Chapter 20: Chapter 20 The WaveSound Contract — Rebellious Symphony

Updated 09/09/2026 7 min read

Neither of them expected that a secretly filmed video from the semi-final stage, posted on social networks by an anonymous audience with the caption "The best violin performance combined with electronics I've ever seen", would quickly spread in the music-loving community, reaching more than half a million views in just a few days.

In the video, although the image quality is not high because it was shot with a phone from afar, the recorded sound is quite clear, enough for electronic music connoisseurs to immediately recognize the characteristic sound mixing style - fuzzy synth layers, dramatic treatment of silence, and especially a small technical detail that only people in the profession will notice: a unique sound effect that "Z" used in a famous hit a few months ago.

Phạm Gia Huy, talent discovery manager at indie record label WaveSound Records, is one of the few observant people who noticed that coincidence. He has followed Z's career since the early days, always impressed with his unique production style, which is completely different from the crowd of mass electronic music producers on the market.

"This is definitely Z's work," he told his assistant after listening to the video dozens of times. "No one else can make this sound. But why is he behind a classical violin performance like this?"

Gia Huy decided to contact Z through the anonymous message channel that this producer still uses to communicate with fans and partners in the underground world - an email box created specifically for work purposes, unrelated to his real identity.

Minh received that email one evening, right while he and Linh were completing the final details for the final round mix.

"What is it?" Linh asked when she saw Minh suddenly silent, attentively reading the phone screen with an unbelievable expression.

"WaveSound Records," Minh said, his voice still a bit dazed, showing her the phone. "They realized I was behind your semi-final mix, through a video circulating online. Phạm Gia Huy, their talent discovery manager, wanted to meet me in person to discuss an official recording contract."

Linh read the email content, her eyes widened in surprise. "This is a big record label, right? They have promoted many famous underground artists."

"That's right," Minh nodded, his voice still mixed with emotion. "This could be the opportunity I've been dreaming of for a long time, to be officially recognized, to produce music professionally, not hiding in an abandoned storage room anymore."

Three days later, Minh arranged to meet Phạm Gia Huy at the office of WaveSound Records, in a school uniform because he had to take advantage of his lunch break, a strange contrast between the image of a seventeen-year-old student and the anonymous reputation of "Z" that Mr. Gia Huy had long admired.

"You... are you Z?" Gia Huy asked, unable to hide his surprise when he saw Minh walk in, much younger than he imagined.

"Yes, it's me," Minh replied, trying to stay confident even though he couldn't help but feel nervous.

Gia Huy invited him to sit down, poured him a glass of water, his eyes still curious. "I've been listening to your music for the past eight months. Your style is unique, completely different from the market. But I didn't expect that you were still a high school student, and I didn't expect that you were behind the violin-electronic composition that caused a stir in the recent Youth Art Creation contest."

"It's a special project," Minh explains, choosing his words carefully so as not to reveal too much about Linh. "I helped a friend complete his mix for a competition."

"Very impressive," Gia Huy nodded, then got straight to the point. "I want to invite you to sign an exclusive contract with WaveSound Records. We will invest in all facilities, professional studios, and marketing teams to make Z an official name in the music industry, not just underground."

Minh was silent, his heart beating fast at this dream opportunity. "What are the contract conditions?"

"Five-year exclusive contract," Gia Huy said, handing him a thick file of documents. "You will have to commit to producing a minimum of three albums during that time, participate in promotional performances according to the schedule arranged by the company, and most importantly, reveal your true identity to build your personal brand image. Today's audience wants to connect with the real person behind the music, not just an anonymous name."

Minh stiffened at that last clause. "Reveal your true identity? Immediately?"

"Not necessarily right away," Gia Huy explained, "but within the first six months of the contract, we need you to officially debut with your real name, real image, to build a sustainable brand story. The current music market has no room for artists who stay hidden forever, Mr. Minh."

Minh remained silent, clearly feeling the weight of this decision. This is an opportunity for him to officially pursue his musical career seriously, be recognized, and receive proper investment. But it also means that he has to face his father directly much sooner than expected, and possibly, it can lead to unpredictable consequences for Linh and the competition she is participating in.

"I need time to think," Minh said finally, his voice cautious. "This is an important decision, I cannot answer immediately."

"Of course," Gia Huy nodded, seemingly satisfied with the unexpected maturity of a young student. "I'll give you two weeks to think. But I hope you understand, this is an opportunity that doesn't come easily a second time, Minh. Many talented artists have to wait their whole lives to get an invitation like this." Minh nodded and left the WaveSound Records office with a confused mind. The dream opportunity had just appeared, but it came at the most sensitive time, when everything between him and Linh, between him and his family, was in a fragile state of balance, just waiting for a small fluctuation to completely collapse.

That night, as she recounted the entire encounter to Linh, she listened attentively, her emotions mixed between joy for Minh's opportunity and vague worry about what it might entail.

"This is a great opportunity," Linh said, trying to show sincere support. "You deserve to be recognized, Minh."

"But?" Minh asked, noticing the hesitation in her voice.

"But I'm worried," Linh admitted, "if you publicly reveal your identity right now, right before the final round, will it affect you, and even me, in ways we haven't anticipated?"

Minh grabbed her hand and squeezed it reassuringly. "I haven't decided anything yet. I have two weeks to think, and I promise, whatever decision I make, I will discuss it carefully with you first, and not hide it like before," Linh nodded, feeling somewhat reassured by that promise, but in her heart, a feeling of insecurity still smoldered, as if the real storm was still gathering in the distance, just waiting for the right moment to strike stronger than ever.

News of the invitation from WaveSound Records, although kept secret, reached Đỗ Xuân Kiên just a few days later, through the same underground connections he still maintained.

"I heard you're about to sign an exclusive contract with WaveSound?" Kiên texted and asked directly, no longer in a threatening tone like before, but mixed with a bit of obvious jealousy. "It's not fair. Me and the group struggled for years in third-tier clubs, and you, less than a year after leaving the group, are already being scouted by a major label."

Minh read the message, carefully considering each word before responding. "I haven't decided anything yet. And if I sign that contract, I will still keep my commitment to helping Neon Tide as I promised."

"I hope so," Kiên replied, his voice still a bit bitter but much less harsh than the previous threatening messages. "Anyway, congratulations. Maybe, one of us will finally achieve something great from this path."

Minh put away his phone, his heart heavy with thoughts. He realized that, although the threat from Kiên had cooled down somewhat after the commitment they signed, a new, more complicated pressure was gradually forming from the very opportunity he had always dreamed of.

That night, Minh sat alone in his room for a long time, pondering the pros and cons. If he signs the contract, he will have to reveal his identity within six months - right when Linh needs the most stability to prepare his study abroad documents, right when the relationship between his father and him is still hanging like a time bomb. But if he refuses, will he personally close the only door to prove to his father, and to the whole world, that the musical path he has chosen is not a meaningless childish game?

He reopened the final mix for the final round, listening again piece by piece, trying to find peace in the music he and Linh created together. But this time, even music was not enough to completely soothe the worries rolling in his heart, about a future that he knew, no matter which path he chose, would no longer be as simple as before.
