
"Do you know why I invited you to stay today?" she asked, her voice calm but heavy.
"I... I'm not sure, ma'am," Gia Bach replied, his voice trying to stay calm but unable to hide the trembling in each word.
Ms. Huong looked at him for a long time, her eyes filled with disappointment and complex sympathy. "The school's information technology team has completed its investigation into the cyberbullying incident targeting Kien," she said, her voice slow. "Evidence shows that the anonymous account that sent the threat logged in from the area near the computer room, right at the time I was there alone."
Gia Bach was dumbfounded, feeling like the entire world around him collapsed in that moment. He bowed his head, his hands clasped tightly on his thighs, there was no way to continue denying the truth that surrounded him.
"I..." he started, his voice choked up, tears starting to flow uncontrollably. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry for everything I've done."
That confession, although painful, also brought a strange relief to Gia Bach, as if he was finally relieved of the burden of guilt that had been weighing him down for many weeks. He told the whole story — about the family's financial pressure, about his sister's accident, about the scholarship he believed was the last chance to change the family's destiny, about his jealousy that gradually degenerated into actions that he didn't even know he could do.
Ms. Huong listened to the entire story in silence, her face gradually softening at the deep hurt hidden behind the wrong behavior of the student she had been watching for the past three years. "I understand, you had to endure great pressure," she said after Gia Bach finished speaking, her voice full of sympathy but still no less strict. "But that doesn't justify what you did. You seriously damaged the spirit of a friend, destroyed the club's common property, and threatened the mental safety of the entire team."
"I know," Gia Bach replied, his voice full of regret. "I am willing to accept any form of discipline from the school. I just hope that I can have the opportunity to apologize directly to Kien and Anh Thu before everything is officially handled."
Ms. Huong considered for a moment before nodding in agreement. "I'll arrange a meeting," she said. "But you need to mentally prepare yourself, that the consequences of your actions will be inevitable, no matter how sincere the apology."
That afternoon, when Anh Thu and Kien were called by Ms. Huong to inform them of the investigation results, both could not hide their shock at the truth that had just been revealed. Even though I once suspected Gia Bach, officially confirming it still brought an indescribable feeling of heaviness.
"He agreed to meet to apologize in person," Ms. Huong said. "I think, deciding whether to accept that apology or not, is completely up to you two."
Kien and Anh Thu looked at each other, both feeling the complexity of their own emotions — between righteous anger at what they had gone through, and a vague sympathy for the tragic circumstances behind Gia Bach's wrong actions.
"I think, I'm ready to hear his explanation," Kien said finally, his voice thoughtful. "Not because I have completely forgiven, but because I think everyone deserves a chance to explain, to take responsibility properly for their actions."
Anh Thu nodded in agreement, although his heart was still filled with many emotions that could not be neatly arranged. The meeting was scheduled for the next morning, marking an important dialogue that may decide not only Gia Bach's fate in the club, but also how the entire group will move forward together, healing the rifts that have formed, before entering the most important night of this long and turbulent journey, closing Part IV of the story in an atmosphere that is both heavy and carries hope for reconciliation and healing.
That evening, when Anh Thu told his father the whole incident, Mr. Duc Thang listened attentively, his face thoughtful. "Legally, the school has the right to impose strict discipline and even transfer the file to the authorities if desired," he said. "But I think you should consider carefully what is truly best for everyone involved, not simply the harshest possible punishment."
"I'm also thinking about that," Anh Thu replied, his voice thoughtful. "Gia Bach did something wrong, it cannot be denied. But I also understand that he acted in dire circumstances, not because of a cruel nature."
"That's a mature way of looking at things," Mr. Duc Thang said, his eyes full of pride. "Justice does not have to mean the cruelest punishment. Sometimes, the opportunity to right a wrong, if accompanied by appropriate accountability, can bring about a much better outcome for all parties."
The next morning, before the official meeting, Anh Thu and Kien had a short conversation with Ms. Huong to reach a consensus of opinion. "We don't want Gia Bach to be expelled from school or suffer serious legal consequences," Kien said, his voice sincere. "We think an appropriate form of discipline, with an opportunity for him to redeem himself, would be more meaningful."
Ms. Huong nodded, acknowledging that wish. "I will present your views to the school board," she said. "But the final decision still needs to consider the school's general regulations, as well as deterrence for similar acts in the future."
The meeting took place during recess, in the same small practice room where Kien had gradually overcome his fear over the past many months. Gia Bach walked in, his face pale, his eyes red and swollen from crying so much, standing opposite Anh Thu and Kien in heavy silence.
"I'm really sorry," he said, his voice shaking, not daring to look either of them in the eye. "No amount of apologies can make up for what I've done, but I need you to know, I truly regret all my actions."
Kien looked at him for a long time, complicated emotions mixed in his heart at that hurt face. "I have experienced feeling threatened, deeply hurt by what you did," he said, his voice still a bit stern but not lacking in sympathy. "I need time to truly forgive completely. But I believe, everyone deserves a chance to correct their mistakes, if they truly sincerely want to change."
Those words, although not yet complete forgiveness, still gave Gia Bach a fragile ray of hope in the midst of the darkest days of his life, a small beginning for the long journey ahead, where he will have to prove through his own actions that he is worthy of the chance to atone that the people he has hurt are considering giving.
After the meeting, the board of directors decided on disciplinary action against Gia Bach: suspending participation in all extracurricular activities for one semester, writing an official review before the school's disciplinary council, and having to attend periodic psychological counseling sessions to resolve the psychological pressures that led to his misconduct. The school also decided not to transfer the file to the authorities, in accordance with the wishes expressed by Anh Thu and Kien, viewing this as the last opportunity for this student to correct his mistakes and become more mature.
News of the results quickly spread throughout the club, bringing many mixed reactions. Some members believe that such a punishment is too light compared to the severity of the act, while others, especially those who have witnessed Gia Bach's entire internal struggle, feel that this is a fair decision, balancing responsibility and compassion.
"I think this is the right decision," Ngoc Diep told Anh Thu during recess, after hearing the whole story. "Not everyone deserves to have their future completely ruined because of one serious mistake, as long as they actually learn from it."
Anh Thu nodded in agreement, although he still had many things to ponder about the entire tumultuous journey. There are only three days left until the regional festival, and now, with the truth finally revealed, the whole club can focus fully on the ultimate goal — delivering a show worthy of all the efforts and sacrifices that everyone has contributed together throughout a long and challenging journey.
