Chapter 15 — Directions to Cloud Valley

The inauguration day of Ta Chai community health station has finally arrived, after many months of tireless efforts from both the village community and volunteer groups. That morning, the whole village was bustling with a festive atmosphere, with flags and flowers decorated all the roads leading to the newly inaugurated medical station.

"I can't believe it, this day has finally come," Thao Vy told Dang Khoi as they both stood admiring the completed medical station building, with the words "Ta Chai Community Health Station" solemnly painted above the main door.

"This is the achievement of many people, not just us," Dang Khoi replied, squeezing her hand. "But I'm proud to have been a part of this journey."

The inauguration ceremony attracted a large number of participants - not only Ta Chai villagers, but also representatives from neighboring villages, sponsors, a number of local health officials, and a group of reporters who came to report on this innovative cooperation model.

Chua village chief, in his role as host of the ceremony, spoke with an emotional voice. "Today marks a historical milestone for our Ta Chai village. For the first time, people have a medical station right in the locality, no longer having to walk for many hours to access basic medical services."

Dang Khoi, representing the volunteer group, also gave a short but meaningful speech. "We believe that this model of cooperation between community health and sustainable tourism can become a model for many other highland areas across the country. This is not just a story about a medical station, but a story about the power of cooperation, trust, and long-term commitment."

In the crowd attending the ceremony, Minh Trang, a medical student who had suffered from altitude sickness on her first trip, was also present, now in a completely different role — she had graduated and volunteered to register as the first permanent nurse at the new medical station.

"I didn't expect to come back here with a completely different role," Minh Trang shared with Thao Vy during a break in the ceremony. "My almost life-threatening experience on my first trip completely changed my career direction. I wanted to contribute to the communities that need medical care the most."

"We're happy to have you here," Thao Vy replied, hugging the young girl with sincere warmth. "The people will be very lucky to have you take care of them regularly."

Doctor Phong, also present at the ceremony as a professional advisor to the new medical station, could not hide his pride when seeing his students have grown up and created meaningful changes. "I never thought that first volunteer work trip would lead to such a great achievement," he told Dang Khoi.

"I didn't expect it either, sir," Dang Khoi replied, smiling and looking around at the colorful festival scene. "But I think, sometimes the best things come from the most unexpected beginnings."

In the afternoon, after the official ceremony, the whole village held a big party to celebrate, full of traditional dishes, the sounds of flutes, drums, and unique dances of the H'Mong people. The festive atmosphere filled the whole village, bustling laughter and chatter rang out from every corner.

During a moment of rest in the middle of the festival, Dang Khoi pulled Thao Vy to a private corner, his eyes filled with unusual seriousness.

"What's up?" Thao Vy asked, noticing the change in his attitude.

"I have something to tell you," Dang Khoi began, his voice shaking slightly. "Today, witnessing all that we have built together, I realize more clearly than ever that you are the person I want to build a fulfilling future with."

Thao Vy felt her heart beat faster at those words, a premonition of what was about to happen. "Dang Khoi..." she whispered.

"I know we agreed to take it one step at a time," he continued, "but I can't wait any longer to say this. Thao Vy, do you want to build a more fulfilling life with me — not just as partners, but as husband and wife?"

Tears of happiness began to well up in Thao Vy's eyes when she realized the meaning behind that question. "Are you proposing to me?" she asked, her voice both trembling and filled with happiness.

"That's right," Dang Khoi replied, kneeling down on one knee right in the middle of the festival scene, taking out a simple but delicate ring from his pocket. "Dinh Thao Vy, do you agree to be my wife?"

Around them, a few villagers who happened to pass by stopped, realized what was happening, and quickly informed the others. Soon a small crowd had gathered around them, all waiting with bated breath for an answer.

"Yes," Thao Vy replied, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. "Yes, I agree, Dang Khoi."

Cheers rang out from the surrounding crowd when Dang Khoi stood up, put the ring on Thao Vy's finger, and then hugged her amidst applause and congratulations from the entire village community. The head of Chua village, hearing the news, rushed over, his face beaming with joy.

"This is a doubly great day," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "Not only did we inaugurate the medical station, but we also witnessed this beautiful marriage proposal. We in Ta Chai village are so lucky to witness the love story of these two children."

Sinh, standing in the crowd, could not hide her tears of happiness as she witnessed the moment she had been waiting for a long time. "I knew this day would come!" She screamed with joy and ran to hug Thao Vy.

"Thank you for always supporting me," Thao Vy said, tightly hugging her spirited sister who had accompanied her through the most difficult years.

News of the proposal quickly spread throughout the village, turning the clinic's inauguration ceremony into a double celebration, with double joy filling the festive space. The dances and the sound of the flute became even more bustling, as if the entire Northwest mountains and forests were rejoicing with the couple who had found each other again after many ups and downs.

In the evening, when the festival gradually subsided, Dang Khoi called his mother to tell the news. "Mom, I just proposed to Thao Vy, and she said yes," he said, his voice unable to hide his happiness.

"Oh son," Mrs. Hanh replied, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm so happy for you. When will I meet my future daughter-in-law?"

"I will bring Thao Vy home to meet my family soon, mom," Dang Khoi promised, his eyes looking towards Thao Vy who was standing and chatting happily with Sinh and Minh Trang not far away.

That night, when everyone gradually returned home after the festival, Thao Vy and Dang Khoi sat together on the stilt porch, looking at the sparkling starry sky, the engagement ring sparkling on Thao Vy's finger under the moonlight.

"Are you happy?" Dang Khoi asked, his hand squeezing her hand tightly.

"Happier than anything I've ever dared to dream of," Thao Vy replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "From a mystery on my first trekking trip, to a love that found itself again, and now, a promise for a fulfilling future — I couldn't ask for more."

They sat quietly together under the night sky of Cloud Valley, which had witnessed the entire journey of reunion, healing, and now, a meaningful marriage promise — symbolizing a love that had overcome all challenges to become more sustainable and complete than ever.

"Have you thought about where to hold the wedding?" Thao Vy asked after a moment of silence, her voice full of dreaminess.

"I think maybe we should organize it right here, in Ta Chai," Dang Khoi replied, smiling as he imagined that scene. "The place that has witnessed our entire story, from the first days full of hurt to complete happiness today."

"That's a great idea," Thao Vy replied, her eyes lighting up with excitement. "We can invite the whole village community to participate, combining traditional H'Mong rituals with the values we cherish."

"Whatever you want," Dang Khoi said, kissing her lightly on the forehead. "As long as we finally get to call each other husband and wife, every other detail is not as important."

They continued to talk until late, sketching out the first ideas for their future wedding, each word filled with joy and hope for a new chapter, more beautiful than ever, waiting ahead.

Before going to bed, Thao Vy texted her father in the city, who had always supported her despite not fully understanding his daughter's decision to leave her career as an architect five years ago. "Dad, I just got engaged," she texted, attaching a photo of her and Dang Khoi smiling happily.

A few minutes later, her phone rang. "Daughter, I'm so happy for you," her father said over the phone, his voice filled with emotion even though he couldn't hide a hint of regret. "I wish I could have met my future son-in-law sooner."

"I will bring him home to visit dad soon," Thao Vy promised, touched by the affection of her father who always silently watched and supported all her decisions, even though sometimes those decisions made him worried.
