Chapter 1: Chapter 1 The Sleeper and the Unfinished Sonata — Rebellious Symphony

Updated 09/09/2026 9 min read

The clear sound of the Guarneri violin rang through the vast hall of Royal High International Gifted High School.

Phương Linh, class president of 11A1 and the school's top student, was immersed in Beethoven's *Sonata No. 9*. Her eyes were closed, her chin resting lightly against the polished instrument as her bow hand moved with machine-like precision. Each note soared through the hall, rounded and exact to the tenth of a second.

But when the last note ended, the echo had not yet had time to dissipate into the red velvet curtains, a deep sigh rang out from the audience seats below the stage.

"Linh," Mr. Hoàng, head of the school's Art Department, took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Your technique is as perfect as ever. Flawless. No judges can deduct points from your technique."

"But... sir?" Phương Linh lowered the violin, her spine still straight and her delicate eyebrows slightly furrowed. She knew there was always a “but” after such compliments.

"But the theme of this year's National Youth Art Creativity Contest is 'Breaking limits'," Mr. Hoàng stood up and walked closer to the stage. "You've played this Sonata hundreds of times. It's safe, it's academic, but it's not groundbreaking. Do you intend to use this dry perfection to compete for the only full scholarship to the Juilliard Academy of Arts? They look for a real artist with personality, not a music machine."

Linh pursed her lips. Mr. Hoàng's comment was like a bucket of cold water poured over her ambition. She had been preparing for this scholarship for three years: earning perfect scores in science, serving as Student Council president, and winning first prize in city-level violin competitions. Everything in Phương Linh's life was arranged in neat squares, with no room for deviation.

"What do I need to do?" Linh took a deep breath, suppressing her frustration.

"I need a new composition. An unconventional combination. Bringing modern breath into classical music. Something... more impulsive, more rebellious, for example," Mr. Hoàng suggested, then packed up the documents. "Think carefully, Phương Linh. You only have three weeks left to submit your qualifying demo."

When Teacher Hoàng's shadow disappeared behind the hall door, Linh angrily put the violin back in its case. Rebel? Impulsive? Those words were completely absent from her vocabulary.

The next morning, in classroom 11A1.

"Trần Nhật Minh!"

Phương Linh's clear, authoritative voice rang out, cutting through the chatter of the entire class during the first activity period.

All eyes turned to the last table in the row next to the window. There, a male student was face down under the table, sleeping so soundly that the sound of calling his name didn't even make him move. He wore a uniform shirt but did not button the top three buttons, revealing a black t-shirt inside, his messy hair covering half of his face.

That's Nhật Minh. "Specialty" of class 11A1.

Linh held the attendance book, clicked her heels, and walked to the back of the class. She tapped the tip of her ballpoint pen hard on Minh's desk. Knock, knock, knock.

"Are you going to get up to hear the announcement, or wait for me to invite the homeroom teacher up?" Linh crossed her arms across her chest, her eyes as cold as ice looking down at the person who was ruining the perfect picture of her class.

Nhật Minh vaguely raised his head. He rubbed his still sleepy eyes with his hand and yawned loudly, not showing any signs of shyness in front of the notoriously strict class president.

"Good morning, class president," Minh said, his voice hoarse and sleepy. "It's so early in the morning and you're already making so much noise, it's affecting the quality of my sleep."

The whole class giggled but quickly quieted down when Linh shot her bullet-shaped eyes past.

"Trần Nhật Minh, you came to school fifteen minutes late. The uniform is not according to regulations. And most importantly..." Linh flipped through the notebook, pulled out a wrinkled test paper and dropped it on his desk. "Yesterday's Math test score: Two and a half points. You're dragging down the entire class's performance, do you know that?"

Minh glanced at the red score on the paper, shrugged his shoulders, and acted indifferent to the point of disgust. "Two and a half points? Higher than I thought. I thought I submitted the paper blank."

"Uncle...!" Linh gritted her teeth, trying to suppress her anger. She could not understand people like Nhật Minh—people born into comfortable families (Minh's parents were both famous professors and doctors), educated at the best schools, yet willing to throw away every opportunity simply to sleep through the day. To her, it was an insult to every effort she had made.

"If at the end of this month your average score is not up to average, I will ask the school to transfer you to another class," Linh coldly declared, then turned on her heel and walked back to the podium.

"It's up to you," Minh muttered, putting his head down on the table, continuing his journey into dreamland.

He truly did not care. To Minh, school was a daytime prison where he was forced to show up to appease his traditional parents, who wanted him to follow the family's prestigious medical path. His real life began at night, when lifeless textbook words gave way to sound waves, pounding beats, and the flashing lights of the underground music scene.

Six o'clock in the evening.

Royal High was deserted. Most of the students had long since left, with only a few students remaining to study in the library or join sports clubs on the field.

Phương Linh packed her books after an afternoon shut away in the library researching modern compositions. Her head hurt. She had tried dozens of symphonies combining pop and jazz, but all of them felt awkward. Teacher Hoàng was right: she lacked "soul" and "rebellion."

On the way to carry the violin case to the main gate, Linh had to take a shortcut through building C - a row of old warehouses waiting to be renovated, located deep in the basement of the physical area. The walls here were peeling and damp, and hardly anyone came around after school.

