Chapter 16
Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Bảo Châu and the Unspoken Things — Rebellious Symphony
"Okay," Bảo Châu placed his milk tea cup firmly on the table during lunch time, his eyes unusually serious. "I've been silent long enough, Linh. It's time for you to tell me the whole truth."
Linh was startled and almost dropped the chopsticks she was holding. "What's the whole truth?"
"Don't pretend to be naive with me," Bảo Châu crossed his arms, his voice both tough and filled with concern. "You and Nhật Minh pretended to be dating to hide something, and now it seems that the pretense is no longer completely a pretense. Someone named Kiên threatened both of you for something related to 'exam cheating'. Your competition composition was praised by Mr. Hoàng as the best he had ever heard from a student. And for the past two months, you have been disappearing every night to an abandoned warehouse. Linh, I have been your best friend for the past three years. I am deserves to know what's really going on."
Linh looked at her friend, feeling guilty rising in her heart. She kept this secret for so long, not because she didn't trust Châu, but because of her promise to Minh. But now, after everything she's been through, she realizes it's no longer fair to keep hiding things from her best friend.
"Okay," Linh sighed, lowering her voice. "But you must promise to keep it absolutely confidential. This is no joke, Châu. It can affect a person's entire future." Bảo Châu looked serious and nodded firmly. "I promise."
Linh took a deep breath, then told the whole story — from the night she accidentally met Minh in warehouse number 4, discovering he was the famous underground producer "Z", the initial forced contract, to the training sessions that gradually changed both of them, and finally the threat from Đỗ Xuân Kiên.
Bảo Châu heard everything, his eyes opened wide, unable to hide his surprise. "Nhật Minh... is it Z? Is that the name my cousin hears all day online?"
"That's right," Linh nodded.
"Oh my god," Bảo Châu held his head, his expression both shocked and amused. "I used to think he was just a lazy, useless kid who slept all day. Who knew that behind that was a hidden genius."
"You can't tell anyone," Linh repeated, her voice serious.
"I promised," Bảo Châu said, then looked at you with gentler eyes. "But Linh, I have to be honest, I'm a bit sad that you kept it from me for so long. We always share everything with each other."
"I'm sorry," Linh said, her voice sincere. "But this is not my secret to share casually. I made a promise to Minh, and I need to keep it." Bảo Châu nodded, understanding the problem. "Okay, I understand. But now that I know, I want to help. Is there anything I can do to assist you two?"
Linh smiled, touched by her best friend's unconditional support. "Just keep it a secret, and maybe, sometimes help me cover my parents' eyes when I need to stay at school later than usual."
"Small matter," Bảo Châu smiled, then his eyes became mischievous. "But you have to answer me a much more important question: do you like Nhật Minh? Real like, not just because of musical collaboration."
Linh blushed and did not answer immediately, making Bảo Châu laugh out loud.
"The answer is clear as day," Châu said, patting his friend on the shoulder. "You know, since the day I met Nhật Minh, you've smiled a lot more. Before, you were always like a machine programmed to get high scores and win prizes. Now, sometimes I see you absent-mindedly smiling to yourself while looking at your phone. That's the most obvious sign."
"I don't know," Linh admitted, her voice quiet. "Everything is confusing. We just reconciled after an argument, the finals are coming up, we still have to worry about Kiên, about my dad if he knows what I'm doing..."
"Don't let all those worries make you forget your true feelings," Bảo Châu said, his voice becoming serious and warm. "Linh, you've spent your whole life doing what others expect of you. Studying well because your parents want you to. Playing the violin perfectly because that's the standard you set for yourself. But feelings, emotions, those are the only things that belong to you, no one has the right to decide for you. If you really like him, don't be afraid to admit it, even if just to yourself first."
Linh looked at you, her heart filled with gratitude. "Thank you Châu. I don't know what I would do without you."
"It will probably be much drier and more rigid," Bảo Châu teased, making them both laugh.

