Chapter 21
Chapter 21 — Directions to Cloud Valley
The day Dang Khoi returned to Ta Chai, the whole village seemed to awaken in an excited atmosphere of anticipation. Although Thao Vy tried to stay calm, she couldn't hide her nervousness as she waited at the beginning of the trail leading to the village, where she had stood waiting for him on the first day of the fateful trekking trip nearly a year ago.
When Dang Khoi's familiar figure appeared from afar, Thao Vy couldn't help herself and ran to hug him as soon as he set foot near. "You're home," she whispered, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks.
"I'm home," Dang Khoi replied, hugging her tightly as if afraid that if he let go, this happy moment would disappear. "I missed you so much, and I'm sorry for making you wait so long."
They stood there for a long moment, not needing another word, simply enjoying each other's presence after many trying weeks of separation. Around them, the villagers gradually gathered, welcoming the return of the future son-in-law with cheers and warm congratulations.
"How's dad?" Thao Vy asked when they finally separated, her eyes filled with sincere concern after weeks of monitoring the situation through short phone calls.
"Much more stable," Dang Khoi replied, smiling reassuringly. "Mom's here, right? I heard she's up earlier than expected."
"That's right," Thao Vy confirmed. "Mom is helping with the final preparations for the wedding. She's really amazing."

Three days before the official wedding took place, Dang Khoi took time to visit the medical station and ongoing projects, unable to hide his impression at the progress achieved during his absence.
"You've done many great things," he said when Thao Vy took him to check on the progress of the project in Seo Chai, where the foundation for the second medical station had begun to be laid. "I'm proud of you."
"We did it," Thao Vy corrected, smiling at him. "This is a joint achievement for both of us, and for the entire community that believed in and supported this project."
That evening, Dang Khoi held a small meeting with the medical team and coordinator to update the status of the projects and discuss expansion plans for next year. His enthusiasm and strategic vision, combined with Thao Vy's deep practical knowledge of the terrain and local communities, create a perfect combination for the sustainable development of this cooperative model.
"We are planning to build two more medical stations next year, in other villages in the area," Dang Khoi announced during the meeting. "At this rate, we can cover the entire Cloud Valley area with basic health services within the next three years."
Minh Trang, now an experienced head nurse at Ta Chai medical station, also shared plans to train more local medical personnel. "I'm working with two young girls in the village, teaching them basic first aid and health care skills," she reported. "In the long term, we need to build a sustainable medical workforce locally, not depending entirely on volunteer groups from outside."
"That's exactly the right vision," Dang Khoi agreed, impressed by the initiative and foresight of the young nurse he helped on that fateful first trekking trip.

Two days before the wedding, according to traditional H'Mong customs, Dang Khoi's family and Thao Vy's representative — in this case, the head of Chua village, who has become like her adoptive father over the years — held a simple but solemn opening ceremony.
"Today, we came here to officially ask for permission to welcome Thao Vy as daughter-in-law in the family," said Mrs. Hanh, representing Dang Khoi's family in this solemn ceremony.
Chua village chief, as Thao Vy's spiritual guardian at the village, responded with sincere blessings. "We trust Thao Vy to the family, with the hope that love and respect will always accompany both children throughout their lives."
That simple but meaningful ceremony marked the official recognition from both sides of the family, harmoniously combining the traditions of the Kinh and H'Mong people, a beautiful symbol of the combination between the two cultures that Thao Vy and Dang Khoi built together throughout their love journey.
After the ceremony, when everyone had left, Dang Khoi and Thao Vy sat together on the stilt porch, watching the last sunset before the big day. "Only two more days," Thao Vy said, her voice filled with emotion as she thought about the moment ahead.
"I can't wait any longer," Dang Khoi replied, squeezing her hand. "To officially call you my wife, in front of all my loved ones, in front of the mountains and forests that have witnessed our entire journey."

The next day, Minh Duc, Dang Khoi's cousin, volunteered to take on the role of best man, arriving at Ta Chai early to assist with the final preparations, carrying a large suitcase containing the traditional wedding outfit that the family had custom-made.
"You look so handsome in this suit," Minh Duc teased as he helped Dang Khoi try on the outfit one last time. "Sister Vy will definitely not be able to take her eyes off of you."
"I hope so," Dang Khoi replied, smiling slightly at his cousin's teasing, although inside he could not hide the nervousness mixed with excitement before the big day was coming.
Meanwhile, in another stilt house, Thao Vy is also trying on her wedding outfit - a delicate combination of a traditional wedding dress and H'Mong brocade motifs meticulously hand-embroidered by the women in the village, a sentimental gift they gave her.
"You're so beautiful," Sinh exclaimed when he saw Thao Vy in her complete outfit, unable to hide her emotions. "I've never seen you so beautiful."
"Thank you, and thank you everyone for your dedication to this outfit," Thao Vy replied, emotionally looking at the delicate patterns embroidered on the dress. "It was more meaningful than any wedding dress I could have ever imagined."
The evening before the wedding, according to custom, Thao Vy was held by the girls in the village for a small gathering, sharing advice and blessings for her upcoming married life, a traditional ritual that she felt extremely lucky to experience.
"Married life will have difficult times," an older woman in the village, who has been married for more than forty years, shared with Thao Vy. "But if two people always respect and be honest with each other, love will overcome all challenges, just like a stream that always finds its way through all obstacles."
"I will remember this advice, grandma," Thao Vy replied, bowing her head to thank her for her sincere sharing.
That night, when all the preparations were completed, Thao Vy lay in bed, finding it difficult to sleep because of the mixture of nervousness and excitement. She looked out the window, watching the starry night sky of Cloud Valley, the place that witnessed her and Dang Khoi's entire journey of love, suffering, and ultimately healing.
"Tomorrow," she whispered to herself, a happy smile on her lips, "tomorrow, everything will officially begin."
She closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep, but her mind was still filled with images of tomorrow — of Dang Khoi waiting for her at the end of the aisle, of the vows they were about to exchange, of a future full of hope waiting ahead, built on a solid foundation of truth, courage, and a love that had been forged through many trials to become immortal.
In the house next door, Dang Khoi was having a similarly sleepless night, his mind reeling with memories of the whole journey — from the stunned moment of meeting Thao Vy again in town, to the painful days of confessing the truth, and now, standing on the threshold of a new, fulfilling life with the woman he loved most deeply. He smiled in the darkness, whispering a silent thank you to fate for giving him this precious second chance, before finally falling asleep, dreaming of the bright future that awaited as soon as dawn broke over the rolling peaks surrounding Cloud Valley, where their love story had begun, broken, and now, was about to be continued with a lifelong vow.
