Chapter 25 — The Stage of the Unsaid

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

Nearly two hours of traveling by bus passed in an atmosphere of both suspense and excitement. When the city's large theater - the venue for the regional National School Theater Festival - appeared before our eyes, with a massive, more magnificent architecture than the familiar small hall of Dawn School, the entire cast couldn't help but marvel at the grand scale of the event they were about to participate in.

"It's a lot bigger than I imagined," Kien said softly, looking through the bus window, his voice filled with both shock and excitement.

"We have fully prepared for this," Anh Thu replied, holding his hand in encouragement. "No matter how big the stage, the story we bring will still touch the audience's hearts, just like it did at the rehearsal and rehearsal."

After getting off the bus, the whole group was guided to the large backstage area, where dozens of other teams from many schools in the area were also busy preparing for their competition. The competitive atmosphere, although not fierce, is still evident through the seriousness and high concentration of everyone.

Ms. Huong gathered the entire cast together one last time before the competition officially began, her voice filled with reassurance. "You guys are ready," she said. "Remember, we're not competing to prove we're better than anyone else, but to share a sincere, meaningful story that we've worked hard to build together over the past many months. Just be yourself on stage, and everything will go smoothly."

While waiting for their turn to compete - according to the schedule, the Hung Dawn school team will perform in the afternoon, being the eighth team out of twelve teams participating in the region - Anh Thu and Kien took the opportunity to walk around the hallway of the theater, trying to keep their spirits up before the important competition.

"Are you nervous?" Anh Thu asked, as the two stopped in front of a large window overlooking the city's central square.

"Yes, but not in the way that scared me like before," Kien replied, his voice sincere. "This is a positive thrill, like the feeling before embarking on an exciting adventure, instead of the paralyzing fear I used to experience."

Anh Thu smiled, clearly feeling the outstanding maturity in those words. "That's exactly what I wanted to hear," she said. "You've come a very long way, Kien."

At noon, when the whole team took a break to have a meal at the canteen area for the competing teams, Mr. Duc Thang and Kien's parents suddenly appeared and arranged to arrive earlier than expected so they could meet and encourage their children before the official competition time.

"We want you to know," Kien's mother said, hugging him, "no matter the outcome, we are extremely proud of the journey you have gone through."

Mr. Duc Thang also hugged Anh Thu, his voice full of emotion. "Your mother is definitely watching you from somewhere, just as proud as I am right now."

Those sincere words of encouragement, coming from their closest loved ones, gave both Anh Thu and Kien an invaluable source of mental strength before the important match. As the family left to find seats in the auditorium, the two returned to the backstage area, ready for the final hours of preparation.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, when the loudspeaker announced that the seventh team had just completed their performance, the entire Hung Dawn crew clearly felt their hearts beating faster than ever. Ms. Huong gathered everyone behind the scenes for the last time, her eyes filled with absolute trust.

"This is your moment," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "Go out there, and tell your story with all your heart."

Anh Thu and Kien looked at each other one last time before entering their positions, their eyes filled with trust, determination, and sincere love that had been forged through many challenges throughout a long journey. When the loudspeaker announced the name of the Breaking Dawn school's competition team, marking the moment of stepping into the official spotlight of the regional National School Theater Festival, the two held each other's hands tightly for a brief but meaningful moment, before walking out, ready for the most important performance in their student lives, closing Part V of the story right at the threshold of the fateful night, where all the efforts, sacrifices, and love they had built together throughout A long journey, which will be fully shown in front of the spotlight.

While waiting for their turn to compete in the afternoon, the whole group took the opportunity to watch some performances of other teams from the backstage area reserved for competing teams. Some plays carry the theme of school friendship, others exploit the story of youthful dreams and ambitions - all are carefully and professionally invested, making Anh Thu feel the real competitive pressure of this regional festival.

"The other teams are all excellent," she whispered to Kien, her voice somewhat worried. "I wonder if our play will stand out enough among all these impressive performances."

"We don't need to stand out more than anyone else," Kien replied, his voice calm and confident. "We just need to be sincere with our story. I believe, that's what makes the real difference, not perfect technique or grand stage."

Those words, coming from the person who was once afraid of standing in front of any audience, made Anh Thu feel more confident. She nodded, held his hand tightly, and together they observed a few more performances before it was time to prepare costumes and makeup for their own competition.

The backstage area reserved for the Breaking Dawn team became bustling as competition time approached. Ngoc Diep busily checked every small detail of Anh Thu's outfit, while Duy Anh continuously communicated via walkie-talkie with the theater's technical team to ensure all sound and lighting settings matched perfectly with what had been rehearsed.

"You look great," Ngoc Diep said, stepping back to admire the final result of Anh Thu's outfit, her voice filled with pride. "Ready to shine?"

"I think so," Anh Thu replied, taking a deep breath to calm his mind.

With only fifteen minutes left before the exam, Kien found Anh Thu in a quiet backstage corner, where she was alone reviewing her final lines. “I want to tell you something, before we go out there,” he said, his voice serious.

"I'm listening," Anh Thu replied, looking up at him.

"No matter what happens on stage today, no matter the outcome of the festival," Kien said, taking both of her hands, "I want you to know, the most precious moment of the past four months for me, was not the applause, not overcoming fear, but meeting you, loving you, and being trusted by you right from the first, most difficult days."

That sincere confession made Anh Thu's heart throb with emotion. "That's exactly how I feel," she replied, her voice choked up. "Thank you, for coming into my life, and making it so much more meaningful."

The two stood there, hand in hand, their eyes filled with love and absolute trust, right before the most important moment was about to happen.

"Hung Dong school team, please prepare to take your positions," the host's voice rang out through the backstage speaker system, signaling that there were only a few minutes left until the competition's turn.

The whole group quickly gathered at the starting position, Anh Thu and Kien stood in the front row, ready for the opening scene. Ms. Huong came to the side, holding each member's hand, her eyes filled with trust and undisguised pride.

"I'm proud of all of you," she said, her voice choked with emotion. "No matter what happens from here, you guys are ready, and that's the most important thing."

Duy Anh, standing in the back lighting control position, raised his thumb to signal that everything was perfectly ready. Ngoc Diep, standing next to the props area, also nodded confidently. The entire Breaking Dawn cast, after four long and tumultuous months, is now truly ready for the most important moment.

The main stage lights began to fade, signaling that the show was about to begin. Kien turned to look at Anh Thu one last time, squeezing her hand once more. “We can do it together,” he whispered.

"I know," Anh Thu replied, smiling confidently, "we've been ready for this moment for a long time."

When the stage lights were completely turned off, preparing for the first bright moment marking the start of the performance "The Light at the End of the Road" in front of hundreds of audiences at the regional festival, both Anh Thu and Kien stepped into their positions, their hearts pounding but without any fear, only absolute trust in the story they were about to tell, and in themselves.
