Chapter 13
Chapter 13 — Directions to Cloud Valley
Three months after their reunion, Thao Vy and Dang Khoi's lives have formed a new rhythm, although there are still many challenges of geographical distance that need to be overcome. Dang Khoi maintains his job at the city hospital while spending every vacation and every possible opportunity to visit Thao Vy and monitor the progress of building a community health station in Ta Chai.
"I wish I could be here more," Dang Khoi said during an evening video call, his voice unable to hide his regret. "But hospital work requires you to be present regularly."
"I understand," Thao Vy replied, although in her heart she could not avoid lonely moments when she missed him. "We'll find a way to balance it, step by step."
The medical station construction project received sponsorship from a large medical charity, thanks to Dang Khoi's tireless efforts in advocating, presenting, and building relationships with potential donors. The project officially started at the beginning of the dry season, with the enthusiastic participation of the entire Ta Chai village community.
"Everyone is eager to participate in construction," Thao Vy told Dang Khoi in a call, her voice full of pride. "They see this as their own work, not a project imposed from outside."
"That's exactly what I wanted," Dang Khoi replied. "Sustainability can only be achieved when the community truly feels this is their project, not that of outsiders."

A month later, Dang Khoi arranged a longer business trip than usual, taking advantage of his accumulated vacation time to go to Ta Chai village to directly monitor the construction progress for two weeks. His more frequent presence brings great joy to both Thao Vy and the village community, who have gradually become familiar with and love the dedicated young doctor.
"The medical station is progressing well," Dang Khoi commented when he and Thao Vy inspected the construction site, looking at the house frame that was gradually taking shape. "With this progress, we can finish before the rainy season."
"The people work very hard," Thao Vy replied, pointing to the group of young people in the village who were carrying wooden planks onto the house frame. "They want the project to be completed soon so they can serve people before the winter respiratory disease season arrives."
During the days of supervising the project together, Thao Vy and Dang Khoi also spent time discussing longer-term plans for their future. The issue of geographical distance, of who will move where, gradually becomes an unavoidable topic.
"Have you thought about moving your job here completely?" Thao Vy asked one evening, as the two sat on the stilt porch after a long day of work.
Dang Khoi pondered before answering. "I've thought about that," he admitted. "But I also have responsibilities to my parents in the city, especially taking care of my father. I can't leave completely."
"I understand," Thao Vy replied, although her voice could not hide a bit of worry. "But I'm not sure I can give up life here, Dang Khoi. This place has become an inseparable part of who I am."
"I don't expect you to give it up," Dang Khoi said immediately, holding her hand tightly. "I think, maybe we need to find a balanced solution — maybe I'll spend more time here, work remotely when possible, and organize more regular volunteer trips."
"Is that possible with your job as a doctor?" Thao Vy asked, confused.
"I am considering switching to a part-time job at the city hospital, devoting the rest of my time to community health work in the highlands," Dang Khoi shared, an idea he has been harboring for many weeks. "It would reduce my income, but I thought, that's what I really want to do with my life — not just treat disease within the four walls of a hospital, but bring health care to the places that need it most."
Thao Vy looked at him with eyes full of admiration. "It was a big decision," she said. "Are you sure you're willing to make the trade-off?"
"I'm sure," Dang Khoi replied, without any hesitation. "Especially when the reward is being around you more, and doing work that truly means something to my life."
That conversation marked an important turning point in their relationship — not just emotional promises, but specific, realistic plans to build a common future, harmonizing two lives that seemed difficult to combine.

The next day, Dang Khoi called Dr. Phong to consult on his plan to switch to part-time work. "What do you think about this idea?" he asked, still somewhat worried about the feasibility of the decision.
"I think it's a great idea," Dr. Phong replied over the phone, his voice full of support. "Hospitals always need good doctors, but remote communities need them equally. I will support you in making arrangements with the board of directors."
"Thank you," Dang Khoi replied, feeling much more relieved after receiving support from his respected teacher. "I will officially propose this plan when I return to the city."
During the remaining days of the business trip, Dang Khoi spent more time learning more deeply about the life and culture of the H'Mong people in Ta Chai, not only because of work, but because he wanted to truly integrate into the place that Thao Vy has called home for the past five years.
Chua village chief, recognizing the sincerity of Dang Khoi's efforts, invited him to participate in a traditional harvest-praying ceremony of the village, an honor rarely given to outsiders.
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate," Dang Khoi said, truly touched by that trust.
"You have proven your sincerity through actions, not just words," Chua village chief replied. "That is the most important thing for us Hmong people."
The ceremony took place solemnly with traditional rituals, the sounds of pipes and drums resounded throughout the village, and Dang Khoi, even though he did not fully understand the meaning of each ritual, still felt the sacredness and profound meaning of the cultural tradition that this community has preserved for many generations.
"I feel like I'm really becoming a part of this place," he shared with Thao Vy after the ceremony, as the two sat resting by a small fire.
"Your people love you very much," Thao Vy replied, smiling proudly. "That's not easy to achieve, especially for people from the city."
"I think, it's because they realized I didn't come here just out of duty, but out of real love — both for the job, for the community, and for you," Dang Khoi said, squeezing her hand.
The last days of the business trip passed quickly in a busy work rhythm mixed with precious private moments between the two. When it was time to return to the city, they both felt a familiar sadness of separation, but this time, it came with a new certainty — that the distance was only temporary, and together they were making concrete plans to bridge it in the near future.
"I'll be back soon," Dang Khoi promised as he prepared to get in the car to leave town. "And next time, I'll bring news about the job change."
"I'll wait," Thao Vy replied, their goodbye kiss containing a promise of a future that was becoming clearer with each passing day.
On the way back to the village alone after seeing off Dang Khoi, Thao Vy stopped by the medical station construction site and stood watching the house frame gradually take shape under the sunset. She thought about the journey that brought her here — not just the geographical journey from the city to the mountains, but the journey of a heart that learned to heal, learned to love again after seemingly insurmountable trauma.
"What are you thinking?" He asked, appearing next to her after finishing work for the day.
"I'm thinking about how sometimes the most beautiful things in life are built from broken pieces of the past," Thao Vy replied, smiling as she looked at the construction site gradually being completed. "Like this medical station, built right on the very place that witnessed her pain and healing."
Sinh nodded, putting his arm around the shoulder of the sister she always admired. "I think that is the most beautiful meaning of life, Vy - turning pain into strength, turning wounds into the foundation for better things."
The two of them stood quietly together, watching the last sunset fade behind the mountain peaks, before walking back to the village together. Each person's heart was filled with their own thoughts about the journey ahead, but they all shared the same belief that the best things were still waiting on the horizon.
