Chapter 12 — Directions to Cloud Valley

Updated 22/08/2026 7 min read

One month after receiving the test results, Dang Khoi arranged a long business trip to the Northwest highlands, officially to survey the site to build a community health station, but in his heart, this was also an opportunity to meet Thao Vy again after many weeks of only contacting by phone.

"I'm almost to the village," he texted as the bus entered the familiar town where their first journey had begun.

"I'll pick you up," Thao Vy replied, and when he got out of the car, she was already waiting, a bright smile on her lips that made his heart feel like it wanted to jump out of his chest.

"Welcome back," she said, unable to hide her joy at seeing him again after so many weeks away.

"I miss this place," Dang Khoi replied, his eyes never leaving her face. "But I miss you more."

Thao Vy blushed at those straightforward words, but did not deny the warm feeling spreading in her heart. “We have a lot of work to do,” she said, trying to turn the conversation to work to hide her embarrassment. "Uncle Chua is waiting to discuss the location of the medical station."

This trip to Ta Chai village was completely different from the first time - there was no longer any tension or awkwardness between the two, but instead there was a natural comfort and closeness as if the five years of separation had never existed. They talked all the way, sharing about work, future plans, and even the little things in daily life.

"Do you remember the first time we went this way?" Thao Vy asked when they stopped to rest in the same clearing where they had saved Minh Trang.

"How could I forget," Dang Khoi replied, smiling at the memory. "That's where I realized, even though five years have passed, the chemistry between us is still intact."

"I realized that too," Thao Vy admitted, sitting down next to him on the familiar rock. "That was the moment that made me start to believe that, maybe, we still had a chance."

Dang Khoi looked at her, his eyes filled with tenderness. "Thao Vy, I know we agreed to take things one step at a time, but I can't help but say this — I love you, I've never stopped loving you for a day in the past five years. And now, without the shadow of fear weighing me down, I want the chance to love you completely, just like you deserve."

Thao Vy was silent for a moment, emotional tears rolling down her cheeks. "I never stopped loving you, Dang Khoi," she admitted, her voice shaking with emotion. "Even though I tried to bury that feeling for the past five years, it was always there, waiting for a chance to live again."

Dang Khoi raised his hand and gently wiped away the tears on her cheeks, an intimate gesture that he had not dared to do since the day of their reunion. "So will you give me that chance? A chance for us to try again, to build a future based on truth and trust, instead of secrets and fear?"

Thao Vy looked deeply into his eyes, searching for the sincerity she needed to make this important decision. What she saw in those eyes — love, sincere regret, and a new determination to live honestly — was enough to dispel the last remaining doubts in her heart.

"Yes," she replied, her voice firm. "I give you that chance, Dang Khoi. Let's try again."

Dang Khoi couldn't contain his happiness, he hugged her, turned in a small circle in the middle of the empty land, their laughter echoed throughout the quiet mountain and forest space. As he laid her down, he bowed his head, and for the first time in five years, their lips met in a tender kiss that contained all the pent-up emotions of their time apart.

"I've been waiting for this moment for so long," Dang Khoi whispered as they separated, his forehead still resting lightly on hers.

"Me too," Thao Vy replied, a happy smile shining on her face, a smile she hadn't shown since the day they broke up five years ago.

They continued their journey to Ta Chai village that afternoon, hand in hand, filled with hope for a new chapter in their love story — a chapter written not by secrets and fears, but by truth, courage, and a love that has been forged through trials to become stronger than ever.

When arriving at the village in the late afternoon, Chua village chief was already waiting at the beginning of the village. His sharp eyes immediately noticed the change in the way the two people held hands as they entered the village.

“Ah, it seems there is good news,” he said, a kind smile spreading across his tanned face. "My daughter has finally found her happiness again."

"Uncle Chua," Thao Vy replied, her cheeks turning pink at the village chief's subtle observation. "This is Dang Khoi, the person you told me about."

"I know," Chua village chief replied, shaking Dang Khoi's hand with sincere warmth. "Welcome back to Ta Chai. I heard you plan to build a permanent medical station for your village?"

"Yes, sir," Dang Khoi replied, his voice full of enthusiasm when talking about the project. "I want to find out which location in the village is most suitable, and what procedures are needed to deploy as soon as possible."

Chua village chief nodded in agreement and led the two around the village to find a suitable location. "I think, the land near the community cultural house will be the best choice," he said, pointing towards a spacious vacant land near the center of the village. "Convenient for people and close to clean water sources."

All afternoon, the three people discussed details about the construction plan, from the area and construction materials suitable for the highland climate, to mobilizing local human resources to participate in construction to reduce costs and increase community cohesion.

"I think, if everything goes well, we can start construction at the beginning of the next dry season," Dang Khoi said, taking careful notes in the notebook he brought with him. "I will work with sponsors to ensure the necessary budget."

"We will also contribute human resources and some local materials," Chua village chief promised. "This will be a project for the whole community, not just the volunteer group."

In the evening, when Thao Vy and Dang Khoi sat alone after dinner at the village chief's house, they both felt a deep sense of satisfaction — not only because their love had been renewed, but because together they were building something of lasting significance for the community they both loved.

"I can't believe it, in just one day, my life has changed so much," Dang Khoi said, his hand tightly holding Thao Vy's hand as they sat watching the sunset from the stilt porch.

"This is just the beginning," Thao Vy replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "We still have a lot to build together, both in love and in this meaningful project."

They sat quietly together, watching the orange sunset across the valley, filled with hope for a future that just a few months ago, neither of them dared to dream of.

Sinh, who happened to pass by and immediately noticed the change in the atmosphere between the two, couldn't hide his mischievous smile. "Finally," she said, sitting down across from them with an excited look on her face. "I've been waiting for this moment for a long time."

"You knew in advance?" Thao Vy asked, a bit surprised.

"Who can't see it," Sinh replied, laughing. "The way you two looked at each other from day one said it all, no matter how much you both tried to hide it."

Dang Khoi smiled, feeling comfortable with the likable straightforwardness of the young girl who had become like Thao Vy's younger sister. "I hope to get to know you better, Sinh. It seems like you will play an important role in both of our lives in the future."

"Of course," Sinh replied confidently. "Who will help you organize your wedding in the future if not me?"

That joke made both Thao Vy and Dang Khoi blush, although neither denied the prospect in their hearts. The evening ended in joyful laughter, a warm start for a new chapter for all three people who have gone through many ups and downs together to reach today.

Before going to bed, Thao Vy stood alone on the stilt porch, looking up at the starry night sky, her heart filled with a deep feeling of gratitude. She thought about the long journey that brought her here — from those first painful days of fleeing the city, to building a new life in the mountains, and now, finding the love she thought was lost forever.

“Thank you,” she whispered into the night, not sure who she was thanking — maybe fate, maybe herself for being brave enough to open her heart again, or maybe this mountain, which had given her a home and, now, a future filled with hope.