While passing through the dark hallway of the warehouse, Linh suddenly stopped.

There was a strange sound.

A deep, thudding bass beat was lightly vibrating the old ceramic tile floor. It was very small, seemingly coming from a fairly well-soundproofed room, but the sharp hearing of a classical music player like Linh immediately caught it.

Linh frowned. No music club should have been operating in this abandoned warehouse. She guessed that a group of delinquent students had gathered to smoke or hold an underground party. As class representative and Student Council president, she could not ignore it.

Linh gently walked forward, following the sound. It came from storage room No. 4 at the end of the hallway - where the school's broken musical instruments used to be stored.

She grabbed the tarnished brass doorknob. No lock.

Linh slowly turned the handle, opening the door a small crack. She took a breath, mentally preparing herself to be caught in the act and write down the names of rule violators in the duty book.

But the scene inside made her stunned, stopping dead in place.

Inside the dusty, cramped storage room, there were no smoking students at all.

There was only one person.

Trần Nhật Minh.

The special student who carried a notebook and often fell asleep in class was standing in front of a folding table. On it lay not books but a complex array of electronic devices: a laptop displaying dozens of sound tracks, a MIDI keyboard, a Launchpad with square keys flashing colorful LEDs, and a professional audio mixer.

Minh wears a black over-ear headset that covers his ears. His face under the light of the screen no longer had the lethargic, sleepy look of the morning. Instead it is highly focused, sharp and passionate. The hands that were only used to cross the table were now gliding over the MIDI keys and the rhythm pad with amazing speed, decisiveness and skill.

Each intense, powerful electronic beat, mixed with ghostly synthesizer sounds echoed in the room. The melody is extremely modern, catchy and has a strange charm.

Linh opened her eyes wide, her hand unconsciously clutching the violin case. She was no stranger to electronic music, but the melody that was coming from this shabby storage room... it was too professional. It even feels a bit familiar.

Suddenly, Linh's eyes turned to Minh's laptop screen. In the right corner of the screen, there is an extremely impressive stylized logo: The neon-colored letter "Z" flashes to the beat of the drum.

Linh's heart skipped a beat. She quickly covered her mouth to keep from speaking out loud.

"Z"?

The anonymous producer and DJ has become famous in the electronic music community (Underground) recently? The person who just last week released a hit that reached number 1 on the national independent digital music chart? The person who... Phương Linh's biggest secret is that she often wears headphones to listen to his music every morning jogging to relieve study pressure?

Trần Nhật Minh, the laziest person in school, is "Z"?

Because of the shock, the heavy wooden violin case in Linh's hand slipped slightly, hitting the edge of the wooden door with a loud bang.

The music in the room turned off.

Nhật Minh snatched the headset off his neck, turned around, his eyes as sharp as knives pointed straight at the door.

Two eyes met. Four eyes stared at each other in an atmosphere thick with silence.

Linh stood there stiffly, her hand clutching the violin case, her usual stern expression was replaced by extreme surprise.

As for Nhật Minh, his face turned pale in an instant. His biggest secret, which he has worked hard to hide for the past two years from the eyes and ears of his strict medical school professor father and the school, has been discovered again. And worst of all, the person who discovered it was Phương Linh - the cold, principled class president, the number one "good student" of Royal High.

"You..." Minh stammered, took a step back, and quickly folded the laptop screen down as if to hide the crime scene. "What are you doing here at this hour?"

Phương Linh took a deep breath. The initial surprise gradually passed away, giving way to the cold, calculating head of the Student Council President. She slowly pushed the door open and entered the room, using her heel to close the door.

She glanced at the expensive sound system on the table, then looked straight at Nhật Minh's face, trying to keep calm. The corner of her lips slightly raised, forming a rare smile, but carrying a meaning that Minh did not want.

"Good evening, 'Z'," Linh said, breaking the silence. "Turns out, the reason you always fall asleep in class is because you're busy being a youth idol at night. What would the principal and your parents, Professor Tran, think if they knew you brought a whole computer system into school to make underground music instead of solving Math problems?"

Minh gritted his teeth and rushed forward to block the equipment table. "What do you want? Discipline me? Or report to my family so they can confiscate all my computers?"

Linh placed the violin case on the old wooden table nearby. She crossed her arms across her chest and looked at Minh with the eyes of someone holding the decisive chess piece. Teacher Hoàng's comment from that afternoon suddenly echoed in her mind: *"You need an unconventional combination. Something a little rebellious..."*

She just found the most perfect rebellion.

"I have no interest in sabotaging your underground career, Nhật Minh," Linh said slowly, clearly saying each word. "But... I have an art contest to win. And I need a composition that combines classical violin and modern electronic music. Something crazy enough to beat all the competition."

Minh blinked, not yet able to understand what was happening. "What do you mean..."

"There's always a price for keeping your mouth shut, Trần Nhật Minh," Phương Linh stepped closer, lightly tapping her index finger on the surface of his Launchpad. "Be my personal producer. Mix my entry. From tomorrow, you belong to me until the contest ends. Either that, or tomorrow, "Z"'s true identity will be broadcast over the school's loudspeakers."

Nhật Minh was stunned, staring at the petite girl radiating such oppressive pressure. He had just been blackmailed by the class president who played the violin.

The most discordant symphony of youth officially begins from this moment.
