Chapter 28
Chapter 28 — The Stage of the Unsaid
The final weeks of the school year passed at a pace that was both bustling and calm — high school graduation exams were approaching, but the tense atmosphere of the play season seemed to have receded behind, giving way to a feeling of relief and contentment that enveloped the entire Drama Club.
Gia Bach, after completing the shortened period of suspension from extracurricular activities, officially returned to the club in a new role — not as an actor, but as an assistant director, assisting Ms. Huong in planning for next year's play season. This is a position that he proactively proposed, wanting to contribute to the club in a different, more meaningful way, instead of just focusing on winning the main role.
"I think I learned many more important things than becoming a good actor," he shared with Anh Thu one afternoon when they happened to meet each other at the school library. "I learned about humility, about putting the interests of the group above personal ambitions, and about the true value of sincere friendship."
Anh Thu smiled, clearly feeling the remarkable maturity in those words. "I believe, you will be an excellent assistant director," she said sincerely. "And I also believe, your sister would be very proud of what you have learned from all these past experiences."
Gia Bach nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude for the tolerance that Anh Thu and the whole club had shown him. “Thank you,” he said, “for giving me the chance to redeem myself, to become a better version of myself.”
Meanwhile, preparations for the international screenwriting and acting scholarship summer camp trip are also being actively completed by the entire selected group - Anh Thu, Kien, Duy Anh, and Ngoc Diep - to complete the necessary procedures. In the evening, the whole group often gathers at Anh Thu's house to learn about the curriculum and famous instructors who will directly teach during the upcoming six weeks of summer camp.
"I still can't believe it, we're about to learn directly from top experts in the industry," Ngoc Diep said, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she looked through the program's list of guest lecturers.
"This is truly a life-changing opportunity," Duy Anh agreed, his voice equally filled with excitement.
Kien, sitting next to Anh Thu, gently held her hand under the table, his eyes filled with appreciation for all the wonderful things that had happened to the group since their victory at the festival. "I think," he said softly, just loud enough for Anh Thu to hear, "this is exactly proof that, sometimes, the most difficult challenges in life, if we are brave enough to face them, can lead us to the most wonderful opportunities that we have never dared to dream of."
Anh Thu nodded in agreement, gently squeezed his hand, his heart filled with happiness and gratitude for the long, meaningful journey that the group had gone through together, now opening a new chapter full of promise for everyone.
Two weeks later, the high school graduation exam officially took place. Even though they went through a tumultuous play season that took up most of their review time, both Anh Thu and Kien still tried their best in the final sprint exam review sessions, often studying together in groups at the library or familiar coffee shops, interspersed with short moments of relaxation so as not to be overloaded.
"Are you stressed?" Kien asked Anh Thu the evening before the first exam day, when they both reviewed the final knowledge together.
"A little bit," Anh Thu admitted, "but after everything we went through in the last play season, I think, a graduation exam is no longer as scary as I once imagined."
The exam went smoothly for both of them, thanks to the careful preparation and strong spirit that both had trained throughout the challenging school year. When the exam results were announced three weeks later, both achieved excellent results, qualifying them to officially confirm admission to their chosen universities.
To celebrate this important milestone, as well as to officially introduce their children's relationship completely, Anh Thu's family and Kien's family decided to organize a joint dinner at a cozy small restaurant near the school - the first time both families fully met each other since the relationship between their two children was officially announced.
The atmosphere was a bit awkward at first, but quickly became warm and friendly when Mr. Duc Thang and Kien's father discovered that they both shared a passion for chess, and quickly fell into a lively conversation. Kien's mother and Anh Thu also quickly became close, as she shared many touching stories about Kien's growing up process that Anh Thu herself had never heard in detail.
"Thank you," Kien's mother said to Anh Thu, her voice deeply sincere, "for being by my side, helping my son overcome the fears that his father and I have been powerless to help for the past four years."
"I'm the one who should thank you," Anh Thu replied, smiling emotionally. "Kien has taught me a lot about courage, about how to face and let go of a painful past."
The dinner lasted in a warm atmosphere, full of laughter, marking the full recognition from both families of the relationship between Anh Thu and Kien - a relationship that has been forged through many challenges and ups and downs, and is now blessed and wholeheartedly supported by both of their loved ones.
When dinner ended, on the way to see the two families leave, Mr. Duc Thang pulled Kien close and patted his shoulder, his voice full of meaning. "I trust that you will always take care of and cherish Anh Thu," he said, "just like you have proven throughout the past school year."
"I promise to always do that, sir," Kien replied, his voice firm and determined, his eyes filled with unquestionable sincerity.
After the two families parted ways, Anh Thu and Kien lingered a bit in front of the restaurant gate, enjoying the peaceful moment at the end of the evening. "Today is truly a wonderful day," Anh Thu said, resting her head on his shoulder.
"I think, this is one of the happiest moments of my life," Kien replied, putting his arm around her. "Seeing both my families get along so well, I feel like every last piece of my life has found its right place."
In the following days, as the group began to prepare their luggage for the upcoming scholarship summer camp trip, an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation spread throughout the club. Ms. Huong, before the group left, spent an afternoon meeting and advising each member.
"I'm so proud of all of you," she said, her eyes filled with emotion as she looked at the four students she had accompanied throughout the tumultuous play season. "The upcoming six weeks of summer camp will bring you a lot of valuable knowledge and experience. I just hope that you will always remember to maintain the values you have learned here - sincerity, perseverance, and solidarity."
"We will never forget what you taught us, ma'am," Anh Thu said, his voice choked with emotion at all that this dedicated teacher had given the group throughout the school year.
Ms. Huong hugged each person, unable to hide her tears of happiness and pride. "Go far, learn a lot, but remember to always find your way back," she said, borrowing a line from the play that the group performed together, making everyone burst into laughter at that ingenuity and meaning.
That afternoon, as the sun gradually set behind the old poinciana trees of the Dawn School yard, Anh Thu and Kien stood for a moment, looking at the familiar scene that had stuck with them throughout their tumultuous senior year, preparing themselves for a new and promising journey that was waiting ahead, not only at the upcoming summer camp, but also throughout the beautiful life that they would continue to write together, chapter by chapter, with all the sincerity and love they had. learned from this meaningful journey.
"Do you remember the first day we met here?" Anh Thu asked, pointing towards the hallway leading to the old hall.
"How could I forget," Kien replied, smiling slightly. "At that time, I thought, I would only stay at this club for a few sessions and then leave. Unexpectedly, it would become the place that changed my life."
The two of them entered the hall together for the last time before the summer vacation, looking at the soul lamp still burning quietly in the middle of the empty stage, as a silent reminder of the beautiful stories that have been, are, and will continue to be written in this place.
