Chapter 9: Chapter 9 Qualifying round — Rebellious Symphony

Updated 09/09/2026 7 min read

The day to submit the demo has finally arrived.

Linh stood in front of Mr. Hoàng's office, clutching the USB containing the final recording that she and Minh spent all week perfecting. This was the first time after three years of studying that she felt her hands tremble before submitting an assignment — not because she was afraid of a bad grade, but because she was truly afraid that the passion of both of them would not be understood by anyone other than themselves.

"Come in," Mr. Hoàng called when he saw her standing outside the door and not entering.

Linh took a deep breath, walked into the room, put the USB on the table. "Teacher, this is the demo I would like to submit."

Teacher Hoàng plugged the USB into the laptop, put on headphones, and motioned for her to sit in the chair opposite. "Sit down, let me listen."

Three minutes and forty seconds passed slowly like hours for Linh. She sat there, her hands clasped together, observing every fleeting expression on Mr. Hoàng's face — a frown at the beginning, a slight nod in the middle, and finally, when the music ended, he took off his headphones and sat silently for a long time.

"Who can help me mix this song?" he finally asked, his tone distinctly serious.

Linh hesitated. This was the question she feared the most, because the promise to keep Z's identity a secret was still intact. "A classmate helped me, teacher. She has a talent for electronic music."

"What's her name?"

"I'm sorry not to say your name," Linh replied, trying to keep her voice calm. "She doesn't want to reveal her identity for personal reasons."

Teacher Hoàng looked at her for a long time, his eyes searching but not pressing further. "Okay. I respect that. But I have to be honest, Linh, this is the best arrangement I've ever heard from a high school student in my twenty years of teaching."

Linh's heart jumped with joy. "Is that true, teacher?"

"Really," Mr. Hoàng nodded, his voice filled with rare approval. "You did exactly what I asked: retain the soul of Beethoven, but breathe in a completely new breath. The way you handled the climax, letting that silence linger, then exploding again with both electronic sound and acoustic violin... I have to say, it was a bold and extremely effective decision."

Linh felt a surge of happiness that she rarely allowed herself to fully feel. During all her years of studying, she was used to getting good grades, but this praise was different — it wasn't for technical precision, but for the soul she put into her work.

"But," Mr. Hoàng continued, his voice becoming more serious, "I have to warn you first. This demo is enough for you to pass the qualifying round, I'm sure of that. But the semi-finals and finals will be much tougher."

"I understand," Linh nodded.

"This year's final round," Mr. Hoàng said, opening a notice on the table, "will be held at the Royal City Theater, performed live in front of the entire jury, including a direct admission representative from the Juilliard Academy of Arts who came to Vietnam to judge this year's competition. This is not just another domestic competition, Linh. This is your only, live, opportunity to impress the very person who will decide your scholarship."

Linh swallowed. The pressure suddenly increased tenfold. "So what else do I need to prepare?"

"In the semi-finals," Mr. Hoàng explained, "you will perform live in front of a smaller panel of judges, not just submitting recordings. This will be the real test, because performing live requires a completely different type of bravery than recording in a studio that can be edited many times."

"I understand," Linh replied, her voice regaining its familiar determination.

"One more thing," Mr. Hoàng added, his voice low and meaningful. "This year's final jury is known to be very strict with works that mix genres. Many people on the board still hold a conservative view, believing that classical music and electronic music are two worlds that should not be on the same stage. You will have to prepare mentally to face harsh criticism, possibly even harsher than what the teacher once told you." Linh nodded, clearly feeling the weight of the road ahead. But she also felt a new determination, stronger than ever. "I'm ready, teacher."

Teacher Hoàng looked at her, his eyes flashing with a hint of satisfaction. "I believe in you, Linh. Both you, and the anonymous friend who helped you create this work. Tell her that I hope that one day, no matter what day it is, she will confidently step into the light with her true talent."

Linh remained silent, feeling that statement was like a distant prophecy that she didn't know would ever come true.

