Chapter 22 — The Stage of the Unsaid

Updated 22/08/2026 6 min read

The weekend before the festival, the club holds a final rehearsal — a test run of the entire play with full costumes, lights, and music, identical to the actual conditions that will take place on the festival stage. This is the last chance to detect and correct any errors before the official competition day.

The atmosphere in the hall was filled with excitement mixed with determination. After all the turmoil that has gone through - from sabotage incidents, malicious threats, to the unwanted spread of old videos - the whole club is now ready to put all their heart and soul into the most important moment of a long journey.

Kien stood backstage, wearing the German character's costume, clearly feeling his heart beating fast, but it was no longer the beat of panic like the first weeks, but the beat of excitement and readiness.

"Are you ready?" Anh Thu asked, standing next to him in a girl's character costume, his eyes full of trust.

"I think, this time, I'm really ready," Kien replied, flashing a rare confident smile.

The rehearsal went surprisingly smoothly, each scene reached the highest level of perfection since the beginning of the rehearsal process. By act five - the final climactic scene with the mother's emotional farewell - Anh Thu acted with such profound honesty that even the members who had watched this scene dozens of times couldn't hold back their tears.

As the velvet curtain closed, marking the end of the rehearsal, the entire hall burst into applause and congratulatory hugs. Ms. Huong, her eyes filled with tears of emotion, gathered the entire cast together to give a speech.

"I have worked with many generations of students over the past eight years," she said, her voice choked up, "but never in any year have I witnessed such a growth, such a strong spirit of solidarity as what you have shown throughout this season of plays. Regardless of the festival results, you deserve to be proud of yourself."

Amid those congratulations, a familiar figure appeared at the hall door - Gia Bach, despite being suspended from extracurricular activities, still asked Ms. Huong's permission to come and watch the rehearsal as an audience. He stood quietly in the last row, his eyes filled with sincere admiration and a little regret when witnessing the brilliant achievements of the whole team that he had almost destroyed.

After the show, when everyone gradually dispersed, Gia Bach timidly approached Anh Thu and Kien, holding a small box. "I know I have no right to bother you two," he said, his voice still shaking with embarrassment, "but I wanted to give this, as a sincere wish of luck for the upcoming festival."

He brought out a small gift box, inside were two handmade braided bracelets, meticulously made during the days when he was suspended, spending his free time contemplating and finding ways to atone for his mistakes in his own way.

Anh Thu and Kien looked at each other, then accepted the gift with unexpected emotion. "Thank you," Kien said, his voice sincere. "This means more than you think."

"I hope, one day, I can truly atone for my mistakes, not just with words," Gia Bach said, his eyes filled with sincerity. "Wishing you two, and the whole club, every success you deserve at the festival."

That small but meaningful moment of reconciliation, between people who once stood on opposite sides of a painful story, gave both Anh Thu and Kien a rare sense of completeness, as if all the wounds and rifts that had formed during the long journey were now gradually being healed, preparing for the final, most important chapter of the whole story.

A few hours before the rehearsal, Ngoc Diep and the costume team were busy all afternoon perfecting the final details for the entire cast's costumes. The girl character's dress, tailored specifically to Anh Thu's figure, is a simple but sophisticated light blue color, symbolizing the purity and sincerity of the character throughout the play.

"You're very beautiful," Ngoc Diep commented, adjusting the last fold on her dress, her eyes full of pride. "I've been watching you since the first day when you were timid and didn't dare step on stage. Now, seeing you so confident, I'm really touched."

"It's all thanks to everyone who has always been by my side to support me," Anh Thu replied, his voice choked with emotion at that sincere friendship.

On the other side of the hall, Duy Anh was busy doing a final check of the entire sound and lighting system, making sure everything worked perfectly without even the slightest mistake. "Everything is one hundred percent ready," he informed Ms. Huong, his voice filled with pride after weeks of non-stop work.

After the successful rehearsal and the emotional moment of reconciliation with Gia Bach, when everyone had left, Anh Thu and Kien lingered a bit in the quiet hall, looking at the empty stage together under the soft light of the soul lamp.

"You know," Anh Thu said, his voice full of thought, "when I started writing this play, I never thought it would lead me on such a tumultuous journey, with so many lessons. Not only about art, but also about myself, about how to let go, about how to love, and about how to forgive."

"Me too," Kien replied, taking her hand. "I came to this club just because I needed enough extracurricular activities. I never expected that it would become the place where I found myself again, and found you."

The two stood there in silence for a long moment, enjoying the rare moment of peace before the final storm — not a turbulent storm like what they had experienced, but a storm of suspense and anticipation on the threshold of the most important night of their school lives, only three days away.

That evening, the entire cast received official notice about the travel schedule to the regional festival venue — a large theater in the city center, nearly two hours by bus from the school. The whole club will depart early in the morning on the day of the competition, bringing with them not only all the props and costumes, but also the hopes and dreams that have been cherished during many months of preparation.

That evening, when Anh Thu returned home, she spent time rearranging her personal suitcase for the trip, carefully folding each outfit, and checking the original script that she always carried with her as an inseparable object throughout the arduous writing journey. Mr. Duc Thang entered the room, looked at his daughter who was busy preparing, his eyes filled with undisguised pride.

"I'll come see you perform," he said, his voice sincere. "Dad took a day off from work, just so he could see your results with his own eyes."

Anh Thu looked up, unable to hide his emotion at that promise. "Thank you, Dad," she said, her voice choked up. "That means a lot to me."

"I believe," he added, "no matter what the outcome of the festival, your mother, somewhere, is certainly very proud of you, just like me."

Those words made Anh Thu unable to hold back her tears, hugging her father in a rare warm moment, clearly feeling that her small family, despite experiencing painful loss, still found a way to love and support each other as fully as possible.

At the same time, at Kien's house, his parents were also busy preparing, not just their luggage, but their spirit to go together to watch the most important performance in their son's journey to adulthood. "We are so proud of you," his mother said, hugging Kien before he went to his room to rest early to preserve his strength for the upcoming important day. "No matter what tomorrow holds, you are already a victory, just by daring to stand up and face your fears."

The night before the departure, Kien lay in bed, looked up at the ceiling, reviewing the entire long and tumultuous journey he had gone through since the first day he entered the Drama Club of Dawn School - from a closed student, afraid of all stage lights, to now, a young man ready to stand firm, confidently expressing himself in front of hundreds, even thousands of strange eyes at the regional festival. He smiled in the darkness, his heart filled with peace, ready to accept whatever was waiting ahead, closing Part V of the story in the most complete hope and preparation for the final, most important performance of a long journey full of tears and growth.