That afternoon, when Linh told Minh that she had revealed the secret to Bảo Châu, he was a little worried at first, but quickly calmed down when he saw the sincerity in her explanation.
"I believe you made the right decision," Minh said after hearing the story. "Bảo Châu is a good person, and he deserves to know the truth, especially when he worried about you so much."
"Aren't you angry that I revealed your secret?" Linh asked, still a little guilty.
"No," Minh shook his head, smiling. "The more people who are actually on our side, the better for both of us. I've learned that, thanks to you."
Linh smiled, feeling much more relieved. With Bảo Châu on her side, she feels much stronger to face the challenges that lie ahead — especially the approaching finals, and other secrets still waiting to be revealed.

The opportunity for Bảo Châu to prove his promise came earlier than expected. That weekend, Mr. Phương Đình Đạt suddenly changed his work schedule, deciding to stay home instead of going to the province as originally planned. On the evening Linh had scheduled a practice session with Minh to complete the final details before sending the mix to Mr. Hoàng for comments.
"Where are you going tonight?" Mr. Đạt asked when he saw Linh preparing to leave the house with the violin case, his voice somewhat questioning.
Before Linh could think of a reasonable answer, her phone vibrated. Bảo Châu, as if he had predicted this situation, made a video call right at that moment.
"Linh, do you remember we met at my house tonight to do a group Literature presentation?" Bảo Châu spoke on the phone, her voice natural as if she had rehearsed it, even though she was actually just improvising on the spot after receiving Linh's urgent text message a few minutes earlier. "My mother makes delicious green bean sweet soup. Please bring your violin along to perform for my whole family to see later. Everyone looks forward to hearing you play," Linh quickly responded. "Oh right, I forgot. I'm going to Bảo Châu's house to do group homework. I might be a little late." Mr. Đạt looked at his daughter, his eyes still a little doubtful, but in the end he nodded. "Okay, but remember to come home before ten o'clock. Lately I've noticed you often come home late."
"Yes," Linh replied, breathing a sigh of relief when her father returned to the house.
When she got to the gate, she called Bảo Châu back, her voice full of gratitude. "Thank you so much, Châu. You saved me a loss."
"If you promise, you have to keep it," Bảo Châu smiled over the phone. "But next time, remember to let me know sooner, I almost didn't have time to think of a reasonable reason. Besides, if your father asks for more details about this 'group homework' session, remember to say that you're giving a presentation on The Tale of Kieu. I just finished studying that chapter so you should explain it accordingly."
"You think so thoughtfully," Linh smiled, touched by her best friend's sophistication.
"Go practice, don't make Nhật Minh wait too long," Bảo Châu urged, then added one more sentence before hanging up. "And remember to tell me about the progress of the 'secret song' he's writing for you, I'm very curious."
Linh blushed, she didn't expect that she had accidentally told that story to her best friend just now. She quickly turned off the phone and walked quickly towards warehouse number 4, feeling relieved thanks to having a trustworthy ally like Bảo Châu, ready to help whenever she needed it, without calculation or condition.
When she recounted the situation that had just happened to Minh, he burst out laughing, something that rarely happened when talking about such tense things. "Bảo Châu is such a great friend. He reacted faster than I thought."
"That's right," Linh nodded, sat down in her familiar chair, and placed the violin case on the table. "With him on my side, I feel much stronger. It feels like the burden of the secret no longer weighs me alone."
"So," Minh said, opening his laptop, his eyes becoming serious but warm, "we have one more reason to complete this remix well. Not only for the scholarship, not only for ourselves, but also for all the people who have silently believed and supported us on this journey — your mother, Bảo Châu, and perhaps, one day, my family too." Linh nodded, clearly feeling the meaningful weight of that statement. She picked up her violin, ready to begin tonight's practice session with a new determination, steadier than ever, nourished by the sincere friendship and unconditional trust of those around her.