That evening, when Linh told Minh the news in storage room No. 4, he was silent for a moment before bursting into laughter, a rare laugh of relief.

"We passed the qualifying round," he said, his voice still filled with disbelief. "It's really been done."

"Teacher Hoàng said it was the best arrangement he had ever heard from a high school student," Linh recounted, unable to hide the pride in her voice.

"Really?" Minh raised his eyebrows, a smug smile flickering on his lips. "Of course, who said I would help arrange the music?"

"Don't be cocky," Linh gently pushed his shoulder, but the corners of her lips also curved up into a smile. "But the teacher also warned that the final round will be much more difficult. Taking place at the Royal City Theater, there will be a Juilliard representative directly judging the exam."

The smile on Minh's lips gradually receded, replaced by a thoughtful expression. "Directly from Juilliard? So the pressure this time is really no joke."

"That's right," Linh nodded, her voice becoming serious. "And the jury is said to be very conservative with genre-blending works like ours."

Minh was silent for a moment, then looked at her with steady eyes. "So we have to make the mix in the semi-finals and finals even more perfect. Not perfect in your old style," he quickly added when he saw she was about to object. "Which is perfect in the truest, most intense sense we can create." Linh nodded, feeling a new energy rising in her heart. "Then from now on, we need to practice even harder. Not only perfecting the mix, but also practicing live performance. The semi-finals do not allow editing like the recording."

"Agreed," Minh nodded and opened the calendar on his phone. "So from next week, in addition to evening work hours, we need more time on weekends to practice live performances." Linh nodded, although she was briefly worried about explaining to her parents why she was busier on the weekends. But right now, before Minh's determined eyes, all other worries seem to become much smaller.

"We will do it," she said, her voice firm, as if she were reminding herself more than talking to Minh.

"We will do it," Minh repeated, looking at her with confidence.

And in that moment, in the middle of a dusty storage room in the basement of the gymnasium, with the notice about the Royal City Theater still placed on the table, two young people looked in the same direction, sharing the same dream, no longer two opposing worlds like that fateful evening three weeks ago, but two halves of the same symphony that was gradually taking shape.

The good news of passing the qualifying round quickly spread to class 11A1 when Mr. Hoàng announced the list of candidates selected to continue in front of the whole school at flag-raising time on Monday morning. Phương Linh's name was announced first, accompanied by bustling applause from the whole school. But when the principal mentioned the phrase "creative arrangement, with modern electronic music elements", a wave of whispers spread throughout the school yard.

"The class president makes electronic music? I thought she only played classical violin?"

"Someone must have helped, but electronic music is not her forte."

Linh stood in the front row, trying to keep a calm face in the face of whispers, but inside she couldn't help but worry whether someone would be curious enough to find the identity of the person who helped her to the point of tracking down Minh.

After the flag salute, Bảo Châu ran to hug her, his face beaming. "Linh! You passed the qualifying round! I knew it right away, you can always do it!"

"Thank you, Châu," Linh smiled, touched by her best friend's sincere joy.

"Hey," Bảo Châu lowered his voice and leaned close to her ear. "That 'modern electronic element' part, is it thanks to the 'friend' you've been talking about lately?" She winked meaningfully.

Linh blushed, neither denying nor confirming, just nodded vaguely. Bảo Châu laughed, did not ask further questions, just walked hand in hand with his best friend, eyes sparkling with curiosity that was delicately restrained.

Amidst the gossip and scrutiny of the whole school, Linh suddenly realized that the road ahead was not just musical notes that needed to be perfected, but also a secret that was becoming more and more difficult to keep, amidst a group that was always curious and an identity that still needed to be protected at all costs.

That afternoon, after school, Linh texted Minh to let Minh know about the whole school's reaction. He only replied briefly: "Let them speculate. As long as no one knows exactly who I am, we're safe." But reading that text message, Linh couldn't help but feel a vague sense of insecurity, as if the real storm was still gathering on the horizon, just waiting for the right moment to strike.
