Chapter 19: Chapter 19 The Secret Between Them — Rebellious Symphony

Updated 09/09/2026 7 min read

In the days after they were officially together, Linh and Minh quickly realized that keeping a real relationship a secret was much more difficult than maintaining their previous "fake dating" cover.

In the past, when it was just acting, every gesture was purposeful and easy to control. But now, when the feelings are real, unconscious moments become the biggest risk of revealing secrets: a lingering look that lasts longer than usual, an uncontrollable smile when thinking about each other in the middle of class, or simply the way Linh unconsciously searches for Minh's figure every time she enters class.

"You have to be more careful," Bảo Châu whispered a warning one morning, when he saw Linh smiling alone while reading Minh's text message during class. "Miss Hanh just saw you smiling silly like that. If you keep revealing it like this, soon the whole school will guess the truth."

Linh quickly put away her phone and regained her familiar serious expression. "Thanks for reminding me. I'll be more careful."

Not only at school, but even at home, Linh also had to learn how to hide this new happiness from her father's watchful eyes. Mr. Đạt, after the ultimatum, seemed to pay closer attention to his daughter's every move, often asking about the schedule, sometimes suddenly calling to check in the middle of a practice session.

"Where are you?" was the question he frequently asked over the phone every night, his voice still remaining stern even though he had made concessions until the end of the final round.

"I'm in the school library, practicing for the finals," Linh still had to answer like that, even though she was actually in storage room No. 4 with Minh — a half-truth carefully selected to not be a complete lie, but also not to reveal the whole story.

Having to constantly balance honesty and the need to protect secrets makes Linh sometimes feel exhausted. But every time she came to warehouse number 4 and saw Minh waiting with a warm smile, all her tiredness seemed to disappear.

"Are you tired?" Minh asked one night, when Linh seemed more stressed than usual after another check-up call from his father.

"A little," Linh admitted, sitting down next to him, resting her head on his shoulder naturally. "Keeping this secret is more tiring than I thought it would be."

"We don't have to keep it like this forever," Minh said, gently stroking her hair. "After the finals, maybe it's time for us to make things public, both about our relationship, and maybe, about Z's identity as well."

Linh looked up at him, surprised by the change in his voice. "Are you really ready to reveal Z's identity?"

Minh was silent for a moment, thinking carefully before responding. "I don't know if I'm completely ready. But I know, I can't live forever in two separate worlds like this. Sooner or later, everything has to merge into one."

"What about your father?" Linh asked, her voice worried.

"I don't know," Minh sighed, his eyes distant. "But I think, if he sees that I'm really talented, really happy with this path, maybe he will gradually understand. At least, that's the hope I'm clinging to."

Linh grabbed his hand and squeezed it in encouragement. "No matter what happens, I will be by your side."

A few days later, a small incident almost revealed both of their secrets. During a break between performance rehearsals to prepare for the school's founding anniversary, Minh accidentally left his familiar headphones on the table, with an experimental Z demo music still playing softly.

A curious male student, named Duc, accidentally picked it up, tried it on his ear, and then shouted excitedly. "Hey, is this Z's new song? Why hasn't it been released online yet?"

The group of friends around him immediately gathered around curiously, causing Minh to quickly snatch back the headphones and pretend to laugh. "No, I just downloaded temple music from a strange website, there must have been an unreleased song leaked."

"Sounds good," Duc commented, without any further doubts, fortunately. "Send me that website link." Minh nodded lightly, making a promise, then quickly left the crowd, his heart still pounding because of the incident that almost revealed the secret. Linh, watching from afar, breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the situation being resolved smoothly.

“You need to be more careful with those headphones,” she reminded her when they met again in the storage room that night. "Almost revealed everything."

"I know," Minh nodded, his expression still a bit panicked. "Maybe I've been too careless lately, maybe because my mind keeps thinking about other things." He glanced at her meaningfully, making Linh blush.

"Don't blame me," she replied, although inside she couldn't help but feel a little happy at that sweet confession.

But behind those sweet moments, both of them are more aware than ever of the fragility of the secret they are protecting together — not just the secret of their relationship, but also the much bigger secret of "Z"'s true identity, a secret that with just a small mistake can collapse at any time, leading to countless consequences that neither of them can fully foresee.

That weekend, to reduce tension, Minh suggested that the two spend an afternoon not talking about the competition, not discussing Kiên or his parents, simply walking around the lake near the school like a normal couple, without worrying about cover or secrets.

They chose a deserted corner of the park, bought two ice cream cones from a small roadside cart, and sat on a stone bench overlooking the rippling lake surface under the setting sun.

"If it weren't for all this trouble," Linh said, licking the ice cream, her voice dreamy, "what do you think we would be like? I mean, if you weren't 'Z', if I didn't have to worry about scholarships, about my dad?"

Minh thought for a moment and smiled. "Maybe we will still meet each other somehow. I believe, people who truly belong together will always find their way to each other, no matter how different the circumstances are."

"Do you believe in destiny?" Linh asked, a bit surprised by this unexpected romance.

"I believe in music," Minh replied, his eyes looking far away at the lake. "And I think, two people who can create beautiful, harmonious music like us, no matter how different our starting points, will find a way to harmonize in life, not just in art."

Linh leaned her head on his shoulder, smiling contentedly. "I like the way you look at things. Before meeting you, I always looked at life through the lens of achievement, of goals to be achieved. You taught me to see beauty in even the imperfect, uncertain things."

"And you taught me that discipline and passion don't have to be opposites," Minh replied, gently kissing the top of her head. "We both learned something valuable from each other."

They sat there until the sun disappeared behind the trees, enjoying a rare afternoon unencumbered by secrets, threats, or family pressures — simply two young people, in love, and believing in a future they were building together, one note at a time.

On the way home, when breaking up at a familiar street corner to avoid being seen together too close to Linh's house, Minh held her hand for a long time before letting go. “Thank you for this afternoon,” he said. "I need moments like this, to remind myself that, no matter how messy things get, there is still something worth fighting for."

"Always," Linh replied, gently squeezing his hand before leaving, filled with hope for a future that she believed that, despite many difficulties, they would overcome together.

That evening, when she got home, Linh texted Bảo Châu recounting the wonderful afternoon she had just had, along with a secretly taken photo of the lake at sunset that she saved as a souvenir. Bảo Châu responded immediately with a series of heart emoticons, along with the message: "Look so happy, Linh, take care, you both deserve this after all the pressure you've been through."

Linh smiled as she read the message, then put down the phone and lay on the bed looking up at the ceiling. She thought about the journey over the past two months, from one evening accidentally discovering Minh's secret, to controversial training sessions, reconciliations, and now a sincere relationship that she never dared to dream of. Even though there's still a stressful final round ahead, her father's ultimatum, and the ghosts from Minh's past that haven't completely disappeared, Linh feels like she's ready to face anything, as long as Minh is by her side.

She fell asleep with a small smile on her lips, her sleep that night more peaceful than any other night since it all began.
