Chapter 28 — Directions to Cloud Valley

Three years after their fateful reunion in the small town, Thao Vy and Dang Khoi's lives have become richer and more meaningful than ever. The community health and sustainable tourism cooperation network they initiated has spread to eight northern mountainous provinces, helping tens of thousands of highlanders access basic health services that they previously did not have access to.

Baby Dang Vy, now two and a half years old, grew up healthy and strong amid the love of her family and the community of Ta Chai village, fluent in both Vietnamese and basic H'Mong words that she learned from her small friends in the village.

"She can speak both languages," Sinh boasted to Thao Vy one afternoon, while she was playing with Dang Vy in the yard. "Did you hear her calling me in Hmong?"

"I heard," Thao Vy replied, smiling proudly as she looked at her daughter running and playing. "She is truly a living bridge between two cultures that Dang Khoi and I always cherish."

Dang Khoi, who has now completely switched to working part-time at the city hospital, spends most of his time coordinating the highland community health network, a perfect balance between medical expertise and the community mission he has pursued.

On an autumn morning, when the air in Cloud Valley began to cool and the maple trees began to turn bright yellow, the small family of Thao Vy and Dang Khoi had a special trip - taking little Dang Vy to visit the beautiful lake where they spent a memorable honeymoon three years ago.

"This is where we started the most beautiful chapter of our lives," Dang Khoi told his daughter, even though she was too young to fully understand the profound meaning of those words, she could only cheer with delight at the scene of the sparkling lake and flocks of flying wild birds.

"Water! Beautiful water!" Dang Vy exclaimed, pointing towards the lake surface reflecting the sunlight, making both Thao Vy and Dang Khoi laugh at her daughter's innocence.

They set up a small tent, camped overnight in this special place, enjoying precious family moments amidst the pristine nature that they both cherished deeply. That night, when Dang Vy fell asleep in the tent, Thao Vy and Dang Khoi sat next to a small campfire, looking at the starry sky, reviewing past memories.

"Can you believe it, it's been three years since we reunited," Thao Vy said, leaning her head on her husband's shoulder.

"Three years full of turmoil, but also full of happiness," Dang Khoi replied, squeezing his wife's hand. "I can't imagine what my life would be like without that fateful moment in town."

"Do you regret anything?" Thao Vy asked, a question she rarely asked but was always curious about the answer.

Dang Khoi thought for a moment before answering sincerely. “I regret making you endure the pain for five long years before we reunited,” he said. "But I have no regrets about the journey that brought us here. Every challenge, every difficulty, has taught us valuable lessons, and led us to a much more meaningful life than I ever dared to dream of."

When the first light of dawn shines through the mountain peaks, dyeing the calm lake surface pink, the whole family wakes up and welcomes a new day together amidst the beautiful natural scenery. Dang Vy, waking up earlier than usual, ran out of the tent, cheering at the brilliant sunrise.

"Mom and dad, it's so beautiful!" the little girl exclaimed, causing both Thao Vy and Dang Khoi to rush out of the tent to admire that magical moment with their daughter.

They stood there, the whole family of three, watching the brilliant sunrise spread across Cloud Valley - the land that witnessed the entire love journey of Thao Vy and Dang Khoi, from the pain of separation, through the challenging journey of healing, to the complete happiness of a family built on the solid foundation of truth, courage, and eternal love.

"This is home," Thao Vy whispered, her hand holding her husband's hand tightly, her eyes following the figure of her little daughter running and playing in the morning sunlight. "Not because this place is perfect, but because together we have made it a place of belonging, where love, truth, and hope are always cherished and nurtured."

On the way back to the village after a camping trip, the small family stopped at a familiar resting spot, where Thao Vy often takes trekking groups to stop to admire the scenery. Dang Vy, even though she was young, began to show her love for nature just like her mother, always curiously pointing at every wildflower and every bird flying by.

"She will definitely become a good trekking guide in the future," Dang Khoi commented, smiling as he looked at his daughter trying to pick up a small wildflower to give to her mother.

"Or maybe a doctor, like dad," Thao Vy replied, taking the flower from her daughter's hand with a radiant smile. "No matter which path you choose, mom and dad will always support you wholeheartedly."

As they continued their return journey, Dang Khoi received a call from Dr. Phong, who still maintains an important advisory role for the entire community health network they have built over the years.

"Khoi, I have good news," Dr. Phong said over the phone, his voice full of excitement. "The Ministry of Health has just approved the budget to replicate your model across the entire Northwest and Central Highlands regions in the next five years."

"That's really great news," Dang Khoi replied, unable to hide his emotion at the news. "I will immediately notify Thao Vy and the whole team."

When he turned off the phone, he turned to his wife and shared the good news he had just received. His voice was still filled with excitement at that unexpected news. Thao Vy, even though she was holding Dang Vy in her arms, could not hide her extreme happiness at the prospect that the model they had worked so hard to build would continue to spread, bringing benefits to more communities across the country.

"We've done more than I ever dreamed possible," she said, her eyes filling with tears of emotion. "From a small trekking trip, we are now contributing to changing the lives of hundreds of thousands of people."

"And this is just the beginning," Dang Khoi replied, embracing both his wife and daughter in a warm hug amid the beautiful mountain scenery. "We have a long journey ahead, but I believe that, with this love and determination, we can overcome any challenge to continue spreading good things."

That evening, when returning to their familiar stilt house, Thao Vy and Dang Khoi organized a small meal to share the good news with Sinh, Minh Trang, and the head of Chua village - the people who had accompanied them throughout the journey of building the cooperative model from the first days.

"This is the achievement of all of us," Dang Khoi said, raising a glass of homemade fruit juice prepared by people in the village to celebrate the good news. "None of us can do this alone, and that is the biggest lesson this journey has taught me."

Chua village chief, moved by the news of the recognition and expansion of the model in which he himself contributed a significant part, shared his profound thoughts. "When Thao Vy came to my village seven years ago, she was just a young girl carrying her own pain, looking for peace in the mountains and forests," he said. "Who would have thought that from that pain, something with such great influence would arise, changing the lives of so many people."

Sinh, now an experienced coordinator who has gone through each ups and downs of the project, also shared his feelings. "I'm proud to have accompanied Ms. Vy and Mr. Khoi throughout this journey," she said. "And I believe that our story will continue to inspire many other people, in many other places, to also dare to believe in the power of cooperation, compassion and sincere love."

The meal ended in a warm atmosphere, filled with laughter and blessings, a living testament to the strong friendship and camaraderie that has been built over many years of overcoming difficulties together, celebrating successes together, and working together towards a brighter future for the Cloud Valley community and beyond, a future that everyone present that evening was proud to help build.
