Chapter 23
Chapter 23: Chapter 23 Stepping Away to Protect Each Other — Rebellious Symphony
Over the following days, the situation became increasingly worse.
Rumors about Z's identity, now almost confirmed, spread beyond the school to a few small entertainment news sites specializing in school scandals. A shocking article appeared: "Shock: Famous underground producer Z is actually a special student, using a hidden identity to help his girlfriend cheat on exams?"
The article, even without authentic evidence, was enough to create a wave of negative public opinion, especially the phrase "exam cheating" was repeated many times on social network comments, aimed directly at Linh without specifically naming her.
The organizing committee of the National Youth Art Creativity Contest, in response to public pressure, sent an official notice to Mr. Hoàng, requesting the school to clearly verify the "external support" in the process of preparing Linh's entry, if she did not want to face the risk of being eliminated from the final round because of suspicion of not complying with the contest regulations.
Teacher Hoàng called Linh into the office with a rare serious look on his face. "Linh, I need you to tell me the truth. Did the friend who helped you arrange the music, who the whole school is speculating is Z, really only provide technical support, or did he directly compose part of the entry for you?"
"Teacher," Linh replied, her voice trembling but determined, "she helps me arrange and process electronic sounds, like a professional music producer would do with any artist. But the entire violin performance, the emotions, the way of interpreting the music, are completely mine." Teacher Hoàng nodded, seeming to believe that explanation, but still could not hide his concern. "I believe in you, Linh. But I need you to prepare mentally, maybe the organizers will ask for an official explanation before allowing you to continue competing in the final round."
Linh left Mr. Hoàng's room with a heavy heart, realizing that the consequences of the storm of public opinion were much more widespread than she imagined.

That night, when Linh told Minh the whole situation, he sat silently for a long time, his face dark with guilt.
“This is all my fault,” he said, his voice choking. "If I hadn't been involved in your competition from the beginning, you wouldn't have had to face the risk of being eliminated because of these baseless rumors."
"Don't say that," Linh protested immediately, but in her voice, Minh still recognized a bit of confusion that she tried to hide.
That night, after sending Linh home, Minh sat alone for a long time in warehouse number 4, facing the most difficult decision of his life. He thought about his father's ultimatum, about the risk of Linh being eliminated from the competition because of the scandal involving him, and about the looming opportunity from WaveSound Records.
In the end, he made a decision that he believed was the right one, even though it would cost him a painful price.

The next morning, Minh texted Linh, his tone different from usual: "We need to talk. Meet me in storage room number 4 after class."
When Linh arrived, she immediately noticed his unusually serious expression, and a bad premonition rose in her heart.
"What's up?" she asked, her voice already shaking with worry.
"I thought carefully all night," Minh said, his voice trying to stay calm but unable to hide the pain behind it. "I think it's best if I completely withdraw from helping you prepare for the finals."
Linh was stunned. "What are you talking about?"
"If I continue to appear by your side, even just behind the scenes, the rumors will become more intense, and the risk of you being eliminated from the competition will be higher," Minh explained, his voice heavy. "The organizers have begun an investigation. If I publicly withdraw now, declaring that you complete the rest of the mix yourself, perhaps the scandal will subside, and you will still have a chance to compete fairly."
"No," Linh shook her head, her voice starting to shake with panic. "We've built this mix together from the ground up. I can't, and don't want to, pretend you don't exist on this journey."
"This isn't about whether you want it or not," Minh said, his voice choked with pent-up emotion. "This is about protecting your future, Linh. I can't let my scandal ruin the chance of a lifetime you've been working for so many years."
"What about your contract?" Linh asked, tears began to rise. "What about WaveSound Records? What about your father?"
Minh was silent for a long time, then replied, his voice exhausted from the internal struggle all night. "I have decided to refuse the contract with WaveSound, at least for now. And I will accept my father's conditions, temporarily putting aside music to focus on studying, so as not to make things more confusing."
"Are you giving up everything?" Linh asked, her voice cracking with pain. "And the music, and your opportunity, and... us?"
Minh looked at her, his eyes filled with pain that he tried to suppress. "I think, for now, maybe we should keep our distance. Not because I no longer love you, but because I love you too much to continue dragging you into the chaos I caused."
"That's not protecting me," Linh said, tears rolling down her cheeks, her voice shaking with hurt. "That's giving up, Minh. You're repeating the same way you left Neon Tide, making your own decisions for everyone without consulting them."
"This time is different," Minh argued, his voice also starting to tremble. "This time, I'm trying to protect what's most important, even if it means sacrificing my own happiness."
"There's no such thing as protection when you make your own decisions for me!" Linh shouted, unable to contain her emotional outburst. "I told you, I'm not a glass doll that needs to be protected from all risks. I have the right to decide for myself whether I'm willing to take risks for you or not!"
"But this time, the risk isn't just yours," Minh replied, his voice cracking. "It's the scholarship, it's the future, it's the dream you've been pursuing your whole life. I can't let myself be the reason you lose all of that."
Linh stood there, tears falling non-stop, feeling like the whole world had just collapsed under her feet. "So you've made your decision. No need to ask me."
"Linh, I—"
"That's enough," Linh interrupted, her voice shaking but decisive, turning and walking out of the warehouse, not daring to look back for fear that her tears would make her collapse on the spot.
Minh stood there, watching her figure disappear behind the door, feeling like he had just personally pushed away the most important person in his life, all because of a decision that he believed was the right one, but was more painful than anything he had ever experienced.
Storage room number 4, which had witnessed so many sweet moments and even their quarrels, was now immersed in a cold silence, as if it too was mourning the beautiful chapter that had just ended so painfully.
Minh sat down in his chair, his head resting on the table, his hands still shaking after the recent argument. He reopened Phạm Gia Huy's email and typed a short response: "I would like to decline this contract invitation. Thank you for your trust." His finger paused for a long moment on the send button, as if considering it one last time, before finally pressing it down, closing the door of the opportunity he had dreamed of for so many years.
Next, he texted his father: "I agree with your conditions. I will focus on studying, not pursuing music anymore." He sent it, then turned off the phone screen, not wanting to see any responses right now.
He looked around the familiar storage room - the set of machines, the Launchpad with its square keys that once flickered with life, Linh's mother's old piano still left there from the previous practice session. Everything now seemed to be mocking him, reminding him of what he had just decided to give up.
He pulled out his phone again, opened the song he wrote for Linh, and listened to it from beginning to end with silent tears. That was probably the last time he allowed himself to be so weak, before having to rebuild a tough shell to face the difficult days ahead, when he had to learn to live without music, and worst of all, without Linh by his side.
Outside, the late afternoon rain began to fall, tapping sadly on the old corrugated iron roof of the storage room, like a sad song without words for the separation that had just happened between two people who had once created the most brilliant symphony of youth together.
He sat there until it was completely dark, not bothering to turn on the light, just letting the light of the laptop screen illuminate a small corner in the darkness, exactly like how everything between him and Linh had begun, and now, it seemed to end in this very small room.
